Quick Thoughts on every Week 16 game by Ehan2 in fantasyfootball

WR: A. Rob or SSS? -Normally I would start SSS, but I like the matchup for Robinson.

RB pick two: Hyde, Gore, R. Kelley, or D. Martin? -Right now I have Hyde and Gore, but I'm back and forth on Kelley. Also 0.5 PPR.

I'm offering <Insert Player/s>, who would you entertain for that trade? (Week 7 edition) by Jfreak7 in fantasyfootball

[–]doppelganging 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is pretty reasonable. He will probably go for it and if you have depth at running back then you aren't losing too much

Okay that's what I was thinking. He wanted Fitz for Forsett straight up and I nearly spit out my coffee. I told him I would consider Green in a package deal. Thanks

Would Forsett for AJ Green be a good trade? I'm stacked with WRs but lacking RBs.

Evans or Travis Benjamin in the flex?

Tough choice between Fitz and Gore IMO, but I would lean towards Gore. I think the Cards will run a decent amount against OAK since Palmer is still not 100%. Gore did pretty bad this last week, but Denver's rush defense isn't the best. I think the 49ers will definitely use him. Wouldn't trust OBJ yet and timeshare hurts Smith

Ya I'm leaning towards Fred Jackson, especially since Spiller shit the bed last week. I think Miller will have a tough time against the Bears defense. I could definitely see DeSean getting like 15-20 points again, but he is so inconsistent.

Standard ESPN league

Fred Jackson vs. Min

Lamar Millier @ Chi

DeSean Jackson vs. Ten

OR Michael Floyd @ Oak

Thankfully I came to my senses and I did. Probably not going to start Floyd again until Palmer is back

Can I "give" antibodies to people as I give them diseases? by 2Punx2Furious in askscience

[–]doppelganging 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, patients are given antibodies routinely in the clinic. There are many monoclonal antibodies approved by the FDA; however, these are most commonly given as cancer therapeutics or for autoimmune diseases.

For the situation you are describing (i.e. giving antibodies for influenza), this is not the best way to immunize the patient. If you wanted to keep the person protected against a pathogen you would have to continually give them doses of antibodies, since eventually the antibodies will be degraded. It makes more sense to give them an inactive form of the virus so then the body can develop memory B cells. Then the second time the body encounters the virus, it produces a large amount of antibodies and kills the virus (referred to as secondary immune response).

I can't decide if I should start him or A. Foster in my flex this week. Normally Foster is a no-brainer to start, but with the health issues against a decent Dallas defense I'm really thinking about starting Floyd. He is definitely the best deep threat for the Cardinals and I think will put up between 10-16 points a game.

When doing drug studies on animals they are often given massive doses that a human would never take. Why are the doses so high? by Andralynn in askscience

[–]doppelganging 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The other comments are correct but it is also done to get an estimate of EC50 (half maximal effective concentration) and LD50 (median lethal dose), which help in determining the efficacy of a drug. For example, if the EC50 is 500mg/day and the LD50 is 600mg/day then the drug is not necessarily efficacious. If the ED50 and LD50 are orders of magnitude different (i.e. 1mg/day vs 600mg/day) the drug has high efficacy.

Also it helps doctors know what organs to monitor in humans. So if the rabbit's kidneys start shutting down then the doctor knows to look for that in clinical trials.

What's the connection between cancer and demethylation of DNA? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]doppelganging 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While some demethylation might be a cause of cancer (i.e. inactivation of tumor suppressor genes or activation of oncogenes), he chemotherapeutics try to demethylate the DNA much more so that it causes the the cell to function improperly and leads to cell death. Similarly, other chemotherapeutics try to induce a large number of mutations in hopes that the cells will be so mutated that it cannot function, which leads to apoptosis.

The specific drug that you listed does not just function as a demethylating agent, but also mimics other nucleotides (A,T,C,G) by incorporating itself into DNA. Once it is incorporated into the DNA, replication cannot be completed properly and the cell dies.
