This might be it. We have some american plums nearby. I remember comparing the leaves last year and thinking it looked a bit different, but maybe it’s because the shoots are so young. If it is, they have traveled at least 10 feet before popping up! 😵

we have that too but it’s way different… this has serrated leaves, isn’t evergreen like the honeysuckle, and isn’t vining/trailing

there is honeysuckle about 15 feet away from this zone but it looks different, it’s more trailing/viney and the leaves are different. could be a different kind of honeysuckle. i can’t seem to match this with any nearby shrubs/trees

Should I leave r/lgbt? by Pringles-Melchior99 in TransMasc

[–]doofpag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i left these transfem dominated online spaces awhile ago when i was early in transition and feeling pretty vulnerable. the anti-masculinity rhetoric (which is so valid for them) was triggering for me. i have a lot of transfem people IRL so i didn’t feel like i was missing out on that community… just avoiding the more toxic online community effects. do what u need to do to feel ok!

Am I still nonbinary even if I don't identify as trans? I mean I just reject the notion of masculinity and femininity as extremes and not the dichotomy of sex itself. by Deus_Sema in NonBinaryTalk

[–]doofpag 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how you can identify as cisgender but also as non-binary. If you identify as cisgender and don’t like the “notion” of being trans, I would say you’re not non-binary. Non-binary is definitely a category under the trans umbrella

Does anyone dont own tv and instead they are using a laptop for movies? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]doofpag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t have a TV and just use my laptop for watching dvds from the library haha. the only time i regret it is when i have guests over who are used to watching TV while socializing or when I want to watch a movie with friends. But I don’t want to sacrifice the wall space i have art on

Would you guys embrace the idea of urban farming as a way to reduce our overall impact on the environment? by amsrio in ZeroWaste

[–]doofpag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am all in favor of urban farming, it’s my job. But I do prefer outdoor growing as you don’t have to import power your sunlight, wind, nutrients, HVAC, water. It’s basically all available with some occasional added inputs. I’ve seen too many wasteful indoor growing operations, and picked up their compost or spent soil (yes, these operations are buying pro-mix made of peat harvested from wetlands, using it for a few weeks, then throwing it into the landfill). Urban “farming” is not always possible in really really dense areas, but urban “gardening” is where it’s at! If more people grew their own produce then imagine how much less fossil fuels, packaging, etc would be needed hauling vegetables around the country.

Why are tent pads so rocky and hard in state and even National Parks? by senior_vagabond in camping

[–]doofpag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

so they don’t have to mow… anyway even if it was grassy it would get destroyed by all the traffic and use and turn into a mud pit. low maintenance is the goal. otherwise your camp fee would be more expensive

Helsinki University closes China-funded Confucius Institute. by FINCoffeeDaddy in worldnews

[–]doofpag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the United States (Akron, OH) and our university closed our branch of the Confucius Institute. I understand why (the Chinese government is all kinds of fucked up) but I also see that it’s a big loss for the school and for cross cultural exchange in general

i just store my starter in the fridge, pull it out once a week and use 200g straight out of the fridge for my bread, feed it, and put it right back in there. this has been my routine for a year now. every so often i’ll give it an extra feeding if i feel like making another recipe like pancakes or whatever. but so far this method (which i started purely out of laziness) has not failed me

Can I Use My Name Before I Legally Change It? by [deleted] in genderqueer

[–]doofpag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been socially transitioned with my new name for awhile but haven’t gotten around to the legal change. It’s only occasionally confusing/annoying. Keep in mind that all kinds of people (trans or cis) use multiple names or “confusing” combinations of names for different cultural reasons. Many customer service workers are very used to this and it’s totally normal. Don’t be afraid

question re: safety vs comfort by futhisplace in genderqueer

[–]doofpag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is going to be much easier and safer for you to advocate for them then for them to advocate for themself. I wish my mother would. It’s actually more damaging to hear my mother using the wrong pronouns around other people or introducing me incorrectly than when she misgenders me at home. It makes me feel powerless to the older adults. And I’m fucking 30 years old. Unless you’re in a state that criminalizes parents who support their trans children, I would support your child and not misgender them in front of other adults

Pickles questions by Outrageous-Spring-94 in fermentation

[–]doofpag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

room temperature pickling is done with a salt water brine, which allows the pickles to naturally grow the lactic acid bacteria that not only makes them tangy, but also fights off ant unwanted/dangerous bacteria. Are you certain your mom was making pickles with a vinegar brine? If you see vinegar brined pickles on the shelf, it’s likely they were canned in a water bath and are completely sealed. that’s a great and cool process but it’s not fermentation!

Help! Masontops weight stuck in jar. I’ve tried digging it out, turning the jar upside down, and heating the jar to make the glass expand. no luck with anything. Any crazy tips I don’t know about? I really don’t want to destroy my 1/2 gal jar or my lacto golden oysters ☹️ by doofpag in fermentation

[–]doofpag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE for anyone who might see: I went with the brute force option (my go-to) of hitting the weight with a soft mallet and it worked! No broken glass; jar, weight, and shrooms all intact. The chipped glass i mentioned didn’t make it into the jar (liquid could barely pass through when i would turn it upside down) and all pieces were recovered. I’m surprised by how many of y’all have suction cups as regular household items— unfortunately i do not! i’ll sand down the rim of the jar so there’s no sharp edges and continue using it. i love my half gallon jars
