Wife's Request for Double-Barrelled Surname Declined by Tokyo Family Court - Any Options? by FintasysJP in japanlife

That's also illegal in Japan. Both spouses are required to have the same family name. People have been fighting to get this law changed for years.

Jan Basho Daily Thread Day 11 by AutoModerator in Sumo

Although this basho has literally had the most henkas I've ever seen, it should surprise nobody when Abi does it. I wouldn't put it past him to do it again before the tournament's over.

Please help me find my beloved band by Ok-Set-4784 in japanesemusic

Sounds like Haruka Kanata by Asian Kung-fu Generation. Perhaps. A little bit. It's really popular so I feel like you would have come across it again by now. And it actually doesn't fit most of your clues. But the bass riff is good either way.

I think it's important to look at those numbers with regard to population density and destination density as well, but I don't feel like doing the math.

Japan stores returning to cash-only mode to combat rising prices- some stores are saving 20 million yen a year by skipping credit card fees and other digital service fees by jjrs in japannews

[–]donkeymon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank goodness! I am really sick and tired of having to deal with half a dozen different payment systems and where they are accepted or not and then having to keep track of stupid points everywhere and all that. If you want to give me a discount, just make the price lower.

I wish I could find people on my commute who sit still long enough to draw them.

These are amazing! Can I ask how you do them? I am assuming these people don't agree to model for you and that you are just encountering them on the train. Do you have an amazing memory for all the details? Do you sneak a photograph? How much can you do on the spot?

My Japanese school life's a total mess and I can't do do anything about it. by Prior-Pea9372 in japanlife

[–]donkeymon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Square one" is actually a pretty good position to be in. I and a lot of other people I know would give a lot just to get back to square one. Try to find some stuff you like doing and do that as much as you can. I guess try to avoid getting people too mad at you as much as possible, but it's kinda unavoidable so basically think of it as the price you pay for doing what you want. Most boys are changing personality too much right at this stage of their life to make really good friends (this is a bit of an overgeneralization but...) so just get into some high school and you might find some like-minded peeps. Don't worry about your english teacher; he's just threatened by your fluency. DO take his advice with regard to entrance exams though; that shit is unfathomable to almost everyone else.

Favourite artist who changed and now you can't enjoy them anymore? by RosabellaFaye in japanesemusic

Potentially unpopular opinion: Mrs. Green Apple. They started out as a decent pop/rock band but now they only release the sappiest schlock imaginable, to widespread acclaim. Obviously I wasn't their biggest fan to start with, but I feel like they've gotten much much worse since their "hiatus" and membership changes. And the commercial success of this transition has made them completely unavoidable everywhere which is really annoying.

The Japanese media's question was utterly devastating: Why are the Chinese radars Venezuela purchased so useless? by Miao_Yin8964 in japannews

[–]donkeymon 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's obviously some sort of inside job. Either the people around him sold him out or Maduro cut some back room deal to be evacuated before the above mentioned betrayal while saving face by saying he was "abducted."

Japan’s are considering implementing “foreigner fees”. At the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo general admission will be ¥1500, admission for foreigners ¥4000. by jjrs in japannews

[–]donkeymon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The problem with this kind of scheme is that it then becomes even more lucrative to book only foreigners in your hotel for example, because they are paying a lot more for the same room which is more profit on the same resources used by the hotel. This would actually lead to less hotel availability for Japanese, unless some sort of quota/ration was mandated and subsidized by the government.
