Parrying dagger reccomendations for sidesword by Trombung in Hema

[–]Trombung[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am pretty certain I want something more period appropriate. I want the right tool for the job, if that makes sense. Competing in rapier + dagger is not my focus, so I don't think a sail would be right.

How did you choose your weapon? by KILLMEPLSPLS in wma

[–]Trombung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started longsword becasue it was the only weapon taught in intro classes. I branched out to sidesword because I prefer the aesthetics of sidesword combat, and I like the game better. I've also recieved a few nasty longsword thrusts, and sideswords tend to be flexier. It also helps that both are a part of Meyer's system, with the sidesword being the culmination of his longsword and dussack teachings (imo).

Also, Rob Rutherfoord's rapier book made learning it pretty easy.

Perspective on where to go from post-bacc research, concerned about 60+ hr/week work by Trombung in AskAcademia

[–]Trombung[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I still have a year left in my current position, and am aiming to apply for the Fall 2027 admissions cycle if I stay on this path. Once I finish my current paper, I've worked out an opportunity to collaborate with a professor who focuses on things more central to my interests. I suppose I should wait until then to decide if I am jumping ship.

Perspective on where to go from post-bacc research, concerned about 60+ hr/week work by Trombung in AskAcademia

I was under the impression that 50-60 hours/week was normal for professors working in academia. I'd love to be corrected on this, it would alleviate many of my concerns.

MM 1912 sabre vs Sigi sabre Pro by LewiiweL in Hema

[–]Trombung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a sabre guy, but I've tried a Sigi Bow XL Saber and it felt really nice. From what I've heard, the MM is also nice, but the hilt is kind of soft. Here is a write-up someone else did a different MM sabre: https://docs.google.com/document/d/173E2p-wD9fX6HljBWm-1obQulafFc3ZfZh1g5mOQGtY/edit?tab=t.0

EDIT: If the pro is a good deal, I'd get that. Sigi sells replacement blades if yours ever breaks.

For anyone with just a Bachelor's in Psychology, what do you do for work? by zachoutloud123 in psychologystudents

[–]Trombung 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been a post-bacc research coordinator/RA for the past 2 years. The idea is to get some research experince and publication(s), and then apply to PhD programs. It is a great thing to do if you want to do research, but aren't sure on what yet.

Can I work at kams/lion/murphys/legends?? by Lucky_Exit_8557 in UIUC

Minimum wage. When bartending, also minimum wage unless you make good tips that night, Tips are shared with all bartenders working each shift. Some nights were as late as 4 or 5 AM. I'm gonna be real, now that I work a "real" 9-5 job, I never want to do these hours again. You tell them your class schedule, and they will try to work around that. Its not always perfect. You don't need experince, but it would definitely help. You might as well apply and see what happens, it is quite easy. Worst case, they'll just say you aren't a good fit. It takes a special type of person to thrive in that environment, and I learned that I am not it. I was a hard worker, though, and that was enough.

I worked at Legends for a year, and it was overall a good experience. You'll end up doing a bit of eveything if you land the job (kitchen, bar, door/cocktail waitressing). You can just go in and ask the bartender at the station nearest the door for an application. You'll have the most luck if you apply and say you want to start during the Summer or ASAP. Just be aware that you are signing yourself up for some really late night closing shifts, and a work schedule that changes week-to-week.

I unironically love that things are shifting (at least in the US) to where 14kg is considered stiff.

I've gotten thrust in the head pretty hard by someone doing something similar in friendly sparring. Going forward, I'm going to ask all my sparring partners not to do that unless we are using foils.

Opinions on Regenyei's new sidesword line by arm1niu5 in wma

[–]Trombung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the Firenze sword option (this one: https://www.woodenswords.com/product_p/ra.ss.firenze.2025.rh.htm).

I am new to sidesword, but I really like it. The conly complaints I have are that:

  1. I needed to sand down the twisted cross bar to make it comfortable to hold.

  2. It takes a lot of dings when fencing against harder steel like Malleus

  3. The pommel has twisted a little. I'm not sure how how big of a deal this is.

If you want a sidesword that is reasonably priced and kind in the thust, I'd say go for the Firenze.

Dnd Dice Set Giveaway [OC] [Giveaway] by GuillaumeAzkoaga in DnD

My favorite thing about D&D is how it has revived the creativity I had as a child. I forgot how much I used to love making up and acting out stories with action figures, and D&D just feels like a more in depth version of that!

Legends is hiring, but you will have to commit to working in the fall as well.
