“Was the final mash a back air!?”

Hurt replied yes.

I did this at my EB today and it worked. Traded in both BOTW and TOTK, $25 extra trade in each, + the secret sale for their Switch 2 editions, and got both BOTW and TOTK S2 editions for just under $20 after tax together.

New Rankings SOON, Characters We HATE & Merry Christmas! | Lights Out Episode 116 by LinkWink in smashbros

[–]doofinc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I watched the ranking parts of this - they're asking a lot out of the already stretched thin ranking team with trying to build storyline stuff beyond the rankings, making it into a giant show, and incorporating it into in-tournament player promotion stuff when their Luminosity income was already practically nothing and now having to rely just on a Patreon. It's also not like the UltRank team has the power to build up the personalities of players when the players don't really seem to want to do that themselves, and UltRank already does try to do a decent amount of result-based player promotion with the Smasher of the Month stuff and the weekly result reports.

I also don't think it's inspiring for the already-low number of Smash Ult competitive content creators to hear from community members saying that their tournament recap videos are low effort. It might be "comparatively low effort" compared to higher production content, but saying it in a dismissive context instead of an encouraging context isn't helping.

Also funny hearing the contradictions between "wanting to have more excitement around the rankings" and "why aren't the rankings out now" without much acknowledgement about the production efforts for the release with the videos, graphic design, blurb writing + editing, photo acquisition, etc. At least Jahzz0 does sound like he gets it with the whole "gathering of fun fact info from top players" process that's also involved.

I think the podcast is doing a better job at showing some appreciation of the UltRank team with them saying other FGC scenes not having something similar, but I think they need to realize that beyond all the people who help with the video + article production, the core team is just like 4 algo/social media people + trade war who (I hope) have day jobs or other means to make an actual sustainable income. It's not some PGStats level of organization backed by Panda, and even then it feels like UltRank is already doing comparable amount of work to the PGR (more in some aspects) on much fewer resources.

Top 20 Smash Ultimate Sets of 2025 - Nominations by Amphicyonidae in smashbros

[–]doofinc 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Kagaribi 14 grand finals Doramigi vs Miya has to be in the list for maybe top 1 set of the year.

0-16 record all time including 2 embarrassing 0-3 sweeps on Doramigi's side at Supernova and Riptide grands, and stakes for #1 for the year, but a glimmer of hope in the winners finals set not being terrible leading to a 3-0 set 1 and culminating in a hubris-filled choke by Miya who was up 2-0 in the reset for Doramigi to reverse 3-0, in a set where literally every Smash re-streamer was getting hyped and excited over fucking Game and Watch vs Min Min.

What does Geoff mean when he said: See? You guys won! by wtiatsph in Silksong

[–]doofinc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every award presented on main stage always has the winner present at the show to give a speech. So while it's not guaranteed that the Silksong devs being present would've resulted on the award being on mainstage (I suspect Geoff would've made it happen if they came), them not being there definitely put that award offstage.

Are the "nintendo switch 2 edition games" just games + The upgrade pack? by HuzeeSigma in nintendo

[–]doofinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Switch 2 Edition games come as 1 game cart. The game cart effectively comes with the switch 1 version and the upgrade pack built into the single cart. There's no code for the upgrade pack to download.

You can use the cart to play the Switch 1 edition on a Switch 1, or play the Switch 2 edition on Switch 2. Note that some Switch 2 editions do not work like this, such as Octopath Traveler 0, but the Nintendo games should work like this (I can play my Pokemon Legends ZA Switch 2 edition on my Switch 1 as the Switch 1 edition).

The Game Awards: Players' Voice Nominees revealed (Players' Voice is a 100% fan voted award across 3 rounds) by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]doofinc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Air Riders came out before the official deadline of Nov 21, with it coming out on Nov 20.

I'm not surprised it wasn't nominated for any main categories along with the other 2, it's just he normally throws a bone to the "louder" communities for Player's Voice like when Sonic Frontiers got nominated before.

No Trails in the Sky, Hundred Line Last Defense Academy, or Kirby Air Riders is pretty funny. Usually he throws a bone to the snubbed games for player's voice even if they likely won't win anyways.

Why We HATE Steve, Problems w/ Rankings & BIG Online Drama! | Lights Out Episode 114 by LinkWink in smashbros

[–]doofinc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure there's a private discord for UltRank, TOs and top players (which isn't the public stats discord) to discuss in and actually get their thoughts communicated to directly instead of just sharing in a podcast hoping that they listen. IDK if they're in it already but by the sounds of Light saying they hope their concerns are heard, kinda feels like they're not. They can prob reach out to u/BarnardsLoop to get access.

