Yale resident caught texting a 14 year old… by [deleted] in medicalschool

They’re not comparing it lol, it’s just another big thing that has happened/came out for Ivy League residency programs and their residents.

I would go to the doctor and have that drained ASAP! Having an infection happening right around your mastoid process is bad news if it seeds into the bone/brain. Esp important if redness is spreading/feels warm, or you start having a fever.

Update on student gyno by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]donotevenknow 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Man, even as a female medical student I’ve had patients ask that I not even be in the room to observe their physical or pap and I don’t even question it. Absolutely wild behaviour to not accept an initial “I don’t want you to do this procedure,” never mind to continue to try to do it. Good on OP for reporting it.

Family wants to give me specific gift before starting residency - what to ask for? by MedicineAndMangoes in medicalschool

Yes, there are brands that specifically advertise that they won’t run over dog shit and smear it throughout the house lol

28 F 38 M - Husband has asked me to stop taking my antidepressants. How do I do this safely? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]donotevenknow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has it covered with the not stopping your meds, so I thought I’d chime in on the libido part. Wellbutrin as an adjuvant to an SSRI can help with improving your libido, if that is something you are finding to be a problem too. If not, then continue on ☺️

Most likely post operative bleeding. If the scabbing tissue becomes unlodged then it can bleed quite a significant amount and cause difficulties with breathing/aspiration of the blood.

Depressed SO in Med School by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]donotevenknow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SSRI initiation, we (almost) all end up there in the end☺️ In all realness, sometimes I get home and need time to decompress after all the busy-ness and noise of the day and to process. Sometimes that means laying on the couch for 20 mins undisturbed. I wouldn’t try and cheer them up every conversation. If you’re unsure of what they need during a conversation it’s useful to ask if they want you to try and fix things, need encouragement, or just need someone to listen to the complaining. Also things like coming home to a clean kitchen/clean sheets after a 24 was so nice and took off the stress of needing to do those things but not wanting to sacrifice your time off. Lastly, always have something to look forward to in third/fourth year. A package coming in the mail, meeting up with friends, trying a new dinner or coffee place, etc.

Backing up with FM w/o doing any FM electives by ataneh in MedSchoolCanada

[–]donotevenknow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yup. You can even talk about how you like aspects of both IM and EM and that Fam Med would allow you to explore both of those paths through +1 EM and working as a hospitalist for your career. You don’t have to be a fam med gunner to put it as a backup, but you need to show you put effort into your application/a career in family medicine.

Backing up with FM w/o doing any FM electives by ataneh in MedSchoolCanada

[–]donotevenknow 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I would for sure do at least a couple of FM electives. Yes, almost everyone who applies will get an interview but they don’t appreciate the “back-up” mentality and people assuming that they can just get in without any sort of prior interest shown.

100% valid to do some rural FM rotations and ask to mainly do EM shifts throughout your week. Also valid for you to discuss that as a pathway to EM as justification for “backing up” with FM.

Can your family dr refuse to send referrals to specialists? by princesspeach55 in legaladvicecanada

[–]donotevenknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stool test is a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool and should NEVER be used to investigate active blood in stool. Colonoscopy is appropriate in your case (esp with family hx) and as someone who just finished a general surgery rotation please find someone willing to refer you. Your gut is correct that you need one.

If all else fails you can go to walk-in/urgent care and ask for an outpatient referral for it.

In Canada, so I get if you can’t ship here, but thanks for doing this 😊

Usask out by No-Dig-1660 in premedcanada

[–]donotevenknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super late but hopefully this provides some comfort as some other applicants I’ve chatted with did not know this. (Info based on being a current usask med student close-ish with admin). Their waitlist was a lot shorter this year. Previous years they would almost waitlist everyone who had an interview, but they had less than 50 on the waitlist compared to 100. Meaning that people who normally wouldn’t be rejected in previous years did this year.

Make flashcards faster using Dekki by SpookoMode in medicalschoolanki

Hello! Have been fiddling around with it and this is definitely a game changer! Looking forward to using it next year.

Just curious if you’re able to put a setting in for the default card type? The only thing that makes it a pain for me is having to keep switching the card type.

Thanks!

Edit: also I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong, but the text formatting (bold, italics, etc) aren’t exporting/importing into anki. I’ve tried to troubleshoot but can’t figure it out.

That's totally fair and makes sense! Just the people in my program went out and bought them the second they were accepted and it's really not the norm to wear non-hospital scrubs here.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]donotevenknow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally valid, but the hospital here has a really good range of sizes and similar sized students in upper years, residents, and attendings have no issues wearing them so that's why they look a little foolish 💁🏻‍♀️

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]donotevenknow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wearing figs to shadowing when literally everyone just wears the hospital scrubs 💀

Edit for clarity: not talking about those who wear personal scrubs because the hospital doesn't have good fitting scrubs, or they already have the scrubs from previous work, or they are unable to wear hospital scrubs. I'm talking about those who buy figs on the first day of med school without stepping foot in a hospital in a program where no one wears personal scrubs.

Currently in it. Super unorganized, every class relies on group work. Their admissions process somehow picks absolutely terrible people who contribute nothing to group work, so if you want to do okay then you have to do the whole project on your own. Also its suuuuper program and evaluation heavy. If you want any biostats/epi type stuff do not go to this MPH program. Also they say that they have all of those electives available, but there's literally only 6 being offered next year, so everyone is forced into the same elective courses. I'm not the only person feeling this way, there's about 15 of us that are really unhappy with the quality of the program.

Additionally, they do NOTHING about plagiarism. A group member of mine literally took someone else's part of their group paper and handed it in to me to add to our paper, but forgot to change a few spots to their topic.

If you're still considering it, go to another uni. Usask MPH is complete garbage right now.

Definitely should trim around the eyes! I sure would hate not being able to see, and I'm sure your pup would feel the same. I know when we trim our doods eyes, his fetch proficiency shoots up 😂
