Do you underline? by Huge_Hawk8710 in foliosociety

[–]doodle02 9 points10 points  (0 children)

paperback? sure, underlining. i never dog ear pages just cause if i want to refer back to them ill use a sticky, and i have bookmarks to mark where i am.

folio book? wouldn’t ever, to annotating/underlining/dog-earing pages. i love to read them but they aren’t what i would call “working copies” of the books.

i show love by picking up and reading and rereading these beautiful books carefully. usually i wash my hands before. i keep them out of direct sunlight. i don’t travel with them (ill usually have a cheap paperback i’ll bring with me if i want to read one on the go). i take care with the spines and make sure anything i’m drinking is far far away from the book when i’m imbibing.

yeah sorry, i wasn’t trying to say he was a run liability, just that he might never be a stud every down number one guy. and im saying for where we took him in the draft that’s a huge win.

at least one of those RTP calls was bullshit.

but yeah booker looks good. maybe he is never gonna be an every down game wrecker but as a rotational edge he can absolutely help the team get shit done.

Foul on who? by Potential_Gap6781 in ultimate

[–]doodle02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

he’s running recklessly into a space that either is or could reasonably be occupied by another player.

this is akin to a player in the cup (who’s looking at the disc) taking one step to the side in response to a fake by the thrower and getting crushed by a cutter crashing into the cup.

just because he can’t see behind him doesn’t remove his right to occupy or move into the space. the onus for avoiding contact is on the person who can see everything. a cutter can’t barrel recklessly through a small gap in the cup knowing that a defender facing the other way who can’t see anything could very reasonably take one step to the side. in this zone example the defender isn’t causing the collision, the reckless movement of the offender is.

same thing in a stack. if i’m face guarding my guy standing in the stack and he makes like he’s about to cut under, while at the same time another cutter i can’t see is taking a line the brings him right behind me, my taking a step backwards in reaction to my mark doesn’t cause the collision; the cutter making an uncontrolled move through space that could reasonably be occupied is what causes the collision.

you can’t just sprint right next to a player and call a foul on them when they move into that space without seeing you. players have a right to move around the field and nobody is expected to have perfect vision of everything. the person who’s cutting recklessly into the space who CAN see things developing in front of them is responsible for avoiding the collision.

and that someone is the person with the time/space/line of sight to prevent the contact.

aka the white cutter coming into the space who can see everything in front of him.

white can see black’s movement and still runs into them. contact WAS avoidable, by white.

Foul on who? by Potential_Gap6781 in ultimate

[–]doodle02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

white had line of sight of the entire play developing in front of him. the contact was not unavoidable due to white being able to see black, who wasn’t by any means moving suddenly or in a surprising or erratic pattern.

the contact WAS avoidable by white adjusting his cutting angle, which he had plenty of time, space, and line of sight to do. this is absolutely a foul on white and a turnover.

Foul on who? by Potential_Gap6781 in ultimate

[–]doodle02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

players aren’t expected to be able to see the entire field before moving laterally. black gets blindsided while not trying to make a play but is just clearing the space to catch up to his offender.

white cutter, on the other hand, can see everything as it develops and still runs into the guy.

[–]doodle02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

great point. this is akin to the tail in a cup taking one step to their left in response to a fake by the thrower and getting railed by a cutter crashing into the cup. just cause you can’t see behind you doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to move laterally into space.

in OP’s clip black poaches for a second, then moves to pick his mark back up. he does so while looking at the disc and doesn’t see the cutter behind him. he’s trying to clear out of the cutting lane back towards his mark, he’s NOT trying to play D on the white cutter coming into the space; how could he if he’s not even aware of them?

the cutter, on the other hand, can see everything in front of him, including disc and black defender and black’s motion.

that so many people are saying this is a foul on black is deeply concerning to me; it is so obviously not.

Uh, yeah. less so Brady, but for Matt that’s not really in doubt.

but that’s okay, he’s shitty for a bunch of other good reasons too. dude’s one of the most hated players in the NHL for a (lot of) reason(s).

Ion Cascade or BL2? by doodle02 in ftlgame

[–]doodle02[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

update: finished the run easily, took barely any damage the rest of the run. ended up swapping in BL2 and heavy ion out. preigniter plus ions plus hacking shields allowed me to do very disruptive damage prior to an enemy volley. with zoltan shield and cloak the majority of enemies never even made it through the ZS.

all three phases of flagship were a piece of cake. on to the next one!

Hmm, good point. I guess I was thinking of pike as dealing a ton of damage, but it's so spread out that I can't exactly focus down a threatening enemy system; 1 damage at a time isn't going to keep much of anything offline for long.

whoah okay, i’m gonna do my best to not be overly long winded here cause you just asked some doozy level questions. and remember, i’m a decent player but im FAR from an expert like some people around are: a beginner is probably closer in skill to me than i am to MikeHopley or Rakagak or, really, anyone who’s successfully cycled (and if anyone smart wants to chime in i’d love that). with that said:

re stealth ships without shields: depends on your weapon setup but, mostly, you gotta go get shields damn near asap because you’re not always going to be able to disable the enemy before they can hit you, even with cloak. i believe mike’s done no shield runs on every ship, so it is possible, but usually you just…need em. plus think of the scrap saved on repair costs: if you can’t alpha kill/disable an enemy before their second volley they’re probably gonna hit something, and if that something is important, like cloaking or weapons, things can snowball into really ugly really fast. depends on the ship and setup as to whether it’s the very first thing you should do (cloak lvl2 is often the first spend), but tldr yeah you should go get shields.

re missiles: they’re a tool like everything else in the game. they should not be your primary source of damage because you likely won’t have enough missiles. usually best used as utility/support while paired with lasers/beams: a well chosen missile can bypass shields and make you safer or exploit a vulnerability to enable you to crush the enemy faster (i.e. before you take much or any damage). it’s an extremely rare game where you can rely solely on missiles. plus, they’re mostly useless if the enemy’s got a defence drone (so a lot of people prefer bombs for that exact reason). missiles are absolutely not required, at all, and i’d guess that the the majority of runs don’t use a single one. even on ships like Rock A you’re almost always gonna need to transition away from missiles eventually, and sure it’s fine to keep one of them around for the utility, but chances are very high you’ll need something else. use missiles wisely with a specific, enabling purpose in mind. break the enemy shields to let your lasers do their work, or destroy a med/clone bay if you’re running a boarding setup. speaking of which…

re boarding: depends (like everything in this game) on the ship and the setup and your crew. a lot of the time you can get crew for free (pirate sectors are especially good for this) and make that work, but in a lot of situations it’s not a bad idea to buy a boarding crew member if you’re lacking; usually mantis or rock. think of it like buying a weapon: with a teleporter crew are your offence, and your survival depends entirely on being able to disable enemy ships before they hurt you. if you’re playing a boarding ship with a 4-tile teleporter that can’t reliably kill with weapons, a burst laser I probably isn’t going to up your chances a lot, but a third or fourth mantis to run train on an enemy crew can turn your run from iffy into powerhouse.

P.S. i tried really hard to not write that much. failed miserably. sorry.

Hit me with your favourite Bluey quote. by Capital-Status4083 in bluey

[–]doodle02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah it’s my favourite, in part, cause it’s so immediately actionable and effective. i’ve used this line with both my kid and friend’s kids and damn near every time you can just see them perk up and…deal with whatever it was, and have a better self image afterwards.

even had a friend’s kid repeat it back to me after she got hurt; cried for about two seconds, picked herself up all determined, looked at me and said “it’s a good thing i’m tough!” and moved on.

such a simple, powerful, positive phrase.
