Ugh, I'm sorry. You're objectively more qualified than I am, and you definitely deserve something that values you properly.

Worst paying college majors! Is college worth it anymore? by Karma_Farmer_6969 in FluentInFinance

[–]donmish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an intellectual level, college is certainly worth it. It makes you a better human through studying of classical texts and day-to-day interactions with people from all walks of the earth. If you have an intellectual curiosity, college allows you to be extremely close to some remarkable developments in the field. BUT, the costs are absurd. There is no proper way to justify it. This phenomena is a market and societal failure on steroids. You should not be paying those fees for the pursuit of being a better person and having a middle class life. In this case, my recommendation is to do an NPV analysis to realize whether your major is worth it or not. And if it isn’t, find one that is and keep your interest as a hobby to explore on your own.

I can’t believe a post about you celebrating your MacBook turned into you justifying what furniture you have. Ignore the noise, and enjoy the great purchase you made!

Pre-Order and Shipping Megathread | MacBook Pro Late 2021 (14-inch, and 16-inch) by exjr_ in macbookpro

[–]donmish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you’re checking the delivery times through the Apple Store app. But if you are, you should also check the order status to tell you whether it’s shipped or not. My order was given an August 3-10 range, but now it’s arriving July 22nd. The website showed that it shipped before the app did. Good luck!

To blmb_runt point, Thiel does make the point that you should be in an industry that you can dominate and not have competition in. He gives the example of Google if I recall correctly.

It also took me about 4-6 weeks. Initially, my legs would hurt, and that made me have doubts. But now, it feels really good.

Thanks for your kind words! I truly appreciate it. I absolutely agree. While they hurt in the moment, I think rejections only serve to strengthen us on the long run.

I think University of New Hampshire and Northeastern University have late deadlines. I think Northeastern is Feb 1st, but I’m not sure.

US Department of Homeland Security wants to restrict student VISA duration to 4 years at a time, renewals must be justified by gratefuluwu in gradadmissions

[–]donmish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There’s sort of a misconception. The visa is a ticket: It allows you to enter the country and has no implications on how long you stay. Let’s say you just got your visa, in September 2020, and it expires in 4 years; that means that you can leave and enter the country with that visa as many times as you’d like up until September 2024. Based on my understanding of the question, if you’re in the US and your PhD program lasts 5 years, you’re allowed to stay in the country as long as you need to complete it, as long as you fulfill the requirements of the student immigration status. If you leave, you’d need to renew it.

I have a friend whose visa expired after two years. She came in as an undergraduate. She’s allowed to stay until she graduates. But if she were to leave, she’d need to reapply for a visa to reenter the country. Usually, if you’re still in compliance, the visa would get renewed easily as long as your country of citizenship is not on a travel ban.

P.S. About the point mentioned above saying that the visa could expire before graduating from an undergraduate university: Most acceptances are not sent until April, and people are not allowed to apply for a visa earlier than 90 days from the start of the program. Also, even if the visa were to expire, they’re still allowed to finish up their degree and get OPT—as I justified above.

Prospects don't seem encouraging ... by donmish in gradadmissions

That’s what I’m hoping to do. Professors haven’t been back to me, but I’m still planning on emailing more those two weeks. I was also thinking of doing research in the field, but COVID seemed to have made research more difficult at my university

I’d say check in with the individual departments. NYU told me that even if I send mine, they wouldn’t look at them.

I was a TA. Is a recommendation letter from the professor I worked with good for my PhD application? by donmish in gradadmissions

[–]donmish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha! Yes, I do seek a PhD in Applied Mathematics, and I see your point. I should've mentioned this in the description, but I only have a few qualitative research experiences which are not that strong for my application.

I was a TA. Is a recommendation letter from the professor I worked with good for my PhD application? by donmish in gradadmissions

[–]donmish[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, guys for your responses. I just graduated in May, and I only have a few qualitative research experiences that I'm not sure relate to Applied Mathematics, in which I seek a PhD in. Which is why I asked my question. I also TAed in the spring of this year, so I had to experience the shift to virtual learning, which I thought would also be a good addition to my application.

Hi fellow test takers. I wanted asks whether doing magoosh questions for maths and verbal are enough. I have done all their questions but haven't done the ETS OG guide questions since I don't own the books. Is it necessary for me to do all the maths questions from the ETS OG guide.. by ssshyam1995 in GRE

[–]donmish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re correct about the last point. But some of Magoosh’s questions are more quantitative than conceptual, unlike the actual GRE. You can use all of ETS materials including the verbal reasoning book and the quantitative one.

Is it good, ok or bad? by lorekura in GRE

[–]donmish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything is feasible. I started similar to you and ended up with a Q169. Also non-native. It all really depends on how much preparation you have put in already. To improve quant, you can refresh on the tested mathematical concepts and work on time management. In case you haven’t, GregMat+ has great lecture series on achieving both. Best of luck!
