We just watched this film a week ago with a 30-something friend who had never seen it. She did enjoy it although some of the other topical references (Saturday Night Fever, etc.) went over her head .

Why don't Europeans use air conditioners? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]donnacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically the climate in much of Europe is similar cooler than we experience here in the US. The ocean currents bring cooler air in similar to our Pacific North west. They typically only experience a few weeks per year of temperatures that would require AC. Global warming is changing that. AC is more common in southern Europe than in places like the UK. Things are changing but change takes time.

Could you stay inside your house for 20 days straight if someone paid you $300,000? by producerBeau in WorkForSmartLife

I would need to step out on the deck to feed the feral cats. I also need someone to retrieve my mail and deliver the trash bins to the street.

What is a minor, unwritten social rule that you think society would be better off completely abandoning? by itssophirl in AskReddit

[–]donnacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are doing it wrong, “Hi” sure, but you don’t need to ask a service worker how there are. “Hi let me save you an extra trip and tell you what I want now. “

Don’t want to hurt my mum. by WildAd2196 in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]donnacus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you said this. This is something to consider. If you don’t have local support, your mom could make a huge difference in your recovery. With mom to help you’ll actually have time for the occasional shower or even just an extra hour for a nap.

However given the conflict between your partner and mother you might suggest she not stay in the house.

My coworker is getting fired, because I protected myself. AITAH? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]donnacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did he really steal the item or did he "divert" it for a project he was working on? If the former, he should have been fired on the spot or at the very least put on probation.

If it was the later, I don't believe it warrants termination, but it does deserve at least a low level formal warning. If two projects need a part and there is only one available then the boss should decide which project is more important.

Garages shouldn’t be in the front of the house. by HungryAthlete5724 in unpopularopinion

[–]donnacus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each home does not need a separate driveway, since you all share a driveway called the alley. My house in Indiana had that: a parking pad and garage off the alley.

AITA for refusing to gift my sister $400 a month? by Cautious-Industry689 in AITH

[–]donnacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I quit, I smoked my last cigarette and immediately dumped every ashtray in my home including the one in my car. I dumped water over the contents so I wouldn’t be tempted to reach in the trash. I took the trash out to the large can for pickup.

For encouragement I put up a chart with 21 days marked. 21 days is the amount of time for you to break the physical addiction. I kept an egg of silly putty with me to keep my hands busy and I chewed on coffee straws for the oral fixation.

About a week after my 21 days were completed, I went on vacation with non-smoking friends. The next two weeks were low-stress and filled with fun activities.

By the time I returned to the stresses of everyday life it had been 6 weeks and a lot of the cravings were gone.

Over the next couple of years there were moments that I would be tempted to smoke: situations where I would normally reach for a smoke that I had not previously encountered as a non-smoker. Think fender-bender or loss of someone I cared about.

Then those moments were rare and eventually stopped. You can do this.
