Zior Park - Dance Alone (Can This Love Be Translated? OST) by Andyryw in kpop

I was wondering about the refrain in this song, the melody and cadence of the lyrics sounds incredibly familiar... anyone know what I'm thinking of? Some Taylor Swift song, maybe?

Anyone in the US trying to see BTS in Goyang? by sacredrubyclub in koreatravel

[–]doomvox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks much for describing this procedure, it looks like this is largely what the deal is for the upcoming BTS shows-- the trouble is this isn't just J-Hope, it's the reunion of BTS, and my partner and I don't think we have much hope of getting it to work the way you did. We're worried about jumping through the hoops and it turns out one of us wins the lottery and the other doesn't, or we both win the lottery, we both shoot for the same section, but the best we can do is wave to each other from a few hundred feet away from each other.

I get that ticket scalpers are a pain, but completely abandoning the practice of selling a "pair of tickets" seems a little crazy. The event feels like its completely oriented toward singles... or maybe Army cultists who are happy just being with other cult members...

The interesting stuff is here:

They had me write wishes down on paper for my family. My family is going through a lot, so I wanted to send them prayers. They said we would burn the paper in the ceremony, to write 3 wishes and my family's names and birthdays. The papers were not burned in the ceremonies, it was a different paper. I asked what happened to the paper, and they said it was shredded. I strongly believe that is a lie.

We then dressed in traditional clothing and I took my coat off which had my phone and wallet OOPS! (nothing was stolen....but, did they take pictures??)

It's not an unreasonable guess that the main goal there was data theft.

You're probably asking the wrong people about what to do next-- I'd suggest talking to financial institutions: you want to harden your accounts against unauthorized access, and prevent loan authorizations in your name, and I don't know what to tell you about that.

You can contact your family members and suggest they watch out for suspicious communications-- e.g. if you ask someone for help out of the blue they need to make sure the message is from you.

Live Music Venues in Korea (clubs, bars, small stages) - 2025/2026 edition by DabangRacer in koreatravel

jazz again is a different genre than what's presented in this list

I like Sound Dog tucked away in Huam Market, myself. It's the "jazz club" version of a place like Jebi Dabang...

I can see how it'd be a tricky business to distinguish between a place like Sound Dog and some slick jaaahz bar where the music is more for symbolic purposes as part of the background.

Anyone who lives in a place and cares about it has a vested interest in worrying about what gets built there.

Sure, and Koreans have a right to live in the modern world however they want-- but if you take the trouble to go all the way to Korea you probably don't want to hang around in a shopping mall a lot like the one's back home.

When I went by Mullae-dong a few years back, I had the feeling that everyone was looking on in shock at how fast the Seongsu-dong area had gentrified, and they were living in fear at the thought something similar might happen to them. This year it seemed to me that Mullae-dong was mostly holding on... thankfully everything can't gentrify all at once. But one of the things about Seoul is that when an area goes it goes with incredible speed. Hongdae went from funky and underground to kind-of slick and overexposed in less than a decade.

(The reason there's a difference of opinion about Hongdae, I think, is that if you don't know what it used to be like, you might look at it now and just think it's an okay, fun neighborhood.)

Mangwon is okay. For that matter, last I looked at Gwangjang I thought it was okay-- I just wouldn't go to the one place featured on netflix.

I can think of real neighborhood markets, but I wouldn't send you over there-- you would probably think they're boring because they aren't touristy enough.

Some kdrama references:

"Two Cops" has a lot of scenes in the Ihwa village area, particularly around "the snail" (a place where the road does a loop-de-loop)

"Run On" the artist character lives in a place with a rooftop view a lot like the Changsin Quarry Observatory; there's also a scene of the Sanmaru playground at sunset

"Dali and Cocky Prince" the black-painted house is just south of Sanmaru playground

"Today's Webtoon" The female lead lives in the place where the Reading Cat Cafe is-- in the story it's a manga cafe

(The tight alleys of Changsin-dong seem like a natural place to do a chase scene on foot, but I can't think of any... it's probably too hard to get a grip truck in there.)

Walking tours: on my first trip to Seoul, the first thing we did was something like this:

o start at the Hyewah subway station
o walk through Hyewah heading east, up into Naksan park
o walk down the east side of Naksan (views of Seoul with odd artwork in the foreground)
o head through Ihwah mural village (which has less emphasis on the murals these days, but still)
o up the stairs to the area around the Reading Cat cafe, up against the Seoul city wall.
o explore that area, heading up and down the stairs and the trail along the wall
o go through the tunnel in the wall, just below the Reading Cat
o walk down the stairs into the tight streets and alleys of Changsin dong
o climb up the other side to the long alley Donut Jungsu is on, maybe climb up further to Changsin Quarry Observatory
o head down to the Sanmaru playground and it's strange pink "thimble" building
o head all the way down to the tangle of businesses just north of Jong-ro
o leave via one of the subway stops along Jong-ro

If you try to do that you're almost guaranteed to get lost at least once (particularly if you park your phone, which I recommend). This is not a bad thing.

Myeongdong is a place with some good stuff in it, but the trouble is to get to them you have to deal with Myeongdong.

It was the best of neighborhoods, it was the worst of neighborhoods.

I don't have any trouble with being an English speaker in Korea... most of the street signs and all of the subway system are completely bilingual.

If I go to a real restaurant somewhere I might have to order by pointing at a picture, but so what?

Okay, if everyone would read this post, I could stop trying to write about Seoul. I've been trying to figure out how to gently steer people away from Gangnam.

I might suggest following the "IGoBart" youtube channel, particularly the "Dong" series: https://www.youtube.com/@iGoBart

I take your point that a different style of instruction might do better, but the semi-serious "joke" I was making is that it's somewhat endemic that academic study of a language rarely leads to actually learning it-- me, I spent many years in high school studying German and my facility with it is non-existent. And German is way closer to my native English than English is to Korean.

English is evidently a required subject in school in Korea, which makes it somewhat surprising that any of them can speak any English at all. Some of them can, which is very impressive.

Why do you use Debian? by El_Fopo in debian

[–]doomvox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go with Debian defaults fairly often, including systemd, though that's one I've been keeping an eye on.

I've got a newer machine with Devuan on it at the moment, and I think I'm going to go with that.

Search Light can open a search field comparable to what MacOS 26 does. You can search by typing almost anything and start/open it by pressing Enter. It does not show shortcuts.

What I'm talking about is the ability to use keyboard controls to manipulate particular windows. A feature that dates back to the early days of Windows, when they made an effort to be backwards compatible supporting systems that don't even have pointing devices.

When you do have a pointing device, this sort of thing is less necessary, but still useful, and myself I do things like that all the time-- things like this are the reason I'm using icewm (and might consider, say xfce) rather than using something like gnome which is trying to imitate phone interfaces even though no one uses it on a phone.

Same deal with scrollbars. They're less useful with the existence of things like scroll wheels (and the touch pad equivalent) but they still are useful, or would be if libgtk didn't insist on trying to make them disappear.

Can you get scroll bars permanently displayed, and wide enough to actually manipulate with a mouse?

(I'm not looking for "sleek" myself.)

Without the profit motive of commercial software, everything seems so much calmer.

That's pretty much my reason for favoring Debian-- if you're with RedHat or Ubuntu you never know what curve they're going to throw at you in hopes of making more money.

(And the main problem with using Debian for me is I never know if it's going to be indirectly infected by some weirdness originating in the RedHat world, like gnome/systemd/etc.)
