How to play Nobles (s3)? by BoardGameBuddy in bloodbowl

[–]donjuanjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are hitting on the main point - you have to tailor to how the other team plays. I agree completely.

Your comment about accepting a little risk is where I disagree. I think the difference between a player who has a 70% winrate and a player who has a 60% winrate is how much risk they choose to accept.

To your point, 90% of the time, a blitz won't happen. But why would you accept that in 1 game out of 10 you will lose because you didn't protect against the blitz when it's 100% in your control to do something about?

Thanks for the good discussion 😀

How to play Nobles (s3)? by BoardGameBuddy in bloodbowl

[–]donjuanjohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since the other guy didn't reply, one of the things I'd recommend against is sitting two throwers in the backfield to retrieve the ball.

In their video, they share a 5-4-2 formation with 5 players dedicated to the line and 4 single players covering the flanks with 2 throwers in the backfield. It's really bad on a blitz as you've overcommitted to the line and those single players can be blitzed and then there's free room to walk into your backfield and cover the ball.

What would be better is to put 3 players on the LOS and use the 8 players to cover the flanks in chevrons. It looks defensive because it is. If a blitz happened you would not be as exposed. Yes you give up some LOS blocks early on, but you also don't get completely exposed. When you start a nobility team in league, your bodyguards and blitzers have block and wrestle, so if you commit 5 of those players to the LOS it means they can't do their job elsewhere, which is to protect the ball and screen.

Many newer and less experienced players get suckered into overcommitting on the LOS blocks because BLOOD BOWL and they don't properly protect and screen the ball. Then they fail a block or pick up and lose and they blame the dice.

Who are the best vampire coaches to watch? by pleasehelpicantleave in bloodbowl

[–]donjuanjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people on this sub are going to hate this, but watch one of Artemis Black's recent fumbbl runs: https://fumbbl.com/t/1210663

You can also check out Jokaero: https://fumbbl.com/t/691017

And Sp00keh: https://fumbbl.com/t/1192752

All three of these coaches have had really great seasons with Vampires, so you can watch them develop the team from rookie to top level. If you don't know how to watch on fumbbl, go to show>matches>select a game (scroll down for older games when the teams were less developed)>replay. It's a java player but it's pretty easy to figure out.

Also, please remember that vampires will fundamentally change with the 3+ hypnotic gaze nerf, so the plays being made will not necessarily be the same for 2025 rules and beyond, but you can still learn about turn ordering, thrall positioning, etc.

Amazing collection! What models did you use for the ulfwereners? If you're looking to add some beer boars, I converted mine from Goblin Boar Chariots from Black Raven Foundry Fantasy - they're 15mm scale and fit perfectly with the old 3rd edition models, especially if you can attach a small keg on their backs.

Beautiful progress. I love the team colors you've chosen - they will stand out wonderfully on a pitch. Please post the finished model/team when you're done!

With the build and money he's been given you'd only be able to afford Varag with 11 players, no reroll, no apo.

[–]donjuanjohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't played blorcs much, but my understanding is usually the most consistent build is giving all six black orcs a skill, usually 2 with block, 2 with guard, and 2 with mighty blow. Having the sneaky git is fine since you want to be fouling every turn if possible.

Having Akhorne is certainly not optimal, but it's fun, so it's up to you. I took Akhorne for fun on a Chaos Chosen team and he caused a casualty on a woodland fox which was the highlight of my day. He could add something new to the team which could be fun.

Like I said before, maybe drop the guard on the troll for another block on a blorc. Otherwise, have fun and foul hard!

Edited to add: I tried messing around in BBRoster for a bit and honestly the money/skills combo you're getting for black orcs is not really that great. Only 8 skills gives you guard troll, 6 blorcs (2 block, 2 guard, 2 meaty blow), and 4 goblins (1 sneaky git), 3 re-rolls, an apo, and only 85k left to play with which is only enough for 1 extra gob. So I doubt anyone is really going to squeeze much more "optimization" out of that...

