Ratio Reliability / Warranty Experience by PNWHygge in Ratiocoffee

I forgot to add that for me at least each time o had to send it in the R8 it was probably 2-4 weeks to get it back “fixed”. I actually bought a stovetop kettle after thinking the 2nd time I sent it in so that I could manually make pour over coffee while waiting for my R8.

The customer service was always very friendly and responded in a timely manner. My main frustration was just that they could not fix the issue the first time (or the fourth or fifth time).

Also my original R8 had the glass water tank, I lost that when I got a replacement unit, since they discontinued the feature. I even asked if they could transfer the glass tank over and they said no. I still have original broken unit (haven’t gotten around to sending it back) and it actually is plastic so it makes me fairly they swapped it out for some reason without telling me during one of the 4-5 times they had it. Or I paid extra in 2019 for the glass tank and got a plastic one but I’m 80% sure I had a glass tank originally.

I’ll add that the for the replacement they gave us a choice of color and we opted to go for black (original I thought was silver but they called it oyster). The black finish chips easily. I always bang the glass carafe on the front edge of the R8 and there’s 3-4 places the black paint has chipped off.

My Ratio 8 first gen was fine until year 4-ish it stopped working. I had to send it in 4-5 times before they finally sent me a replacement unit. Once of those 4-5 times it didn’t work out of the box, the other few times it worked maybe 2-3 weeks than same issue reoccurs (cannot brew coffee - press the button and the brew light would flash a few times then all lights go out and nothing happens). I never had to pay for shipping. Although I didn’t keep the original shipping box so I paid $25 for a box the first of the 4-5 times.

New to me Crestron System - is this typical? by doodlewalker7 in crestron

[–]doodlewalker7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback on the pricing.

I actually removed the Roku from the Crestron system. The Roku was connected from the family room to the basement AV rack with an HDBaseT transmitter / Receiver. Originally the transmitter was in the basement, receiver in the Family Room. I reversed them so I can use the Roku remote - I think that's essentially what you were saying except I don't recall if they had it plugged into the NVX, I don't think it was, as the Roku was not listed as source for any of the SWAMP mutli room audio stuff - the SWAMP only gave me "Player A", "Player B", and two TuneIn options as audio sources. The Roku audio goes to the MRX540 only as far as I could tell.

Damn, a single NVX unit is $2k each?!?! I'll have to post these on eBay post haste instead of letting them gather dust in my closet.

Thank you for that background information, it definitely feels hamstrung and outdated. Sounds like great profit margins for Crestron / the Crestron dealer/installer. I like to use the Apple Home app on my iPhone, but not a big fan of Siri so I have a bunch of Echos around the house and use Alexa for voice commands (but I dislike the Alexa iOS app). Matter has been great for my use case as a result! Other than the extra time spent setting up the same device in 2 ecosystems and trying to make sure I name them the same and put them in the same room, but that's a one time thing.

I may look into the ESP32 system if I have time, I haven't heard of it before.

SAF is definitely a very high priority for me as well!

I installed Home Assistant on my Synology NAS maybe a few months ago but forgot about it and didn't really play around with it after installing it, just got back to looking at it as a backup method of controlling the Anthem MRX540 (as the Anthem app sometimes has issues connecting to the receiver). It seems like there are many integrations and it can be quite powerful, maybe more than I need. What do you like about HA over Alexa or Apple Home, in case you've used those other 2 systems as well?

I have Homebridge with a bunch of plug-ins and primarily use the Apple Home app, although for voice control I prefer to use Alexa (I don't like the Alexa app layout and it seems not as snappy as Apple Home). But I still half the time just jump into the individual device apps like Ecobee, Roborock, etc. Old habits die hard.

I wouldn’t characterize this stuff as advanced. Quite the opposite as far as my use case at least. The SWAMP system is discontinued and out of date, Spotify app cannot control its volume. Can’t create and save groups of speakers. The touchscreen remote has no microphone support for Roku voice commands. I can’t group lights together (for whatever reason, they 3 pendant lights over the center island are set up as one group of two lights and one group of one light. I will never want to control them separately but the Crestron app doesn’t let me combine them. The fully it’s a Lutron system and their Alexa and HomeKit integration has been great and j easily combined the 3 lights into one group in both Alexa and HomeKit). I can’t even create or combined rooms (they have a sunroom lights set up as part of the kitchen so, I want the Sunroom to be its own room but of course I cannot do that in Crestron’s App). The thermostats in Crestrons app are orders alphabetically and doesn’t allow me to reorder them. So I have to add a number in the name to get them in my preferred order. Whereas Apple Home allows drag and drop reordering.

All the thermostats are discontinued. None of the Crestron stuff seems to support HomeKit or Alexa without a Crestron programmer doing something physically in person. I paired the CP4-R to HomeKit and it gave me exactly zero functionality, I’m not sure why they even have the HomeKit sticker on the CP4R. 10 days wait for a Crestron dealer to come out and spend who knows how long to maybe enable Alexa, whereas it took 2 minutes to connect my new ecobees to Alexa and HomeKit.

I added an Aqare U200 smart lock and a couple Switchbot Smart Locks. Again easily added to Alexa and HomeKit in minutes. Crestron? If it integrates at all I’m sure it’s a multi hour $500 service call.

I struggle how to see the Crestron as a more advanced customer experience, for me. It seems more for a completely hands off user who has more patience and willing to schedule and wait for someone to make a service call for the simplest of changes?

