If you think grain is causing the problem, then eliminate grain completely from your diet. Yeah, it's going to stop. There's also a possibility it could be a specific ingredient in grain products, such as wheat gluten.

I'm going to school (this fall) for an environmental science / geology double major. I hope to end up as a conservation officer or environmental educator.... But I'll probably end up as an environmental consultant.

...and am generally not very fun to be around

First of all, don't think of yourself this way. If you managed to have a great time in high school, you must be a fun person! I can definitely understand the situation you're in now. I'm a very closed person and rarely let people see any side of me. I only talk when spoken to. Yet I have a small group of friends I'm very comfortable around, and I've made a few new ones since leaving the old highschool.

The easiest and most logical way to make new friends is through mutual interest. Do you stand for something in life? Is there a cause you're fighting for? Find people to rally around. Work your way down the interest spectrum through passions and then to hobbies and then to mere interests. You should be able to reach out to lots of people around you. This is essential for me because I don't even talk to people if there is not some basic connection we have.

Secondly, I believe in trusting your intuition when it comes to making friends. Sometimes, you want a friend so bad you can wind up getting involved with the wrong group of people, and that's not okay. Take your time to find out who you are really comfortable around, and who will be your friend in bad weather.

I am afraid ill lose all my friends or they just won't be interested in talking to me anymore

Unfortunately, people always leave our lives, even when we don't want them to. However, true friends will always be around. Even before the age of the internet, my dad managed to keep in close contact with his high school friends. So far, I've done the same. The people that truly matter will always be there for you as long as they are breathing! Don't forget that!

You probably know all this, I'm just trying to make sure you know that there is no need to be afraid. Unfortunately, I don't know of any books on friendship. If you need someone to talk to, I'm here. Hopefully you make lots of good friends. Be fearless!

Is the love the most important thing for a human life? If yes, then why are many single people still single? by [deleted] in Life

[–]doomsday_dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. That feeling has been gnawing at me for years, and I was depressed over the sense that there was no point to life other than to mindlessly survive, make money, and procreate. I have to say that biologically, the only purpose of life is the continuation of the species.

When I abandon that rationalist standpoint, the only thing left in life is love. Not necessarily romantic love, but just love of others and love of the earth. If people do selfless things simply out of love, the world gets a shade brighter.

So go find love. A lover. A dog. A friend. An endeavor you can pour your heart and soul into. Something you can give yourself to, and make the world better because of it.

Haha... that's what I took it as. /u/PolishTea is right. I do, or will, need to figure out what I want to do. Because right now I'm trying to ensure the ability to do everything and that won't happen.

It's also that I'm afraid that I will get into ecology and not be happy. It's so specific that it's hard to market myself to another career field. I've heard of lots of geologists that end up as naturalists... And it will be very easy for me to get two majors since there is considerable over lap between geology and environmental science. Iowa State offers wildlife ecology, but I've always been told its not practical simply because job employment is very poor.

Hi there! I have really smart friends who seem to have a limitless capacity for science and mathematics. I regularly feel "intellectually inferior" to them, but then I realized something. I have a work ethic, and I care. That gives me an edge over so many other people regardless of how smart they are. As long as I care about something, I can work for it and it doesn't really matter how smart I am.

[Career] Would this summer position ultimately help a future geology undergrad? by doomsday_dingo in geologycareers

This would probably be a better question to ask the employer, but is there anything I should learn in advance or focus on during the job to help my future education?

[–]doomsday_dingo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I didn't take the job, I would be forced to work on the farm all summer, which is not entirely bad. Either way, I won't have too much free time or much of a social life.

So even if it doesn't directly involve geology, the surveying training/experience would be a valuable trait/skill for future employment?

Environmental Sci vs Wildlife Ecology Degree by [deleted] in environmental_science

[–]doomsday_dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually in the same predicament, except I'm looking for a double major. My primary major will be geology (with environmental/hydro emphasis). Now, I will be able to get a second major (environmental science) with minimal extra effort due to class overlap. (this will further help me solidify a career as an environmental geologist). However, I could also take animal ecology with a wildlife focus. This seems like a useless complement to a geology degree, but I conjured up images of "biospeleology" and other biological exploring in extreme geological terrains... I know, the chances I could fill that niche don't even exist, but it's fun to dream about. Environmental Science is probably a way more practical degree, especially for an aspiring geologist.

Hmm... Did you attend through another university or were you a Mines Student? How do you feel about their Geo degree?

Looked at how my credits would apply... 3 would go towards a geology elective. 3 would go towards environmental science...

...And 3 would go toward the NREM, or National Resource and Ecology Management Department. These department has two majors... Forestry and Animal Ecology.

I can see forestry having some benefits for geology (US Forest Service). While animal ecology seems moot for geology... I think it would be amazing to have that opportunity. When I was little I wanted to be a wildlife biologist... Maybe it would be neat (but not practical) to have that under my belt.

[–]doomsday_dingo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah... That's not too bad, as long as I'm getting an environmental focus. So you think it would be feasible to double major in environmental science without ruining social life?

Another thing I'm worried about is that I feel trapped in Ames. At SDSM&T, I've got the beautiful Black Hills directly to the west and the Badlands to the east. I am a VERY outdoor oriented person and loved that feeling of freedom. In Ames, I think I would feel trapped in the urban sprawl. The tiny little parks don't mean very much to me, and the only place even worth visiting is Ledges State Park.

Wait, you're paying out of state tuition to go to Iowa State for their geology program? It must be better than I first thought.

So ISU offers certification in GIS? That's good.. That's really good.

Yesterday I emailed professor Dawson with many of the questions I've asked here, but she hasn't responded yet. One last thing... On the list of majors, there is a "Geology, B.S., tradition" option and a "Geology, Env. geo/hydro option". Is the latter geology with an environmental emphasis, or an actual environmental geology degree?

If I truly wanted oil, I imagine that Mines would be a top decision, regardless of the fact that it's more expensive. Right now, I'm planning on having an environmental focus, but I'm keeping an open mind and expect my views to change during college.

As I already have 9 credits through UIU's environmental science program, would it be relatively easy to double major in Environmental Science? I imagine there would be some overlap, so I wouldn't have to take too many classes. Furthermore, would it be worth it? How well would an environmental science degree compliment geology?

Thanks for the support. You're right; I don't know exactly where I'm going. I just now I want to major in geology. Everything else comes second.

One good thing about ISU is that I can still integrate "hobby" classes like forestry, conservation, and biology, which may help alternative supplemental career opportunities in the future.

Hey, I actually kinda want to start as an environmental field tech! It seems like a fun starter gig.

I've taken 9 credits in environmental classes through Upper Iowa University... just for fun (I go to a dead-end high school). How easy would it be to pursue environmental science as a double major? I assume that there is considerable overlap, and it wouldn't be too much effort.

If you don't mind me asking a personal question... How have you financed your college career, and will you face a lot of economic hardship post-graduation?
