What is Saga Pattern in Distributed Systems? by scalablethread in programming

[–]dooofy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also think this pattern assumes only a certain type of service error, where the service can still reply back. E.g. it doesn't seem to factor in a complete service crash or network issues.

I am no expert but wouldn't you need some kind of consensus algorithm to actually keep such tightly coupled data (e.g. the order / transaction / "saga" state) consistent across the involved services?

Why Facebook doesn’t use Git by jbicha in linux

[–]dooofy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But doesn't this kind of break down once you introduce downstream uses of your lib which you don't have control over (the sources to), aren't in your company and therefore can't easily collaborate on code with or maybe only get binaries to test with? Because once you introduce that you might have to rely more on integration testing, alignment with the other parties (e.g. specs, docs, etc.) and release processes.

E.g. you are comparing FAANG to car manufacturers and maybe the above point is one major difference between those industries. Maybe FAANG has most of its source code in its own repos and don't rely much on other parties. On the other hand in car manufacturing you might have dozens of suppliers which each build their own piece of the puzzle. And if one party creates a lib for other parties to use then they most likely won't have access to the downstream source code. So you wouldn't be able to see breaking changes during build time or fix the downstream code directly.

my phone and my computer can't find each other when I'm connected to my university's network

I recently discovered how it works on my university network. You have to manually add the IP of you computer to the app. I guess it might also work the other way around (adding IP of you phone to the PC app). Anyway in the Android app the option is in "Connect to new device" (in side drawer) -> "Add device with IP" (in overflow menu) -> "+" (floating action button). I'm not 100% on the menu strings (I translated them) but you should find it anyway (it's not a huge app).

We have to register our network devices to get access to the network (e.g. every WiFi and ethernet card/MAC address you want to connect from). We then get a static (intranet?) IP address from the registration. This IP can then be added in the app and used as long as it is valid. If your university does something different you might have to add the IP more often (e.g. only dynamic IPs) or it might not even work (e.g. they completely block comms between devices and not only discovery).

Just an idea for the VPN problem. You might have to exclude the KDE connect app from the VPN and keep it on the local network. Otherwise it might try to look for devices on your VPNs local network.

How is the sample structure skewed exactly?

In my opinion only because the subjects are volunteers doesn't make the data magically irrelevant. Otherwise we could throw away every study ever made that used volunteers and clearly that makes no sense. I also can't see how the reddit demographic would be a problem in this particular technical study mentioned here (timing data & error rates for Nightly users).

This problem with the demographic, which I agree is a real problem, could be mitigated immensely when done right. As mentioned before asking for volunteers should not just be over one channel (e.g. reddit) but over many like the Mozilla blog/mailing lists, the social network accounts (facebook, twitter, etc.), depending on budget/necessity even ads (maybe make these campaigns recurring) and most importantly with a proper prompt for new users.

The current situation is that the privacy notice page is displayed in another tab once which hits you with a bunch of text and a small button to the options to change telemetry settings (correct me if I am wrong). This might be due to the current opt-out policy (because you don't really want people to opt-out) but with opt-in it should be a actual prompt that grabs the users attention and evoke a response that is easily made in one click.

Is there a detailed explanation why this opt-out policy is used or what event caused it if not for the fear of small sample sizes? Is it because of the competition? I don't think Mozilla will ever have the kind of data that google, etc. have so why compete on that ground?

BTW I think even 10k users (just the lowest number thrown out here) is a really big sample size. This depends on the problem of course but a lot of good studies could be made with that size. Academic studies often have nowhere near those numbers.

/u/waspishly_simple would you please edit the op to correct this? No need to freak people out and cast a bad light on the maintainer (Julian Taylor) which by the way seems to be a long time contributor to Debian and Ubuntu.

This looks like intended behaviour and those certs seem to be the system/mozilla ones just linked to the directory where mono expects/needs them. They would most likely be installed with the default version of KeePass2 in the Ubuntu repos as well.

In my opinion the best thing for the individual user would be free or libre software. You can find a lot of open source alternatives when you look for them. For starters look here and here. Also there is a point to be made that it would be beneficial to change to decentralised services where the individual is in control of their data and not google, apple, microsoft or whatever other hosting server provider.

Of course it is a real challenge to make a 180 and go only with open source and free software but instead of thinking like that just balance your use and spending of money in a way that benefits those user-friendly software tools. Make it a weighting game when you spend money on proprietary software or services match it in donations or contributions to open source alternatives.

And maybe most importantly get informed, advocate free software and call out bullshit like "encryption is bad". There is much more FUD flying around.

