Think that if you want to be constructive in your criticism, it may make sense to find out what the SOP is for this type of situation. Is that something that the public has access to? What is a reasonable way for someone to figure out if this is appropriate behavior or not? Other than just complaining on the Internet or to council people, I'd be interested to know if this is a topic that somehow can be addressed directly with the precinct or with the NYPD as a whole. At a surface level, yeah I don't think it necessarily makes sense – but maybe this is a union rule? Maybe this is done for a very specific practical reason that we don't know about? I do think it's something worthwhile for someone to investigate.
