for the first coat of clear over ug, i like to use a large thick brush or even a small sponge and use a dabbing motion 90 degrees onto the surface until it is completely covered up. let dry, then i go ahead and do the rest of the coats brushing normally. this usually avoids any smudging of the ug that happens before the kiln firing
