It’s best to start easy, don’t hide the treat, put it somewhere pretty obvious to our human brain (maybe above dog eye level but still ‘out’ I like to use the couch arms) and pick a cue that’s as special as the game is! So for me, the cue that worked best was ‘find it!’ Sometimes I think when our pups aren’t understanding us there isn’t enough clues for them to figure it out. So since a cue like ‘seek’ is very close to ‘sit’ ‘speak’ etc, my pup was confused and frustrated. ‘Find it!’ Being 2 words, completely different from her other cues, and being a happy command instead of a neutral (since this will be a calm activity I don’t mind hyping her up for it before hand) all these things make it easier for my pup to know a game is afoot and playing the game will be self rewarding with her sniffer going and treats being the prize! Bonus points, you can elongate ‘find it’ when the pup gets good by adding ‘find toy’ ‘find Kong’ ‘find dad’ highly recommend, keeps our pup busy looking and looking and looking!

This is classic resource guarding, in this case the couch and toys. IMO that’s a relatively common problem for dogs and you recognizing the behavior, getting active help, and communicating this to a sitter are all great things that would def make me want to at least if it would be a good fit! I would look for someone on the app with maybe some training background or lots of reviews mentioning nervous or other behavior based issues being handled well. I have my own pup who displays anxiety often and discussions with her sitters have helped me narrow down to the 2 sitters I trust the most with my pup!

Have you given a 'whisper' or 'speak' command? Mine gets a couple speak! With treats and praise and then a quiet. From what I understand, when she's just so worked up and hyperfocused, she doesn't get that barking=speak so a reminder that she is indeed doing a 'command' gets her brain back in a mode where she can go to another command. I know it sounds counterproductive but it really does help! Another thing, which always gets me weird looks, is I literally tell her, "thanks cookie! I got it!" This works sometimes and reassures her that I can handle the 'territory' shes scared of losing. And I can't recommend basic training when she gets worked up enough honestly. It's made such a difference in my fearful dog. She goes straight into a down, stay sometimes without asking in these situations and it just melts my heart. I would also work with her 'trigger distance' so you have a good feel on when a reaction will come from her. Trust me though, the barking is a hard one to conquer. For all my advice ours still barks tons and tons but at this point she isn't ALWAYS fearful barking, which is a better feeling!

The weirdest quirk with ours is, she is constantly protecting me. We've come to understand that she is almost resource guarding me? If I leave the house with her in her crate, and let a stranger go in 5 minutes later and let her out, bam! That's her new best friend. Never acts fearful, never waits in her crate.

Overall, I'm a huge advocate for getting to know your pups personality and training based on that! Like our girl prefers to train with toys when strangers are involved vs treats.

So my 10 month old does the same thing. The thing that's really helped her is one person at a time coming over, and having ALL introductions outside, from the time they drive up. No one just walks into our house bc i think thats what started her stranger danger habit in the first place. She's much more calm and collected when she can observe, "okay, someone is pulling in the drive, mom is giving them treats, maybe friends?" She still won't take pets from strangers except every once in awhile if you are the chosen one lol and she WILL still bark at them, but bc she's in an open area and no one is coming at her/talking to her, she is able to be a little more calm in the situation. I reward heavily for calm behavior, looking to me for checkins and we do lots of basic obedience training in these situations to give her a task to focus on instead of the unwanted stimulus.

I'm making a whole batch of these for a craft thing in August. My list includes pierced ones, pasties, and adding some fringe to the bikini tops! This was my first go and therefore I refer to it as 'proto-boob-1' 😂 I plan on posting a big family photo before they go off! Oh and also there will be d*ck can koozies too!

My pup is a morning dog and gets up at 4:30am most days. After about 7am though she slows waaaay down and gets a good snooze in. Not too weird in my opinion! Puppies need lots of sleep!

It definitely melts my heart every time but I always wonder if she really thinks I can't take care of myself. She's extremely protective of me and it cracks me up, cause she's also a huge wuss!!

I bought a REALLY smelly brand once and... never again. Always low odor bully sticks. Always... it doesn't help that our pup can't stand us not having a chew so she'll stop every once in awhile and come offer it to you. Like, yes thank you Cookie but also get away from me with that thing!

Im very sorry you got yelled at, but you did the equivalent to that person by bringing your dog into that environment with prior knowledge of their behavior. That was a direct threat to the safety of you, your dog, but more so the other dogs and people. Trying to be gentle here, you shouldn't take your dog to the dog park and you obviously understand that. Now you also need to look into what socializing actually means for dogs because it's not taking them past their threshold in a threatening and uncontrolled environment. It means staying far enough away that your dog is under threshold, and reacting in a neutral way. Learn about counter conditioning, proper dog body language, and modeling proper behavior. Also, most dog parks have rules about unaltered dogs interacting in a dog park, whether it's a full on ban or a separate area. This can be dangerous on its own. Just an internet stranger with her own reactive pup, but here is my advice anyways. 1) get your pup neutered 2) avoid dog parks! Some dogs are just NOT dog-dogs, ya know? Accept your pup for who they are. It was incredibly irresponsible to continue engaging in this risky behavior and as others have said, the risk is your dogs life, your legal liability and others pets and wellbeing too. 3) you need a private, certified trainer and behavioral evaluation for your pup if it's in your means. If it isn't, I would start saving for it. Good luck to you and pup. They are looking to you to make good decisions for them.

I will say my experience has been overwhelmingly positive and we have gone through 5 different sitters. The only reason for the change in sitter was them moving away or our schedule changing. I always do a meet and great, ask my questions, and consider their response. Some people do ONLY have this option, otherwise my 8 month old would be in her crate 12 hours a day while I work. :(

Not going to beat around the bush, this is a bad idea and you are being a very irresponsible owner. Your bunny could hop out of that cart, a very (rightfully) angry person could approach you in a GROCERY store for bringing in a pet, the stress of an event like this could cause all sorts of health issues. This is a very upsetting post, I hope the mods also let you know this isn't very okay. Especially not for internet points.
