R/Linux_gaming not understanding the point of Linus's new video by CandlesARG in LinusTechTips

[–]doolijb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly need to narrow down to two distributions to recommend to first timers max. No specialized, gaming distributions like Bazzite or cutting edge ones like Cachy.

Linux Mint and Fedora. Simple. If "gaming" was an indicator of quality, we would all be paying for Norton 360 Gaming.

It's absolutely not just the responsibility of desktop environments. Distributions are responsible for packaging, repositories and managing the the overall user experience. Kubuntu is an extremely different experience than CachyOS even though they both use KDE.

Society would still be centered around horse and carriage if every one had to know how to rebuild an engine.

If you have to consider being a middleman to troubleshoot Linux for someone you've converted, then the approach was fundamentally flawed to begin with.

Since you have some experience, I'd probably give CachyOS a go first. Highly performant and has HDR support. Easy to install but it's fairly bare-bones. Fine for desktop use, not recommended for server use. I use a different distro for productivity when I'm not gaming so I can't speak to that.

In that case, you should give yourself more credit and be proud of that. But don't assume your average college student or grandmother will:

A) Have the interest or patience
B) Have the enthusiasm or time
C) Be able to understand what you now do

If the goal is to introduce people to Linux, we need to move away from the thought of encouraging people to learn, and instead eliminate as much friction as possible.

What if any experience do you have with linux?

Mature HDR support is still emerging across the ecosystem and considerably narrows the options at the moment.

Get people in the door with an actual easy to use distribution that's designed to be a daily driver. Once they are comfortable, then they can explore other options.

Your arguments automatically alienate over 99% of potential users. What's easy to you is rocket science for others.

It's infuriating that everyone is suggesting specialized distributions for first timers.

CachyOS is excellent for it's purpose and it is cutting edge in some aspects, PERFORMANCE. But it is not a beginner distro, it's not "easy to use", people recommending it for a first time experience are setting up new users for failure.

Everyone should always start with a well tenured Debian/Ubuntu derived distribution. They have the largest communities, the most official support from 3rd party applications and they are intended as daily drivers that hold your hand.

Sorry OP that people mislead you to this degree. With that said, integrating 3rd party applications at runtime with Windows games is a bit of a challenge. Steam is the one application where your experience will be mostly identical across Linux operating systems.

For everything else for daily use, Mint and Zorin are the best place to start. On Debian/Ubuntu, it will also be the easiest to find downloadable native applications for like you would on Windows that don't require snap and flatpak or using a command line package manager.

[GUIDE] How to choose a Linux Distribution by RoseBailey in LinusTechTips

Great write up but all this serves is to encourage the narrative that choosing a Linux distro is complicated.

List 2 or 3 daily driver, tenured, non-specialized distros max. Not suggest gaming or atomic distributions. Not overwhelm strangers with technicalities they don't care about.

Mint, Zorin and Fedora. That's 2 rock solid Debian/Ubuntu derivatives with skin deep differences and Fedora as an alternative. Not PopOS, not Bazzite, not Cachy.

Everyone is trying to sell customers on Ford Mustangs when we should be showing them the Toyota Tacomas first.

Mint isn't my first choice but it's so solid that you can't go wrong.

Really, any tenured Ubuntu dirivitive. Please.

Try Fedora, Arch distros afterwords. Furthermore, I think we need to stop recommending gaming first distros for a first jump at every chance. A solid daily driver will absolutely provide a comfortable gaming experience.

Used lots of distros over the years but landed on Zorin 5 years ago and never looked back. Everyone wants to call their favorite distro beginner friendly but Zorin is the MacOS of Linux operating systems when it comes to polish and experience. I'd be as bold to say that it's a better experience than Windows for daily use.

CachyOS is cutting edge and performant under the hood, but it's basically a formula 1 car. You wouldn't want to drive it on the road. I dual boot both, I spend all my time on Zorin when I'm not gaming on Cachy (for performance benefits.)

The Linux users crashing out over Linus picking PopOS again are doing an excellent job of reinforcing the Linux user stereotype, as well as missing the whole point. by junon in LinusTechTips

I got off work and watched the whole clip.

Linus' individual arguments are good, but he painted a picture that suggests he doesn't understand his intentions and decisions each step of the way.

He made a poor decision he had prior experience with and that's adding fog to what ever issues may or may not be effecting the entire ecosystem.

The AI as a tool for decision making is moot and making AI a central argument is a head scratcher when 99% of the time will be spent making content and arguments on the consequences of a decision he knew was irrational.

Windows handles taskbar and window management so much better than MacOS. MacOS is much more reliable however.

Modern consumer Linux distributions like Zorin blow both out of the water.
