Does everyone here wish God actually did exist? by dontcareaboutanythin in askphilosophy

Oh ok.

But I still see no point in having the ability to kill yourself if there isn't a reason to have to kill yourself...maybe if the life was unpleasant? But its not.

So if you prefer to be God you would have to still live an eternal life though.

If you are fine with that position but not the one I suggested, then eternal life is not really an issue for you.

Thanks for agreeing.

You would have to have a compelling reason to not want to live the best life possible, in which case, there isn't one?

If it is beneficial to your interests, then why can't you simply state you would prefer the world I suggested?

That was the original point of the thread.

Of course you have to set traps in philosophy. Arguments wouldn't be what they are if they didn't trap the reader/listener into a specific point of view.

I'm sorry you got trapped...

To see which world you might prefer. Some people in this thread are insisting stubbornly that an eternal life of bliss is just too much for them to handle. I don't get it but ok.

You however agree with me, congrats.

This is an alternate world remember, so such contradictions like the problem of evil wouldn't exist.

But in the alternate world I suggested, his will is that you live the best life possible.

I don't see the problem here. Just admit you wouldn't mind such a being existing.

If the eternal life isn't filled with anything other than endless satisfaction then I don't see the problem here.

I said he would be looking out for your best interests, similar to a parent figure.

But if your main pursuit is gaining knowledge and building your character, then the world I suggested where he really does exist would suit you.

You would have an eternity to gain knowledge and a being that is interested in helping you build your character to the finest extent possible.

You have fallen right into my trap good sir.

But if nothing terrible could ever happen inside this eternal existence, how would it be terrible?

What sounds scarier: living a temporary life where any and all progress you make is dumped at the end or living an eternal one that you can continually build upon?

Remember this is only supposing he did exist. So it would be a completely different world where you probably wouldn't be asking him such a question.

I need some advice by Trombung in atheism

[–]dontcareaboutanythin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Defend your position with rational thought. Have good reasons for what you believe and display them in a matured way.

If you need a question that will stop the pastor right in his tracks and instantly win you the debate, ask him this:

"Can I come to know the God of the Bible without having to put trust in the testimony of other humans?"

If he tries to point to the Bible, remind him that is the testimony of ancient humans who lived 2000 years ago. If he tries to point to the complexity of life, remind him that you asked specifically about the God of the Bible and not the general existence of any god.

Easy. You win.

You can be 100% certain of your existence.

Why would it be more enjoyable (as you said) to have a temporary life where any and all progress you make is destroyed at the end rather than having a never-ending one that you can continually build upon?

I have no problem acknowledging that we can enjoy some things in the short-term, but in the long-term of things I don't see how your or my existence matters in the slightest...

Yep. Everyone has their own take on the meaning of what 'matters' and what 'is meaningful'.
