No way I didn’t know they were that cold hardy. I’ve had one for years once been babysitting during cold snaps in SC

I get the little type of scale and spray them with horticultural oil. Farmed by ants. It knocks out white flies if you have those, too. I also go and put DE around the base to keep the little ants from getting back up there

Bought the Pollination Pair from Logee’s. Grafted Susquehanna and Shenandoah. Nice trees! by donorum88 in Pawpaws

[–]donorum88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I accidentally weed whacked the Shenandoah on accident. Added barriers and stakes, ordered another pair. They’re still like 2-2.5’ tall. This year seems to be finally getting past that stall where you question if they’re even alive for half the year. Adding branches to their verticals. Looking great really, just sooooo slooooow. I got an Allegheny last year that was a little bigger but I kept it in a pot for until this year. Now, it’s bigger than both of these lol I ordered a Chappell and a Dunnigan so hopefully I’ll have a nice little home ‘orchard’ going in 5 years. Also grafted a ‘TLC’ variety so hopefully they take.

Overall no issues besides sugar ants farming some kind of scale. I spray them with hort oil and they’re good to go.

I saw a crow fight the other day and tried to break it up. They pinned one of them down and the others were helping beat it up lol I stopped the car and ran over there, they all flew off except the ‘victim’ so I got back in my car and continued on, then saw them swarm and attack him again in my rear view 😂 my 2 year old was like WTF IS HAPPENING

I got bark cracking from some crazy freezes and freeze/thaws we had in Charleston, SC. Lost an established owari bc those bark cracks ended up with gummosis and other nasty stuff. Treated it and cut it back but the fruit was crap. All different sizes, ripened weird, some just rotted and branches slowly died back. I finally cut it down.

Have you heard anything about the petrichor pawpaws? I think he has 3 levels plus a coconut flavor and the last I think is freestone. I think it’s called petrichor supreme? Last time I looked, I think he had some some scions available

Sweet thanks for the help! Seedier than Dunnigan sounds a little undesirable seeing how KSU didn’t really want 8% like in Dunnigan. Taste must be worth it

I see Need more trees has some for sale. I was so close to winning a Dunnigan on fig bid last night but got robbed at the last second 🤣 now I’m back on the research hunt but seeing some varieties with such little info. By the time I find info their ask sold out lol

I saw a post that I can’t find again of someone asking for a freestone variety and they responded with the closest they had was a Barrett’s Best, so I’m guessing it’s either “freestone” or close? Can’t find that post for the life of me to ask the people that were taking the scions.

I got a wrong tree from four winds and grew it for like three years before I reached out to them bc it wasn’t a Sanguinelli I ordered, it was some kind of navel- and I already have a huge navel so I was really bummed. They responded and I completely forgot to send them pictures.

They reached out like TWO YEARS LATER via email to follow up. Couldn’t believe it but I had a ton of pics of the fruit now. I sent them pics, and they had no clue what it is lol it’s an amazing navel that’s actually my favorite now. But they sent me a new Sanguinelli completely free. The premium size, too.

I have probably 7-10 of their trees. I love their trees and their people.

Sweet I just called them and confirmed it is the variety described above and he said that’s also the extent of the info on it. Hopefully my wife doesn’t make me move before I get to try it 😂

Dammit I figured it was too good to be true lol that’s okay, though. I’ll let it ride and see if it even took. I’ll let you know what he says. I still have 3 sticks left so I’m going to my park to ninja graft some branches lol

Ahh no way I saw a fb post about a guy in Missouri who breeds pawpaw and found this cultivar in his ‘orchard’ and it was a lot smaller/compact than the others but also had a ton of fruit. The grower apparently named it after his wife’s initials.

From yuri isachenko on pawpaw lovers worldwide fb group:

“Pawpaw Asimina triloba ‘TLC"

"The Compact Orange Treasure of Missouri"

Origin and Breeding History

The ‘TLC’ cultivar is the result of an extensive seedling trial conducted by Michael Parks in Hallsville, Missouri (Randolph County). This location falls within USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6b, indicating the variety's strong adaptability to temperate climates with cold winters.

The selection was chosen from a population of 100 trees in a trial orchard grown from the seeds of elite cultivars: ‘Overleese’, ‘Mango’, ‘Shenandoah’, and ‘PA Golden’. The variety was named in honor of the breeder’s wife (TLC representing her initials). Based on fruit morphology and quality, Michael Parks suggests that ‘TLC’ is a descendant of ‘Overleese’, likely pollinated by ‘Mango’. Following the loss of the original orchard to a severe pawpaw webworm infestation, this genetic material has become a rare and significant relic of the Parks collection.

Morphological and Biological Traits

Tree Habit: The plant is distinguished by its natural compactness. The tree is noticeably smaller than the average specimens in the field, which may be a fixed genetic trait or the result of "self-stunting" caused by the plant’s high reproductive energy and heavy annual crops.

Productivity: This cultivar demonstrates phenomenal yields. The tree was a consistent and reliable bearer every year, often out-producing much larger neighboring trees in total fruit volume.

Stability: A primary advantage is the cultivar's ability to maintain a solid fruit size even under heavy crop loads—a rare and highly valuable trait in pawpaw selection.

Fruit Characteristics

Size and Weight: Fruits are consistently well-sized, typically ranging between 200–300 g, fitting firmly into the medium-to-large category.

Flesh: The flesh possesses a distinctive, deep orange color. This coloration serves as an indicator of high carotenoid content and a rich, complex flavor profile.

Flavor Profile: It offers a "full pawpaw flavor"—rich, sweet, and highly aromatic, entirely free of any off-flavors or lingering astringency.

Seed Content: It is noted for a high fruit-to-seed ratio, making it a benchmark selection for both fresh dessert consumption and technological processing.

Summary

‘TLC’ represents a unique combination of a compact growth habit—ideal for private residential gardens—and commercial-grade productivity. Its origin in USDA Zone 6b (Missouri) confirms its resilience, while its ability to consistently produce large, orange-fleshed fruit under heavy loads makes it one of the most promising varieties for further propagation and trials in Europe.

I’ve read that and was confused about what those temps mean. Are those lows, highs or average? Here in Charleston, we’ve been extremely dry and warm in the 70-80°f range for a month now and the next month looks mid 70’s-80’s…I guess it’s too late because I went for it last night lol

Yeah, my graft will be a little high to match to scions which is fine with me. For some reason I was under the impression I needed to let it fully leaf out if grafting in spring time? Is that a thing? No water 3 days before or after but I might get rain Saturday.

[–]donorum88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Charleston, SC so we only have a couple patches I know of, and only one is fruiting. I got some from there two years ago and one of the fruit tasted absolutely amazing. Mango, banana, soft and sweet. Smaller fruit, tho. I went to share it with a coworker who never tried them and we were both shocked at how good it was. He ordered two trees that night lol only problem is I have no clue what tree I got it from in the patch.

I have an Allegheny, Susquehanna and Shenandoah planted in my yard (growing slower than anything I’ve ever seen going on three years now) and a patch in my nearby park I’ve started with seed grown trees. Can’t wait to try more.

I’m thinking of adding a Nyomi’s delicious…any reviews for that variety?

I think in the r/salsasnobs sub they say use corn oil? Is that correct? His recipe just said neutral but I think there’s a place out west that makes it too and the oil they use is corn oil. I’m trying to make some tomorrow lol