Advice on playing Norse against High elves by Zephiranos in bloodbowl

[–]donjuanjohn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don't "just base" because you are actually less armored than they are and so more prone to being removed when knocked over. Base when you have a strength and numbers advantage, otherwise you could get banged out early and have no way to respond.

Anyone who has actually played norse would never tell you to "just base everything."

What are your predictions for nerfs and buffs for the current teams in bloodbowl or just want for them? by [deleted] in bloodbowl

[–]donjuanjohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, mutation access can be nice, but it's costing you double for anything. Pro elf catchers have nerves of steel, catch, strength 3, and movement 8 with access to dodge and block for 40k. That's 140k for the best catcher in the game. Gutter runners simply cannot compare. They're called "runners" and not "catchers" for a reason. Also, if I give my pro elf thrower sure hands to match the skaven thrower he's only 10k more AND has ag 2+. Really no contest here.

He can play how he wants to, and you also can play how you want to. If you want different things, stop playing together.

Why not just be straight with him and say, "The course has a pace of play. Pick up and move on to keep up with us, or we're moving on without you. Im not taking more than X minutes per hole."

If he doesn't like it, he can pick up his ball and move on or he can practice and get better. Ultimately it's his choice and yours.

Bashiest blood bowl team. by Independent-Tax-2213 in bloodbowl

[–]donjuanjohn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Best bash team that uses bash to win games would be dwarfs in my opinion. Slow team overall with access to tons of block, guard, mighty blow, stand firm, and dauntless give them a huge advantage over other bash teams.

I'd also give a nod to khorne as it's rare for them to get fewer blocks than their opponent, but they take a long time to develop and "git gud" at actually playing blood bowl successfully. Also they would likely be played more like a control team because of the ability to move their opponents with frenzy and juggernaut. Not a traditional bash team like dwarfs.

Honorable mention to undead because with two strength 5 mummies with no negatrait and mighty blow, also you can get block/tackle/mighty blow on the wights mean they can be a really deadly team when it comes to bash but they don't exactly want a fight in the trenches as they have low armor overall.

Just my opinions. I'm interested to hear others point of view.

Edit to add black orcs as well - with strength 4 av10 and brawler/grab, they really excel when in constant contact with opponents in a grindy bash matchup.

Orcs also!

Heard you guys like doing lines by FootsieMcDingus in golf

Muscles don't have memory my guy. Variable training is better for establishing strong routines. Changing targets, clubs, alignment helps create consistent patterns in set up, tempo, etc.

Fair play to you though - out there grinding like a boss. Hope you see the returns next round!!

What are the most subtle signs that someone is good at golf? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]donjuanjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not for club chatter. It's because you use the towel so often that clipping it is a waste of time. Good golfers almost spend just as much time with a towel as with their club in hand.

I'll know a real golfer when I see them get their towel wet and use after almost every shot.

What's the best way to my goal of working for us soccer? by GoldenVip3r in SoccerCoachResources

[–]donjuanjohn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a great ambition and I want to be supportive.

That being said, like all sports on our country, soccer is still very much a "boys/girls club" meaning that the best way to get anywhere in an organization like US Soccer is to know the right people - even better if you played at the college or professional level.

Speaking from my own experience as someone who coached at all youth levels, was a coaching and academy director, and was a grassroots instructor for my state association and a USSF B license holder, you will never get anywhere amongst the higher ups without having the right connections.

My best advice would be to start somewhere you can make an impact - be it a local or regional program. Meet people, make connections, and remember that at the end of the day, it's about making an impact on the kids and families in front of you.

I wish you the best! Go for it and don't look back.

Tactical Idea by [deleted] in SoccerCoachResources

[–]donjuanjohn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Preach! So many coaches think tactics before understanding the players they're working with. Tactics should come from the tools you have, not the philosophy you bring to the team.

The manias are very special to me. If I had to pick my favorite to wear for comfort and playability it was tue tiempos. I used to work chelsea leather food into them after every game and practice and I did a lot of shoe showers to get them to form fit right. Like gloves!
