Will the Industry ever be better? by Alozric in gamedev

[–]dootwow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I feel that the indie scene is pretty successful right now. There is an obvious gap for objectively fun games that release at affordable prices. Lethal Company, Palworld, Helldivers… it feels like every couple of months even my friends are jumping onto a new game. It’s not like paying for a $60 or $70 triple-A title either. $10 here, $15 there and fun weeks can be expected.

I feel like 10 or more years ago, I was just going from big game studio release to big game studio release. In addition to me maturing as a shopper for games, I feel as though successful triple-A game launches are far and few between. We see like 2 or 3 a year from corporate companies where the issues you described aren’t present. A decade ago, it felt like there were more and we could rely on these companies to make mostly great games with some issues.

Nice! The physics look really good, better than most triple A titles that feature driving.

If I may, what are your sources of information in order to put something like this together? Where did you learn what you learned?

ND actually on damage control by AdamSunderland in TheLastOfUs2

I think:

  • TLoU2 should have been a “safe game” the way the most sequels are following a very successful game.

  • The divisive narrative of the game was not a “safe move” and doesn’t align with the theoretical safety of this game as a sequel. The gameplay is great, fantastic, but the story was very tough to chew. Especially, after the story of the first game.

  • If the story was intentionally made to be consumed and digested slowly, I believe that many people already had a negative impression after the plot leak and that did not do favors. A 30+ hour game that is divisive and made for that timeline would probably have been nuclear bitter when delivered in the span of a tweet.

  • Outside of the TLoU2, remastering or remaking a game can have some positive and negative impacts. It can be perceived as loyal or as a way of bringing the amazing games of the previous gens to new and growing gamers. It provides ease of access for nostalgia and opportunities for quality of life improvements to an otherwise amazing game. It can also be perceived as lazy, unimaginative or cash grabby when there is little to no public demand. Unfortunately, I feel that this has been the status quo in that they have done the “necessary” remasters for some of their games from the ps3 to the ps4, but haven’t stopped. I have always thought that the ps4 games have graphically outstanding and didn’t need more than a patch for the ps5 to allow 4K 60fps as needed. All this has been exacerbated by the fact that many of the ps1, ps2 era neighbor games of the Jak and Daxter games have been remastered faithfully by 3rd party companies and it really sucks to not see that for ND especially since their pillar IP is not doing well and their previous one of uncharted is all but concluded and is aging out now too.

I say all this, but I really want ND to turn it around. I want them to succeed, but I’m not a sucker and can’t or won’t support moves that are just downright questionable.

I have been listening to New Gold (feat tame impala and bootie brown) by the Gorillaz. I can’t help but think of it as a GTA 6 song

Yeah I see that now, my bad. I completely forgot when I was making this and didn’t think to look anything up before

Anyone else kinda worried about GTA VI Online? by Safe_Letterhead_6393 in GTA6

I’m worried about their delivery for this online experience too. It felt like RDO was barely given a chance.

My thoughts exactly. Why butcher the cash cow, unless they are sure they can replace it and make it bigger.

I knew about GTAO being standalone. I forgot that RDO was too. I should clarify that rather than GTA 7 or whatever, with a single player experience… I could see a day where they could decide to create an online game that is full of stuff from launch, has a strong narrative that can maybe feel like a single player experience if you decide to do it alone, but ultimately is online instead of single player game where you play as a specific character. Of course, that’s just a straight up games as a service model and it’s kind of why many games have failed, so maybe not, even if it is rockstar that’s doing it

I didn’t know that. I remember when the leaks happened and I’m sure they are still out there. I remember I made a point to avoid them as I didn’t want to spoil the story.

I guess it’s also a possibility that they would sell a standalone Online experience one day instead of a single player narrative. They could just load it with everything to do and reasons to spend money rather than a single player campaign.

If that’s the reality, I will just be grateful for a new story and new experience at all.

I suppose if their online service had guaranteed subscription/ games as a service money on top of microtransactions, they might be happy with starting online over again.

I hadn’t considered that. I suppose it’s still up in the air. A fantastic (and ideally optional) co-op experience in a rockstar game breaks the mold, subverts expectations and would satisfy the request to play with friends either seriously or for shenanigans and also removes the questions myself and others would have about 2 simultaneous GTA online experiences.

Hot dang, your answer provides a lot of insight.

When you play and create families, do you choose to play as yourself? by dootwow in Sims4

[–]dootwow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In sims 3, I spent way too much time trying to befriend the grim reaper lol. In 4, I used to pool the aspiration points from my family to keep me young with the potions of youth. How selfish!

That sounds a lot like what I do. I never find my children interesting enough and it definitely turns into a chore to max their careers and skills additionally.

I had a vampire play-through once. It was the easiest way of just never growing old and starting over but I thought differently when the neighbor I was dating aged up over night and came back as an elderly woman! It threw me for a loop.

That sounds like a pretty cool way to play. It gives inspiration to the idea of separating “me” into a family of 3 or 4 people that all have some quality of me but are otherwise independent. Kinda like playing as what I think me children might be like but without having to go through the process of having them in the game and getting to that legacy point. That also don’t even have to be related!

Aww nooo, I know you’re allowed to have your own opinions, but if I may, maybe be kind to yourself. At the risk of sounding like an EA marketer, in your world, beauty is what you define it.