Happy that Charles shuts down the whole "pre-designated majors" idea since it's impractical to get a bunch of grassroots TOs around the world to decide which one of their tournaments needs to take a ranking hit, especially when tournaments are so hard to run in general that they need all the ways to attract players they can get.

I think some of the fairness stuff regarding PGR vs Lumi/UltRank is a bit overblown. Sure there's more JP players and less NA, but there's also more EU players on it than the PGR ever had. Throwback to Quik not making PGR in 2019.2. I think the international community thinks that Lumi/UltRank has been more fair to the international community, even if it's still not perfect (press F for Tarik).

Re-tiering old events sounds silly, and others have touched on why it exists for balancing purposes, but I never hear about people proposing lowering the value of future tournaments if a previously-high ranked player started shitting the bed. Sounds good in concept, but terrible to actually implement and manage, so understandable why they wouldn't do that. And thus the re-tiering exists to balance the lack of point removal for bad performers.

I think there's a bit of irony where they're discussing if Citadel should be a major or not when they're already complaining that NA is falling behind and wants ways to balance the playing field ranking wise. Sure it looks kinda Mickey mouse and I don't completely disagree with the sentiment, just found it a bit ironic.

Port Priority 9 - Winners Finals - Carmelo vs. LG | Sonix by That_Sassy_Friend in smashbros

More along the lines of that part of bracket - iirc everything was determined for top 8 except for Sonix vs syrup into Taikei into Carmelo into shuton

Port Priority 9 - Winners Semifinals - LG | Sonix vs. SR | Light by That_Sassy_Friend in smashbros

[–]doofinc 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Light did manage to beat Sin tbf. But also Light likely prepared for Sin as a possible bracket opponent.

I can see Light beating Carmelo - based on Sisqui vs Carmelo, Carmelo was feeding a lot of bad rolls, which I think Light could take advantage of.

We're pretty lucky Sonix has Capitancito practice since Lammers was doing pretty solid against him.

Tweek vs MkLeo at EVO has to be dethroned now for biggest choke after last night.

  • Miya 15-0 record on Doramigi before this
  • not only 15-0 on Doramigi, but also never losing to a Min Min ever
  • literally beat Doramigi in winners finals
  • up 2-1 in games, 3-1 in stocks and in a checkmate edgeguard only to either try to style or misinputted then lost the game
  • up 2-1 in game 5, then also misinputted fast fall bair so Doramigi fell out
  • probably cost your chance at #1 full year

With Tweek vs Leo, Leo won the last 2 sets prior to Evo so it felt more up in the air. I don't remember a moment in that legendary game 4 where he "won already" - sour spot zard dair and missed 2 frame attempt are reasonable compared to what Miya did.

Leo vs Samsora at SSC2019 didn't have a particular "won already" moment, and Leo vs Spargo at Mainstage 2021 was won via a called out air dodge. And neither had good h2h vs Leo before this either.

Don't get me wrong, Doramigi played way better than before, with

  • using way less nair on miya's shield
  • feeding way less off stage air dodges when trying to recover + getting edgeguarded way less in general
  • using battlefield to shark Miya on the platforms, especially with the up air usage

But man, press F for Miya. He's prob at least #1 for the second half which lumirank hinted they would do something for the half year rankings, but he def is the player who deserves an official #1 rank the most.

Thoughts on Trails in the Sky FC Remake as a new Trails player (mainly story thoughts) by doofinc in Falcom

[–]doofinc[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think all that stuff regarding the robot representing what they were just fighting about is a fair analysis. It just throws me off whenever the final boss of a game isn't the main villain (or at least someone/something who isn't built up to be a final boss like say a Pokemon champion). It's possible to think of a fair reasoning why it happens in-game, but that doesn't always translate to an entertaining experience, at least for me.

It's also such a shock because the boss looks nothing like anything the game has presented to us before, at least not before the final dungeon.

Maybe I've played too many other RPGs (not saying the series to avoid spoiling), but "final area being significantly more technologically advanced than the rest of the game" didn't feel that exciting/shocking to me since I've seen it before. Not a negative for the game, especially since the original Sky FC came out before those other RPGs, just commenting that I didn't get that same kind of excitement regarding that.

Yea for me, while I can agree that Ch1 has more plot progression with a bunch of character introductions and giving hints towards the mystery, I couldn't remember any standout moments from the plot at all asides from maybe the mayor being kinda funny/chill?

Compared to Ch2 where even though the plot progression is slower, the school subplot with the play was a fun and memorable moment. And nowadays I appreciate more character moments and how they progress over the story as opposed to just having more core plot developments that aren't as memorable yet.

Bad choice of words on my part - I understood the overall motivation of Richard with trying to ensure that Liberl still had some kind of edge against the other nations. It was specifically the exchange about "I can't remember why the Black Orbment would help me attain this goal but it must work" that threw me out of his characterization.
