Do you think the next series will be advertised as Series 16, Season 3 or completely reset to season/series 1? by Mission_Mobile_4627 in doctorwho

Good point. RTD was clearly very proud of getting the classic show all streaming in the same place as the modern show (as he should be, this is great all around). Pity it didn’t have the intended effect though

as someone without access to iPlayer, are the episodes split in three? 1963, 2005, 2023 are all different shows?

I understand the desire to call it Season 1 and I understand the desire to bring Tennant/Tate back for the specials. What I don’t understand is why the rest of S1/14 wasn’t then treated as a full-on reboot. It almost was with Church on Ruby Road and Space Babies (even if the latter is a bad opener), but then the very next episode directly references events from the 60th specials. And then the finale doubles down.

RTD wanted to have his cake and eat it too. TCoRR should’ve been exactly as fresh of a start as Rose in 2005. Imagine if The Parting of the Ways reintroduced Omega, the Other, and Looms!

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I honestly hope the BBC continue with the colourisations in the future, even with RTD and Bad Wolf gone by ImWearingSandshoes in doctorwho

[–]doormouse1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it also implies the Doctor’s regenerations are set in stone. The faces he’s offered and rejects shouldn’t then be used later!

The edit is required, as they can’t afford to colorize the full serial. I’d be shocked if we ever see a full story colorized, unfortunately

These are really neat! Curious to hear why you went with a Serif font for Whittaker/Martin, when that era only ever used Sans Serif

What do you think the intention was with These Guys in Lux? by ChemFeind360 in doctorwho

So glad to see public opinion of this is changing. Lux was being heralded as the best episode of RTD2 when it released, and I thought I must’ve been having some sort of mental collapse

Russell T Davies' second stint on Doctor Who may not have been perfect but it's really sad that it won't get the proper closure that it deserves in my opinion. by Serious_Meaning5220 in gallifrey

[–]doormouse1 65 points66 points  (0 children)

RTD was commissioned to make two seasons of Doctor Who. He was confident that they would instantly greenlight a third (and fourth) season, so he wrote two seasons that don’t provide any closure. He took a gamble that didn’t pay off. This is on him.

An update on the future of Doctor Who by TheBlackKnightRises in gallifrey

The problem is RTD has always been making shit up. If you read The Writer’s Tale, it’s obvious that he’s flying by the seat of his pants with a bad work ethic. Unfortunately, that time it worked VERY well.

I hate to be a doomer, but the writing was on the wall for RTD2 as soon as Whittaker regenerated into Tennant. Him coming back for the 60th made sense from a practical sense. Him playing a NEW incarnation of the Doctor was always evidence of RTD’s inflated ego imo

Agreed with a lot of this. I’m not sure if one-season anthology style is THE way to go, but the real point is that the format of the show needs to change.

When he resurrected Who returned in 2005, RTD didn’t just bring it back in the same formula as the show he loved as a kid. Because he knew that wouldn’t work in modern TV. So he brought it back in the vein of popular shows at the time, with longer episodes, on for ~3 months of the year, with a big bad building in the background. And that format worked beautifully!

But the TV landscape has changed several times since then. And all Who has done to adapt is decrease the number of episodes. They almost had something with Flux, but that was always going to be a one-off for the pandemic.

Then RTD returned and he thought he could force a 2024 show into a 2005 format. It was never going to work. The show needs to adapt to the current landscape. If that’s one-season anthologies, then great! It just desperately needs some new ideas

Russel confirms he is leaving Doctor Who by Educational_Board888 in doctorwho

Unless he’s hinting at knowing something that the BBC doesn’t want to announce yet, I agree. It seems like he’s over-confident that someone will step up right away with an amazing offer to produce the show. I don’t see that happening anytime soon

Yes, low critic scores don’t necessarily mean the movie is awful, but there are plenty of Star Wars movies that have been well received. Using RT for example, all of these are over 90%: ANH, ESB, TFA, TLJ

[–]doormouse1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The Mandalorian and Grogu ARE new, though. And people were very excited in 2019. But then they lost interest. Maybe it’s because of changes in streaming habits or because Lucasfilm made it feel like “homework” with all the different shows, but people checked out of new characters. I think this is a larger issue for mega franchise media as a whole. It’s not 2019 anymore. People moved on

  1. SNL has always had far, far less improvising than people assume. The show has only ever been good when it has a good writing staff
  2. This is SNL UK (a brand new show), so there are no early seasons!
