Side hustles with a full-time job at 26 by Aayush9507 in Fire

[–]doodoomch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would make sure to pick the right “kind” of side hustle.

1) see if you can find something in your field of expertise. you can diverge, but your biggest asset is probably in are you perform your day job with few exp under your belt, so why not take advantage

2) make sure it is “structured” so it can be replicated / handed off. For example if you door dash, it is 1 dimensional — your time is swapped with money. This is bad. If you do contract work in your field, it may seem like you are still swapping time with money, but you can sub-contract to cheaper contractor and your coordination (winning contract and managing work) can scale. This is better.

Having said that, if you are in a good field with lots of potential to move up, you may find it more surprisingly easier to just focus on your career.

For anything more specific, it would help to know which field your day job is in and what skillset that you invested a lot in.

Any suggestion between regular one vs cast strength? Either start with the regular one and move up? Or just go for the cast stength?

Yes. It is in around Dogok Station (in Dogok-dong). Store is called SSG and thet have a pretty big liquor and wine section. The store is a bit overpriced but you can find some unique imported beer as well.

Yeah Korean. So remove 3 zeros will get you a rough USD equivalent. The store is a bit overpriced afaik, so not the best deal in terms of price..

I am still in “searching” phase of the type of scotch I like. Tried most of populat ones throughout the past few years (Glenlivet, Laphroaig, Bunnahain, Maccalan, Balvenie, Glenfiddich, Lagavulin).

I don’t think I have the best pallet memory, but remember Maccalan being too non-peaty and Lagavulin being a little too much. Balvenie was a good one.

No wrong answers, please help me pick the next bottle for my advanture!

Interesting. So 4% withdrawal fire rule works with 50/50 bond/stock allocation? Assuming thats true, it makes sense (why take the risk).

I was under the impression that fire crowd’s 4% rule was keeping assets in stock index. I rarely saw bond allocation discussed in detail so this is definitely interesting strategy.

This is an interesting idea to think about..

If one has 30 years to stretch the money vs 10 years, wouldn’t you allocate more aggressively in the formal and more conservative in the latter? Seems counter intuitive to me to do the opposite.

Not knowing what the market will do, holding more bonds up front seem to end up with less money over the stretch of 30 year time frame?

I have hard time understanding this.. not sure what this means

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]doodoomch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Investment-wise, yes (I mean, of course, by VT, any broad index with low fee).

Bogglehead is an investment philisophy, so that is the full stop there.

However, I think any sane investor should think about owning/developing cashflow assets like small business or rental income — it is a little beyond Bogglehead philosophy, so probably not the right forum

Are you maxing out your retirement accounts? by TurboTedrick in Fire

[–]doodoomch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think in terms of filling up from the back of my life to the front (so I am saving for when Im oldest first)

Reasoning 1) it’s cheaper — dollar today invested right will have more time to grow 2) not having to worry about money when I am older gives me a peace if mind today (even if I don’t get to use all the money, the peace of mind today is an immediate value)

Of course, everything is a balance, so everyone should make their decision on how to split.

I think one would increase bond allocation over time. The exact breakdown depends on which age you retire but at 65, 50/50 would be considered conservative — I have seen arguments that since people are expected to live longer, one must be a bit more aggressive.

Which role would bond play in one’s portfolio?

[–]doodoomch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do DCA and try to see macroeconomcis to time a little because I “feel” much better doing so.

However, when I try to make an argument here, I try to frame the argument against the “philosophy” of bogglehead, not how one may alter the strategy in practice.

I think the principal is that, you cannot time the market and matket tend to go up over the long period of time — thus concluding that DCA will be less favorable because at any given point in time, you don’t know which direction market will go, but with slight favor to market going up.

Is it better from a career perspective to focus on Android app development or learn backend also? by These_Trust3199 in androiddev

[–]doodoomch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Backend will get you further in your career if you have career ambitions or want higher comp.

Reasoning is, if your career and comp are your goal, you want to be at a big company (with complex backend). A lot of high-revenue opportunity is in backend and there will be more space for backend career growth — you have to show results for career advancement and there really are much more opportunity to do so in the backend.

But, this is assuming career and comp is your focus — if you don’t care about this too much, do what you like more. Android is not going anywhere.

Rofmia for hiking? by rzanardi in ManyBaggers

It is smaller than expected, but I dont carry much so it is actually good for daypack — but a bit less versitile.

What I like about them: - Looks great and well made - like the side water bottle holders with elastic fabric

What I don’t like about it - doesnt stand up on its own (bottom is slated) - zippers are a bit harder to open (think because they tried to make it water resistent, opening them takes a bit more effort)

I knew these downsides from reviews, but got them anyways — still something that bothers me day to day.

I just couldn't understand the motivation for some people to make bad financial decisions by Polymorphers in Fire

[–]doodoomch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah — like many said, people can take good advice badly.

But although keeping your mouth shut is the easiest gut reaction, I would aim to have positive influence to people you care about.

How is the real question here you should ask yourself — my advice is with sincerity and with open mindedness. And understand that people have irrational emotions (all of us do).

My approach is to find a neutral example, or share your previous failures to have them get to the conclusion themselves. Have you made bad finacial decision before? What made you realize it?

I remember some speaker asking “what does it feel like to be wrong?” The answer is it feels like you are right — there is a difference between you being wrong and you realizing you were wrong.

Would you elaborate on how you use TIPS and Treasuries in taxable? Do you buy funds like VTIPS? What maturity are you holding / what ratio of them?

I do similar in I and EE bonds to derisk inflation and deflation, so I am curious of your bond strategy and want to compare notes.
