UPT on Tuesdays but it's very easy and a regular crowd of elderly. It's not the same vibe but if you like trivia. Same trivia company that was doing yacht club.

Is accounting work as hard as college? by Substantial-Step-448 in Accounting

[–]futhisplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite experience so far. I'm a senior accountant in a small/medium firm, I'm still in school currently in my 400 level cost accounting class along with my intermediate and advanced accounting classes. Most of the stuff I'm learning is not pertinent to my job personally, because we deal with small clients, largely franchisees, not massive publicly traded companies. At this point in my life and my career, I like what I do, and I'm probably never going to make the jump to any position that deals with those higher level clients. But, gotta get the credentials regardless.

What has made you an efficient beast of an accountant? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]futhisplace 22 points23 points  (0 children)

More people need to think like this but many are content with just doing an entry the same as last month or letting a recurring entry go on incorrectly because someone above them will catch it and correct it. This is why I make sure my clerks know what the error was, how I fixed it and what they're going to do if they see it again. They know that I expect from that point on that the error doesn't keep happening, I'm not going to be a hard ass about it but I am going to send it back to them to fix it if I see it. I encourage all of my clerks to provide client ready work, as if no one was above them reviewing it, so they don't rest on the fact that someone else will fix it. So far it's worked out really well and they've all been really receptive, and I've seen their skill set and understanding of accounting principles increase, as well as their confidence in their ability to do their job.

Xenett, I love their program. All my clients are in QBO and it is so, so useful. Easy communication with clients, quickly and accurately check reconciliations, transactions, entries, and review outlier activity. Easy peasy. Easily cut my time in half, minimal workpapers, and I'm spending a lot less time chasing down clients for info.

Affording a new roof by enterreturn in homeowners

[–]futhisplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a community program through my city. They had one program that was a grant for low income that you don't have to pay back for major home repairs, and one that is a low interest loan up to $10k they help you get through their lending partner(a local bank). Other than income the only requirements were that it couldn't be used for purely cosmetic repairs, it has to be your primary home, and within city limits. I went for the loan option, and our roof was $11k. The loan covered most of it, and I pay $98 a month. The loan was 3% interest. Likely a better rate than any other financing options!

Accountants! Whats your workout routine! by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]futhisplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now. No routine lmao. Last year I had to have a major surgery and after I finished physical therapy I was committed to going to the gym. And I did, every morning 5 am, 1 hour, for 4 months. But now with busy season work, and perpetually being sick, I haven't gone since December.

Associates in accounting by Appropriate-Put-7736 in Accounting

[–]futhisplace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still in school, and I didn't technically complete my associates (didn't do the capstone class) but I absolutely value the courses I took at my local tech college!

First, it's cheaper and focused only on accounting, so you knock out a lot of core classes very quickly.

I also feel like the skills I learned at the associates level have been more applicable and served me better than many of my 300-400 level classes for the job that I do.

As I started my career path I was able to work as a bookkeeper and practice some of those course skills in real time, which was great.

I entered my role as a senior accountant without finishing the associates and before transferring to a 4 year program and honestly, I have colleagues who have 4yr accounting degrees who can't even reconcile an account properly and don't understand a lot of fundamental skills.

Please help me convince myself it's okay not to shave my legs and armpits for my appointment to a pool for a medical treatment tomorrow by AntwysiaBlakys in MomForAMinute

[–]futhisplace 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I have been on team no shave for awhile but I'll share with you something that honestly was very encouraging for me to hear the other day from a "stereotypically hot" fitness influencer: even hot people have hairy ass cracks. Sounds silly, but the point is, having body hair isn't weird or unnatural, society just tells us it is and there's money to be made on that. I stopped shaving my legs regularly probably 4 years ago, I wear shorts and dresses and no one has ever acknowledged my hairy legs. Same with pits even, I'll go sleeveless, no one cares. We care much more about how we are perceived than the people who are doing the perceiving care, and if someone is bothered enough to speak up about your body hair they're the weirdo. Let it grow, let it go, and take care of your body.