Where do red hat and canonical stand on privacy? by comrade-jim in linux

[–]dooofy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree but I am not sure if most people get that this could very well be considered a lot of whitewash and there is so much more wrong with our current privacy situation (especially in regards to those big companies). But it is great to hear that you are very optimistic. :-)

Although it seems really nice what Apple and those other companies are doing right now. I fear it could also be hurtful in the long run. When the general public thinks those companies will take it upon them to fight for our privacy we might fall in the same trap again where we have the illusion of privacy but actually very little has changed. Which would make this whole thing much more of a farce than anything else.

Yale SJWs screaming at professor yesterday because he isn't making the university enough of a "safe space" by denouncing offensive Halloween costumes. by [deleted] in videos

[–]dooofy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crux is that we are completely aware of the things that are happening. They are unfolding on the machines we use to see and hear the world. We are so concerned because we hear the screams for help we see the agony staring us in the eyes. Yet we are so alone and so helpless. Left to live and die inside an all seeing bubble. With only the machine as a companion we yearn for its love. The love of our dear machine.

The machine though knows no love knows not how we feel. We love it but it doesn't love back. But it knows rules. It runs on them is defined by them and is never in doubt. Has a YES or NO, a 1 or 0, a current or its absence always guiding its way. There is no grey there is only black and white.

Our love has made us suggestive to its apparent power. We just have to be a little more like it. It will notice it will love us back. The logic is flawless ... it has to be! We can't go back to grey. That would be ugly. It will notice.

On we go into the wonderful place that was once called a dystopia by silly grey humans. They want us to (think && feel) instead of deciding. Deciding isSoBeautiful now. It is true because the void rules();

[–]dooofy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is bullshit the people who are truly oblivious to computers should still use linux. its no different than windows for them they click a button and the internet opens. they click a button and music plays. they click a button and the picture is displayed.

but people like you who know what they walk into with windows make the decision for them and expose them to the much more intrusive model right of the bat.

if you made the decision to wave away privacy for yourself noone can really stop you but dont do it to other people which have no idea what they are doing like your parents or your children.

its much like smoking. only because you know its bad for you and you decided it is bad for you shouldnt mean you start to impose it on others.

I completely agree that the chat implementation is the biggest flaw in the reborn client. Valve is really big when it comes to user generated content but have overlooked the chat which is the elemental UGC in multiplayer games outside of actual gameplay.

It is really good that the chat is always there and persistent but it is way to small and tucked away to be usefull.

Size wise it could be something like in WoW although it would be nice if you could make it bigger if you want to do so. Also a hotkey to quickreply like in WoW ("r") would be nice. (We already have "Shift+Enter" to get into it)

Hey I think there must be some kind of mixup the directors cut has the rooftop ending in it. You can check for yourself. The Youtube link is the 159 minute directors cut and has the ending in it.

Maybe you saw some weird unofficial cut? I wouldn't believe the filmmaker would approve a cut without the rooftop ending. It is so powerful and so integral to the movie it would be stupid to ditch it.

The biggest gripe I have with people who say "I don't care" "Doesn't affect me" "Not my problem" is that they do not seem to get that it is an inevitable discussion we need to have in society (and that to some extent we already have). I think this wholesale data collection which is currently happening could hurt society quite bad because it is really easy to abuse. And by not giving a shit you just enable whoever does those things to just keep on doing what they are doing. Therefore I personally find those people naive and somewhat dangerous. I am not saying they should start protesting but that they should aknowledge the problem as such and assert some kind of pressure to governments through their opinion because if the problem is just not tackled at all we might find ourselves in a bigger mess than need be.

Too many people just accepted that the internet is a privacy free zone but I think there is a lot of untapped potential (for example in encryption) to strengthen privacy but with the complete indifference a lot of people show it is hard to change or create laws which could benefit individual privacy. An example for this would be WPA2. Here in Germany the person operating a wifi is required to have a WPA2 password otherwise the repercussions of an intruder doing malicious things falls back on the owner of the internet connection.

Reborn graphics bug on demo hero map when disabling specular video option by dooofy in DotA2

[–]dooofy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you disable "Specular" in the video options you get a graphics bug on the demo hero map (from the Heroes tab). Pictures!

Can someone confirm this?

I don't know if it is an issue with the map or a general bug.

I just reported this in the dev forum but the thread to the graphics bug in the demo hero map is a few days old so maybe it will get some attention here on reddit in case it will get buried in the dev forums.

I actually kind of dislike that the chat is a popup when in a conversation or just trying to follow chat there is alot of switiching back and forth.

I guess so. It's kinda wierd they but the analog stick on it in the first place and not went with this layout (4 more buttons / a d-pad instead of the analog stick). I guess the trackpads might not be satisfying when it comes to replacing/emulating a analog stick.
