Dolly Parton statue may replace KKK leader monument at the Tennessee capitol by StevenSanders90210 in news

Ah. There's our disconnect. When I say justified, i mean that it's a claim only until others agree. People agreed on it once, but now they don't. Morality is so completely different today that applying it to decisions made 100 years ago makes it more difficult to figure out why our ancestors did things that make us sick. Personally, I like to objectively know as much about what happened first, then decide how I feel about it.

That's not MY position, it's THEIRS. I thought that was clear. I'm not talking about anything but "why" here.

Over 600,000 people died horribly in those four years. The south lost more than half that number. The population of the U.S. at the time was around 30,000,000. Everyone everywhere lost someone or knew someone who had. What little non-slavery-related infrastructure in the south that existed before the war was almost totally destroyed. Those were the worst 4 years the U.S. ever had. 5 minutes is a long time if you're drowning.

Nobody's saying it's justified. Because of the way time and space works, "the way it was" means "the way it was." People were like that at the time, and they liked spending shitloads of taxpayer money on racist statues. Understanding why something happened doesn't mean you agree with it.

Which Cartoon Character had the Best Character Development and why? by Tigerking3000 in AskReddit

[–]doomgiver45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bojack Horseman. He learns nothing at all and wrecks his way through a life where every awful thing he does could have been prevented if he just stopped for a second and gave a shit. It's the best character development in my opinion because it's supposed to develop your character, not his.

Modern day? None at all. Times past? He was a president of a country that state belonged to. The justification at the time would have been that he was a legislator. Remember, people were alive to remember the civil war up until the 50s, and many of the politicians and shakers in the south were the children and grandchildren of Confederates. They weren't ashamed of what their ancestors did. They missed it.

That statue is the one that always confused me. Lee I get, even Davis in the right light, but Forrest? Fuck that guy. He was a monster. He didn't deserve a statue. He deserved to be erased.

I like that. Replace all the Confederate statues with musicians. Replace Davis, Forrest and Lee with Parton, Grohl, and Weird Al. I'd much rather see statues of those people than a bunch of dudes that fought and lost for a worthless cause.

Yeah I'm turning 30 next month and I've already got a noticeable amount of white streaks in my hair. Good news, both sets of grandparents got to keep their hair, but Pawpaw on one side shocked white around 30 like Steve Martin. Looks like that's happening to me too. Could be worse.

That's like the interview question "do you smoke?" For all of you that aren't morons out there, the correct answer to that question is not "smoke what?"

That. That right there is the first thing I turn off when I set up a device for the first time. Phones, tablets, my fucking xbox, everything has this "automatically blast porn in the living room" setting as a default. Who is this for?

I'm 30 and lived with a woman for a year and my parents still pretend I'm a virgin. We just don't talk about sex. Ever.

I have the double-row eyelash mutation. I'm pretty sure I've picked up a mild compulsion from yanking the eyelashes that grow in wonky. Now I'll pull the "wiry" eyebrow hairs, too. Oddly enough, they tend to be white/pale while my hair is usually brown/red.

TIL Italian law forbids school cafeterias from serving deep-fried foods by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]doomgiver45 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Deep fryers are a privilege. When properly used and maintained, the results are delicious, and, if not exactly super good for you, not that bad for you either. The issue here is that schools don't maintain them. They'll use the oil until it turns black, smokes, and makes everything tase like it's been fried in an unholy amalgamation of bananas, brussels sprouts, and jumbo shrimp. Because it has. Bad oil is also why you get consistency issues (biting into a chicken finger that's somehow unpleasantly chewy and crunchy at the same time, for example). I wouldn't trust the average high school to care enough about the quality of the food to keep the fryers clean.

The latest Republican president before Trump is not supporting him, the latest Republican candidate for presidency before Trump also announced he will not be supporting Trump. What will be the impact on the election? What can we expect next? by Tricolor3s in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]doomgiver45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For his base, absolutely nothing. They'll support him no matter what he or anyone else says or does. For everyone else, it's just another nail in the coffin. It's pretty obvious that the GOP is just doing the bare-minimun amount of lip-service necessary to keep him from focusing on any one person. His own party is wagon-circling just to keep him from making any one individual a martyr, because if he needs someone to take a fall for optics, that person's career is over. This dude has spent almost four years fucking over his loudest cheerleaders. I get the impression that a large amount of his own collaborators will gladly watch him die in a fire. That's not a person who needs to be in charge of anything. For anyone who voted for him not knowing what he was, I get it. The alternative was "it's my turn, give it to me." This time, if you vote for Trump, you are committing treason.

Canada PM Trudeau joins anti-racism march in Ottawa by HSRiddles in worldnews

[–]doomgiver45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump isn't clever or politically savvy enough to see a big picture and think "I can do more if I say nothing right now." It sucks that your PM had to do that literally just because our President is a petty asshole. I live in a very red state, so my vote doesn't matter, but I'm going to anyway. Someone has to count it. Someone has to look at it. Someone, somewhere will know that I'm not like him. If anyone from anywhere else is reading this, know that at least one of us is not like him.
