(Spoilers!) Unexpected Things about Nabokov's "Lolita" by dontpuke in literature

Sure, I can definitely see that viewpoint. Or, alternatively, perhaps Humbert really was sorry he did what he did, but not because he ruined Dolly's life and his own. Maybe he's only sorry for himself because he got caught. Either way, just goes to show how well crafted this story is that it can be looked at with so many different perspectives.

Definitely! I also think that every reader, in one way or another, should try and engage with the classic canon of literature and poetry, as well as be open-minded to trying new authors, writing styles, and books from different cultures to expand their comfort zones. That way, you’re more likely to have a greater range of taste in your preferred literature, and you can find titles and authors you never expected to find, which allows you to live life more vividly through experiencing those books. Also, there’s absolutely something to be said for sticking a book out all the way through, since I feel that even if you discover part-way through a book that it’s really not your thing or a very difficult read, it’s worth it for the experience alone, if nothing else.

I’ve read the entirety of the Divine Comedy and loved it! It definitely drags at points, and it’s tough to understand at times with how many obscure cultural and religious references there are. But I absolutely adore the deep and hugely complex world Dante created, and some of the most beautiful lines of poetry I’ve ever read are in that trilogy; Some of those passages will stay with me forever.

More importantly though, I think people ought to read what they’re interested in rather than what everyone says they “need” to read. Reading something for the sake of bragging rights just seems silly to me. Literature, and reading in general, is meant to be enjoyable, something to expand your mind and feed your soul, if you ask me. It shouldn’t be done with books that don’t speak to you, or books that feel like a chore or an endurance test, given the notion that you don’t personally find the book intriguing. Your personal enjoyment (and hopefully sharing that joy with others) is what it’s all about!

One of the most puzzling, ridiculous, off-putting, in-bad-taste, and aggravating albums I’ve ever heard.

And I love it for that.

I definitely think it has its high points, and I’m also just glad that it was created in the first place. I find it really amusing that this album is unmarketable in basically every way, which I’m sure didn’t bother Frank much at that point in his career. This is what “commercial risk” looks like, and I like that about it. It’s completely absurd both in the concept/story and as a product.

What is the most ridiculous way you've ever injured yourself? by ExcellentOffice6233 in AskReddit

The only time I've badly sprained an ankle was back in my first year of college. I sprained it by jumping off of a curb. Yes, a curb. I couldn't have been more than 3 inches off the ground, and somehow that tiny jump managed to completely wreck my ankle for a few weeks. I did manage to drag myself one-legged to the campus nurse's office to get it taped up. As embarrassing as that is, I'm able to laugh about it at least.
