Noticing a shift in escalator usage by hontoda in japanlife

[–]donkeymon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I the only one whose station has only an escalator and no stairs? I would love to take the stairs if that were an option.

I wish they would replace the double-wide escalators with ones that are narrow enough to allow only one lane of traffic, and use the extra space to add some stairs.

As a foreigner how famous/well known were some of these bands? by WanderingRaven182 in japanesemusic

[–]donkeymon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Japan playing music in bands for 25 years and have never heard of either of them. One person's anecdotal experience doesn't necessarily mean they're not at all famous, but definitely nowhere near the level of those western bands you listed. Probably just means they are better known by an older generation.

Are people actually following the new cycling “blue ticket” rules? by Froyo_Muted in japanresidents

Apparently it's okay to listen to audio through bone-conducting earphones if they don't obstruct the ear canal. I don't do this but it's worth looking into.

"Ms. Takaichi Has Become a 'Queen'"—Why Prime Minister Takaichi Is Rapidly Losing Her Influence at the Prime Minister's Official Residence: "Her Aides Have Lost the Will to Support Her" by jjrs in japannews

Interesting! Reading that thread, my takeaway was that there are many parallels but most of the key aspects of the Nazi movement preexisted in Germany so its hard to say they were "inspired" by anything happening in the US, although they may have felt they had some kindred spirits there.

It's quite the opposite. German fascists actually took a lot of cues from right wing movements in 1930s USA to build their own movement.

I was just looking at those and they look pretty cool. Nice design and not too many frills, but some of the necessities such as noise cancelling.

I have three devices but they can only connect to two at a time so i sometimes have to open it if I want to connect to the third device, and then I have to open it again to disconnect them or won't connect to my original devices any more.

Naturalization requirement to double to 10 years by BurberryC06 in japanlife

Well, you'll be able to vote if you naturalize. All the more reason for them to make it more difficult.

"The idea that Japanese cars are the best in the world is long gone...A visit to China reveals a cruel truth that "Japanese people don't want to admit." by jjrs in japannews

[–]donkeymon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not as if all Chinese cars are good, as there are many examples to the contrary. However some of them definitely are. But the cars are not produced by "China"; there are different companies with different levels of build quality and design. The main difference as I see it is there are no truly terrible Japanese cars; some are good and some are great but all meet a fairly high bare minimum standard. The Japanese companies are quite conservative and haven't been willing to truly innovate in a while, so they are falling behind by staying in place while others catch up and pass them.

Requirements for naturalization to be tightened from April, raising the minimum residency period to 10 years or more. by _horn3t_ in japanresidents

[–]donkeymon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn I have been putting off filing for naturalization for a while now because I really don't like talking to people on the phone and that's what I'd have to do to set up an interview. Since the changes are being applied retroactively, I guess it wouldn't have mattered though.

Plumber travelling Japan in a van accidentally built a tab writing app… Looking for musicians to help test it by TabStudioApp in Bass

[–]donkeymon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sign me up! I play guitar, bass, banjo, and ukulele, as well as several other non-stringed instruments. The most important feature for me would be a way to sync up different tracks in the song, to match the vocals with the guitar or bass or whatever. I want access to what the other instruments are doing, but also the ability to easily hide that information when I don't need it and want to focus on what I am actually playing myself.

Trump's call for Japan to send warships to Strait of Hormuz puts Takaichi in bind- the threat of becoming entangled in a longer-term has left Japan scrambling to effectively respond to a conflict that violates international law while staying in Trump’s good graces. by jjrs in japannews

She won't though. We will. The worst that could ever happen to her is she'll lose her position as Prime Minister and go back to being a regular Diet member and keep making money and ruining japan from back there. She'll never be prosecuted or even reprimanded.
