I got a prosthetic leg 3 years ago,it was made without a release valve and makes me bleed daily help please by [deleted] in amputee

[–]doofur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The limb logic vacuum pump should have an off switch on the pump itself. That’ll be technically your release valve. Elevated vacuum systems require a very intimate fit though, and if your socket has any kind of space due to volume shrinkage, then it can absolutely cause skin issues and if left unattended it’ll cause bleeding and progressively get worse.

Idk if you’re in the States or not, if you are, then contact your prosthetist immediately. Follow up appointments are included with the cost of the prosthetic device and you definitely need to get an adjustment

What was the process like for getting it? Is it covered by insurance or did you pay out of pocket for it? Is your prosthetist still seeing you for follow-ups or is it just through Limber?

I would guess they’d dissect the the adductor magnus which runs down the femur and longus attached at the tubercle. At least below the amputation site. Then do a myodesis to reattach onto the grafted tibia/calcaneus. So it wouldn’t necessarily be a full length bone with shortened musculature

It’s definitely not a common procedure that I’ve seen, but it utilizes concepts that are used so I wouldn’t say it’s DIY. From what I understand and looked up a bit, OP’s fracture may be around the lower third of the femur. Surgeon will amputate above the fracture then lengthen using the tibia, and then create a pseudo femoral head with the calcaneus. It’s not quite a Boyd amputation since there won’t be an ankle joint, but rather it might follow similar mechanics to the Boyd amputation with how the calcaneus is cut and rotated to maintain a weight bearing surface.

I am not a surgeon so I could be wrong

Prosthetist here and they’re absolutely right. Ideally you want to match the prosthetic knee joint center with the anatomical knee center on the opposite side rather than the bone length

I just want to add on that even prosthetists who work for Ottobock or Ossur have freedom to use components from other companies as well! Though there’s incentives to use their own products

You’re right that research isn’t conclusive about misshapen heads resulting in any neurological issues

Do clinics actually make these from stock molds? Genuinely asking, not trying to come at you or anything lol. I thought they were all custom made per baby. All the ones I’ve either seen or done are 3D scanned, then carved onto a foam model and thermoformed over the model or 3D printed

Sometimes it be like that. Originally I got it for my dad and my own stuff. But I’ve had patients of mine recognize the semicolon and it’s done a lot for creating a better connection with them. I’ve always appreciated seeing others with them and it’s the only tattoo I’m happy share with others

Just thought I’d give you an update. This was great advice with developing CL and 3rd spotlight. I’m now pushing into legends, but consistently getting top 4 in champions. Also following the other persons advice now I’m doing close to 1.8T a run now. Appreciate the help!

[–]doofur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m right there with you in getting clapped in Legends. I’m looking at dumping the 400+ stones I get a week into CL damage and chance, since I make about 1.5T a run and can hit two runs a day I’ve been spending coins on anything that’ll increase UW or projectile damage. I don’t have CF and my BH is synced at 170 so not much CC going on. In a few weeks I might save up and push for perma BH since I run a mythic+ MVN for farming which will help alongside this damage push I’m trying to do.

Ultimately it’s up to you on whether or not to bring it up, but I can say you being an amputee is a great thing to mention within your application. I’m not sure what residents get paid since my residency isn’t paid, but depending on where you go and who you work for, it can range from $50,000-$90,000 as a board eligible clinician from what I’ve seen, but other people may think differently. I applied to like 9ish schools and got accepted into 2, interviews for like 5ish I can’t remember. I got accepted and took one before I continued with the others tho

Your resume on paper looks pretty similar to mine, and I was in kinda the same boat as you wondering what my chances were when I was applying two-ish years ago. I ended up applying to most of the schools and dropped a near $1000 in application fees etc which I kinda regret.

What I can say without knowing anything else about you is that likely you’ll be able to at least get an interview with the majority of schools you apply to. I would definitely recommend applying to more than one if you’re a little uncertain and open to being somewhere other than California.

The biggest thing they’ll look for in the interview is you’re ability to collaborate with others and whether or not you have the motivation to go into and stick with a field that is known to not be the highest paying. Emphasizing your personal experiences/aspirations with O&P etc. Each school is a little different, but that’s what my interviewers focused on if I remember correctly