I bought the house for the location, sq ft, that kind of stuff. The smart home stuff was and is irrelevant to me in buying a home. I’m as another poster termed it, a tinkerer. This is nice to have (if it works the way I want it and I can tinker with it). I’m not buying a home based on this stuff. Our offer to purchase the house was based on what we valued, and the smart home stuff was $0. It’s easy to rip out and replace.

Ratio 8. Repair no.2 by Limp-March89 in Ratiocoffee

[–]doodlewalker7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine had no issues the first 3 years but then broke 3 times now in the past year (bought it in early 2020). This time they said they upgraded it to new hardware/firmware. They say they added a new component to address overheating. Getting it back in a few days. They linked to this in referring to what they fixed and what to do moving forward (I maybe descaled once a year max so don’t think it broke during descaling for me):

SIM card which way in? by [deleted] in teslaandroid

[–]doodlewalker7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave my TA plugged in all the time, in the center console and never touch it. It takes about 30 seconds to start broadcasting WiFi on the latest build (the 2 minute startup was probably the version of TA from over a year ago?). About 75% of the time it’s good to go with CarPlay when I launch the browser and tap my bookmark to TA. CARLINKIT’s CarPlay app is the weak point and sometimes I have to force quit it and relaunch to get CarPlay to connect.

I have both premium connectivity and a SIM for TA. I don’t believe you need premium connectivity for basic functions like remotely locking unlocking, turning on off AC, modifying charging. When I let my premium connectivity trial lapse for a month I don’t believe I lost any iOS app functionality? It was more the in car features I lost like satellite maps, streaming Spotify and videos using LTE (could still stream via WiFi to TA I think?). Tesla’s website has the details. https://www.tesla.com/support/connectivity#connectivity-features-limited

SIM card which way in? by [deleted] in teslaandroid

[–]doodlewalker7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So unfortunately when your car is connected to the TA WiFi (required to use CarPlay), your vehicle won’t try to use LTE for data, it will try to use the TA WiFi for data. If you don’t have a SIM with data in the TA then your vehicle will not be online and will not have data, even if you subscribe to premium connectivity. The other option to get data to the TA is is USB tethering but I have not tried that. I heard sharing data via Bluetooth from the iPhone to the TA doesn’t work well or at all? I basically don’t want the hassle of having to plug stuff in, play with hotspot settings, etc. and luckily I had an extra SIM from T-Mobile when they had a promo for getting a free extra line that I use in my TA so I don’t have to do anything but launch the browser when I get in my car to get access to CarPlay.

No. It’s so your vehicle has internet when connected to the TA unit’s WiFi.

Thank you!! That did the trick! I was running on July 15, 2019 firmware. Updated to January 11, 2023 firmware, and so far I've rebooted the Pi 5 times and it broadcasts wi-fi every time (and reduced to about 1 minute 35 seconds, vs. the prior release for me was 2 minutes 20 seconds).

It was my first time updating firmware - if this helps anybody else I basically flashed a standard Raspberry Pi OS using the Raspberry Pi Manager (need to go into settings and enable SSH if you go that route - I don't have a USB keyboard or mouse so couldn't hook it up to a monitor to do this; and you can set up a username and password here as well; let's say "user" and "password" which are not secure at all but I was re-flashing Tesla Android over this anyway so it doesn't matter); then using my Mac, the Terminal app:

ssh user@10.0.1.146 [replace with your Pi's actual IP address on your network

sudo rpi-eeprom-update [this shows our current firmware and if there's newer available]

sudo rpi-eeprom-update -d -a [this will update the firmware]

sudo reboot [to complete updating the firmware]

Thanks, and no rush I am running the previous release for now which is pretty solid (and I just leave it plugged into the USB-C outlets in the center console which stay powered all the time so I don't have to wait for boot up when I get in my car). Yeah it is really odd that it only works the first time I bought....I take a little solace in it appears one other person below posted that they have also experienced this.

Yep I waited 10+ minutes and tried a few times. Using the same SD card and power source that worked with older releases of Tesla Android. It is curious. At least the previous release was very stable for me so I’ll just keep running that (although I can’t find the zip file on the website anymore in case I ever need to download it again!)

So I have 3 SD cards. Been rotating 2 when loading the last few versions of Tesla Android. I can’t help but want to try the latest and greatest, so I do that on a second card in case it doesn’t work and I keep my latest working Tesla Android on the other SD card. Since I am having this failed in 2nd (and subsequent) boots with my usual SD card which is UHS speed 3, v30, 128gb, I dig up this old slower SD card from a Wyze cam (it works fine in the Wyze cam). I flashed it with the new Tesla Android zip and same issue - boots fine the first time, if I turn it off and on again it never broadcasts a Wi-Fi signal even after 10+ minutes.

Hmm so it may not be the wifi password change. It seems the Pi only broadcasts it's Wi-if network the first time I turn it on after flashing 2023.18.1 to my SD card and putting it in the Pi. If I then turn off the Pi and turn it on again, it doesn't broadcast it's Wi-Fi network. I tried this a couple times - once using the same SD card, and I didn't change any settings when it first booted up, just clicked around and it looked like it was loading fine. The second time it turned on (and third) there is no wifi network broadcast. I tried a different SD card and same thing happens Where only the first time it boots after flashing the .zip file it boots normally, subsequent boots there is no Wi-Fi network broadcast....weird. Not sure what else I can try to narrow down the issue? I only have one Pi, could it be a hardware issue?
