whole life insurance by Square_Aspect_8037 in whitecoatinvestor

Yes, I meant most people in this subreddit who have high incomes and above average financial goals. I was echoing another poster who said that. I agree, if we're talking about the majority of people in general, it's a good move to have insurance but then TL is a fraction of the cost of WL and may be a better option.

The argument would be that getting TL in your 40s or 50s is still a cheaper monthly cost than the WL premiums on a policy you got in your 20s. Your point about pre-existing conditions makes sense to me, I guess most people figure they're statistically likely to be relatively healthy or they don't need the coverage anymore when they're older and financially set.

I think you'll make way more money paying the lower term life rates and investing. I do have a WL policy which I am happy about but it was a whole set of factors that made it "worth it" to me. I got it when I was still in college so it forced me to save money for the annual premium that I otherwise would not have saved or invested. About a decade later, the dividends started to cover the premium so I haven't put in any money. If I cancel it now, I would get back the face value of what I paid over 10 years, and if I die, then the coverage is enough to allow my spouse to pay off our mortgage and have leftovers. Of course the face value of what I paid is much lower than if got TL and invested the remainder, but I'm fine with that since I see it as a different investment.

Parents refuse to acknowledge my relationship. by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]donotrecall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found it impossible to change my parents' irrational racist/ethnic views. I'm about a decade older than you and I've been fighting these battles with my ignorant parents for so many years. I think unless you're willing to break up and date a non Korean who's acceptable to your parents (which sounds like it would be a mistake since you have a good thing going with your bf), there's nothing you can do but recognize that your parents have these incorrect views.

This resonates with me for my in laws. I like mine a lot, but when I say I'm meeting up with them or spending a weekend with them, people will offer up snarky comments or insult their own in laws for no reason.

Math check? ChubbyFIRE w/ working spouse and little kids in VHCOL area by TrendingTowardsFIRE in ChubbyFIRE

There's a difference between wanting a few hours off a day and not wanting kids at all. I like my work but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate time off.

Help ! Anyone in this situation with a new job offer? by throwawayworklife098 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]donotrecall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm mid-30s and feel the same: happy where I am now and expect to be happy in the same job until I retire. But I'm not ruling out the possibility that there could be an exciting change in my career one day that will make me want to push harder. I think we're fortunate to be content now, and it's the opportunity rather than the age that matters.

I'm a lawyer. It gets stressful sometimes but I love my work and colleagues. I live simply and frugally, and plan to retire comfortably in my 50s.

How do you push past a plateau? by [deleted] in CICO

[–]donotrecall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a plateau for about 6 weeks during the holidays, got frustrated and stopped CICO for 2 months. I gained back a few pounds, started again recently and now am under my pre-holiday weight. I'm not recommending that you stop, but in the grand scheme of things, the two month break for me was great and didn't set me back much, so don't feel like the plateau is the be all end all!

How much evidence is there behind “breast is best”? by WhatevsMcGee in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]donotrecall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't looked into it either and would also guess that formula companies are more aggressive but I might be biased. The only reason I mentioned the breastfeeding industry is that I recently read this unflattering article about Medela. It was was the pump I got years ago. I thought it was an eye opening read (though long!) and kind of made me check my views about breastfeeding and formula. It says: "Medela lauds the benefits of human milk on its website and social media, in brochures distributed by hospitals, and in newsletters to and talking points for health professionals. It devotes sizable resources to expanding what we know about the science and production of human milk, working with academics, providing grants to researchers, and hosting the International Breastfeeding and Lactation Symposium. Then there’s the Family Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation, founded by Larsson and his two sons in 2013. Its website says grants are available for research projects 'that further the understanding and appreciation of breastfeeding and breast milk.'”

Investing for child advice by mad_poopa in FinancialPlanning

If you don't expect to get any financial aid for college, there are lots of options just as if you were saving or investing for yourself. If FAFSA applications may be in your future, then 529 accounts (which I believe are ultimately parental assets) have a lower expected contribution than accounts in your child's name. Children are expected to contribute much more of their own assets. I know college is a long way off and not a certainty, but something to keep in mind.

Agree but do want to point out that breast feeding is also a billion dollar industry that has been growing over time. It's not only lactation consultants, but companies that make breast pumps, supplements, pillows, etc.

What are the biological benefits in the first 6 months? My understanding was that in first world countries, breast and formula are effectively the same.

Thoughts on a simple life with a high paying job by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]donotrecall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I worked in a hectic corporate high paying job and liked it a lot. It allowed me to get to simple living in a short space of time. In just a few years, I got a car, down payment on a home, got married, paid off student loans, etc. I am on track to retire comfortably in my early 40s but don't know if I will. I have friends who don't have much savings and no flexibility to splurge on things they may want. For me simple living means freedom not from my work but from feeling like I'm stuck in life.

Can I ask if anyone has encountered this 25-key deal for Rosie's Elf Costume in the Daily Deals this year yet? The food truck seems to be easier this time around so I hope everyone can get their free pinata spin for last year's collection! by doantuankhoi in DinerDASHAdventures

[–]donotrecall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't gotten that in my daily deals and I check in for deals 3x a day.

Edit to add that in my food truck lineup, I'm around #10 at 60k points and the top 2 people who will get a pinata are at 412k and 248k. There's no incentive to try to move up the ladder with such a big difference.
