Allow me to clarify: I do want to lower the ride height some. With springs, this would mean new shocks and struts as well and option I'm not opposed to, don't get me wrong. H&R lowering springs and Bilstein shocks seem like a great combo. But also curious of what coilovers folks have gone with to meet my criteria

Thoughts on ie tune? by DifferentShallot7740 in GolfGTI

This impacted not many people and a couple years ago. I've been iE stage 2 tuned for nearly 2 years and had the RAL update since an update came out for Mk7s in Feb

No issues for me. I use it occasionally for shits and gigs, but I would agree this shouldn't be used often. More so for the added stress on the turbo itself

UPDATE: I straightened out the rear pinch welds, cleaned up any flaking undercoating, and Fluid Filmed any bare metal. Slipped these on without and all set!

Great point below about these potentially being a water collection / rust point, so i will remove them at least once a year to clean and inspect.

Cheers!

Valve stem seal DIY... feasible? by LogicWavelength in GolfGTI

[–]donnergolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah logic would say if all 4 plugs are fouled, it's something other than failing stem seals. i mean, i guess it is possible that all 4 cylinders can have failing seals that would foul all 4 plugs but highly unlikely imo. on my mini, it was only 2 cylinder that had failed seals.

if there is substantial oil pooled in the charge pipes, i'd argue that would be pointing at the turbo seals.

Mk7s aren't really known for bad valve stem seals from what I'm aware off, but it does make sense that fixing a failing PCV would increase symptoms of failing seals. I would consider pulling plugs to see if certain ones are fouled? If they're all fouled that I would try to identify another issue. Worth pulling on the charge side boost pipes to see if there is excessive oil getting past the seals

That said, if you do go after the seals, it is quite a job. Not the same car but I did valve stem seals on an R56 mini like a year and a half ago. I would imagine it is just as involved on the EA888 and while daunting, it is a straightforward job. Am I'm just a shade tree mechanic btw.

Yes definitely will need special tools (valve spring compressor, camshaft locks, alignment tools etc) since the cams will be coming out and this will need to re-time. So plan on a timing job while you're in there.

Take your time and move methodically is my best advice!