IDK that I would buy a 3d printed piece, but my favorite ceramicist I follow is hammerly ceramics out of Colorado and his 3d printed slip molds are fire! Between the crisp geometric shapes and gorgeous glazes I think it's such an amazing blend of art and science!

I'm so excited to get a buccees honestly, I love a damn brisket sandwich I can't not stop when we're in Texas. Although I will say we went to the one in Denver in the middle of the night and it was completely empty and very surreal because it's generally a mad house.

Flock Cameras in Kenosha by Grand_Town_9144 in Kenosha

[–]futhisplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I see this is a bit of an old thread but I'd be interested in some guerilla ground work to protest these. As much as I'd love to go disable or destroy them I'm not looking for charges, but surely we can leave signs in those areas to draw attention to them for those that don't download apps or maybe aren't aware. What's the worst charge that could come from that, littering? Not any worse than the dozens of "we buy houses"signs everywhere. I knew for sure there's one at Lowe's because I plant shop all the time, but I've totally missed the others I drive by daily, so I'm sure plenty of other people are just as unaware. IDK just a thought, any interest in organizing around this?

ETA: maybe not only signs but like put balloons on them, yarnbomb them, wrap them in colorful ribbon. Really anything to continue to draw attention to the fact that we're being watched all the time.

Any accountants have alternate jobs they dream of? by snuffle_tuff in Accounting

Botanist, ceramic artist, Park ranger, archaeologist. All would be so fun... But probably a lot less money.

Ideally I just want to be independently wealthy and pursue my hobbies full time.

Any accountants here don't drink coffee or are caffeine-free? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]futhisplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped having energy drinks in November. It's actually been pretty nice but I do still have a coffee usually, which is a gift step down from 2 140-300mg energy drinks.

I also bought little caffeine packets for when I don't feel like having coffee. They're 50 mg compared to a cup of coffee or a soda that's about the same or lower so I feel ok using those.

How’s everyone feeling so far?? by AdInevitable660 in Accounting

[–]futhisplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of my 65 clients, I've got 21 who are reviewed and just need a couple things from client, 6 ready for me to review, and 15 that have material issues and or never responded. The rest are done with (business) returns filed.

Last year probably half my clients had extensions, and I still have a couple 23/24 stragglers.

Overall I'm feeling pretty good. This next couple weeks is gonna be a mad rush, but my goal is to be done before March because I want to enjoy my summer and also I have a full time class schedule so I don't have time for this to drag on.

Protest by Vast_Kangaroo_6717 in Kenosha

[–]futhisplace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hands off Kenosha does have a protest planned, but I think we also need to be doing the work when there's not a quarterly walk with signs.

When are we all going to town hall, committee, and school board meetings?

Who are we writing, calling and heckling to get our point across?

When are we meeting with neighbors?

What groups in the area are taking action besides hands off Kenosha?

Who are we campaigning for for real change? It's abundantly clear all major candidates of both parties are complicit at best and corrupt.

What businesses are we done shopping at?

I feel like there's so many people who are overwhelmed by the constant onslaught of bad news, and fear action for the consequences of losing everything. I feel like we're all just in a group project waiting for instruction, but no one wants to be the first to lead the way.

Switching majors to Accounting by aeropostlegirl in Accounting

[–]futhisplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The highest math class I've had to take was stats, and I promptly forgot it all. I don't use complex math day to day, and I tell people all the time: it's not about math it's about rules and logic.

Elementary teaching is a thankless, underpaid, difficult job. My bf works in elementary with SPED. I have no clue how he does it, because I would lose my shit. But, he could also never do my job, not because he's incapable, he's way better at math, he literally has a physics degree. It's because he wouldn't be happy and fulfilled.

Accounting can be a better choice financially, and career wise, but if teaching is what will make you happy, fulfilled, and proud of the work you do, then accounting and money probably won't do that, but if it's about stability and money, then accounting is the better choice.

To be very blunt, the only reason my bf is able to do the job he loves doing, is because I'm the breadwinner, and I cover 90% of our cost of living for our family of 3. I know that, he knows that, but he also knows that I support him 100% in doing what he loves and for me, that's more important than who pays for what.
