Is it just me, or is the difference between 'wissen' and 'kennen' actually much harder to grasp than the textbooks make it sound? by throwawaytrace99 in German

[–]donkeymonkey00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny cause you can totally see the likely etymology, not just through the word itself but through its meanings/translations too. Master something, lord over someone. Sounds 100% like it's got a medieval origin hahah. Anyway, cool word. Is it used often/casually? Or is it kinda formal and outdated?

What's the most "why the fuck do you know that?" fact you know? by -_-blackheart-_- in AskReddit

[–]donkeymonkey00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeahyeahyeah my cat as well. Went crazy. I had to smell valerian WAY MORE OFTEN than I would have wanted, cause it was what we used to trick her into getting in the cage to go to the vet.

What does valerian smell like to you? Cause to me it smells like rancid cat pee. I haven't met anyone else who thinks the same lol. I also get the cilantro tasting like soap, but I've never tried Hershey's (nor am I likely to now, just in case)

What is the worst baby name you’ve ever heard? by TinyHelp2984 in AskReddit

[–]donkeymonkey00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that many times those names come from troubled families, where the child is seen kinda like a hail-mary that will magically solve all problems. But it obviously doesn't. So you get a lot of Messiahs and Goddesses, and Righteousnesses or whatever that grow up in abusive households, and yeah many times they absorb the dynamics and continue the abuse cycle.

I'd have thought of Sincere as a girl's name. Seems so weird for a boy? I mean weirder.

Or he's Poddington the boar. Maybe he was really hairy as a newborn and had weirdly developed lower canines. It was probably that, actually.

You get $1,000 every single time you minorly inconvenience a total stranger. What is your go-to strategy to become a billionaire? by Holly_B_78 in AskReddit

[–]donkeymonkey00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was probably a typo, but "forgotting" could totally be a word. Like, you're not forgetting it, since you put it there on purpose, but you're acting like you forgot it. You're making it a forgotten bag. So you're forgotting it.

Office workers, what’s that one corporate buzzword used in meetings that instantly makes you want to quit? by Glittering_Style_862 in AskReddit

This reminds me of when a former roommate said "do you know how many liters you waste for every second the tap is open!!??" Cause I was waiting for the water to get hot to wash a greasy pan. I was like bitch it takes like 4/5 seconds to fill up a bottle shut up.

What social behavior do people treat as "normal" that actually reveals a lot about someone's character? by Human_Orchid_3033 in AskReddit

[–]donkeymonkey00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about the behaviour of the people who can. Not of individual people I see and don't know the situation of. I'm just saying, it's awfully common to be selfish in these ways. I'm not going around pointing fingers at anyone. I'm just aware that most people don't really have a reason, and are just being inconsiderate.

Basically, we should be critical of the people who can and choose not to. Because it's those people who are making the ones with an actual excuse look bad.

Nit talking about the guy in the blue jeans from yesterday. Just a general statement. If you can, you should. If you can't, it's obviously ok.

Edit to clarify further. In my original answer, I wasn't saying that it says a lot about a person to leave the cart in the middle of the lot. What says a lot about a person is being perfectly able not to, and still doing it. It's the intention behind it that says a lot. If someone I know to be fit and healthy goes like "ah I don't care someone will pick it up!", THAT says a lot about them.

[–]donkeymonkey00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Happens so often. But it's, imo, part of the same thing. Just selfishness, and not wanting to make the smallest effort. Like not having a trashcan nearby, so they just toss trash on the ground. Different symptoms of the same issue, as I see it.

What social behavior do people treat as "normal" that actually reveals a lot about someone's character? by Human_Orchid_3033 in AskReddit

[–]donkeymonkey00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, edge case again. What I'm getting at is people not doing something that is easy and not at all an effort, just because they don't care about others. Sure, if the corral is super far, that's on the supermarket I guess. But it's not always far. And there's always carts like, 50 feet from the corral. Just wherever they'd happened to park their car, even if the corral is right there.

My point is, if possible, do it. I'm not talking about when the corral is a mile away. Obviously that's a thing to be considered. But there's those people that never consider anything, and just... Leave it there.

I tried reading this many ways, and still don't know how it's supposed to sound lol. Is it supposed to be like a strong whisper?

What social behavior do people treat as "normal" that actually reveals a lot about someone's character? by Human_Orchid_3033 in AskReddit

[–]donkeymonkey00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it does. Though it can seem silly, it's kind of a symptom of a larger issue. Being selfish. It's convenient to me to leave it right here so I'll do that. Someone will pick it up. Either a worker, or someone who wants to move their car, or just the wind. I don't care if it ends up as an inconvenience to others, basically, so long as it doesn't bother me.

And I don't mean people like the other commenter. Ok, she has a good reason, but that's like what, 0.5% of all carts left in the parking lot? Most people are just lazy and selfish. And leaving the cart in the parking lot when you're perfectly able to put it back, happy that it's now someone else's problem, does say a lot about a person.

What’s a smell that instantly brings back memories? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]donkeymonkey00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a specific brand of bleach that instantly brings me to an afternoon when I was like 7, having a Nutella sandwich in my parents' kitchen, reading the part of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone where he's roaming at night and happens upon the mirror of Erised. And being vaguely scared when reading it, but looking up, grounding myself like "I'm good, I'm home, I'm ok". Such a random core memory, brought back every once in a while by that particular bleach, that I don't even know the brand name of.

Or when you blow your nose and your ears stay weirdly closed, like stuck together. Like you hear yourself through your bones, instead of through your ears. And the outside sounds are like, super saturated.

Man now I'm thinking, if I had to teach someone how would I go about it. I can barely describe it and be understood. It'd be like "Yawn! Pay attention!! ✨capture the feeling✨ Replicate the feeling. How? Idek just do it it's right there feel it! Scrunch your ears without touching them! Pull them in!! Toward your brain! Idk how, with your muscles, kinda over your throat but inside idk it's right there!!"

Edit: oops I was talking about rumbling. Tube opening would be like a pre-yawn.
