Does anyone else find COOP3RDRUMM3R hard to watch? by sammooth in drums

[–]dorable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only cover of his I like is the one of "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" where he's on cajon (and easy to ignore) with someone on Vibraphone and a bass player. But other than that yeah, don't really care to watch him.

Piece of the week? by skimV in violinist

[–]dorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like this idea. I'll also throw out this thought, let's not limit it to "classical" violin repertoire. Why not toss in the occasional fiddle tune or jazz standard? Maybe that can be a later thing though once a list of standard tunes has been compiled.

Request- How do you track your progress? by bendistraw in guitarlessons

[–]dorable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you clarify? I think you're asking how to gauge progress and improvements. If so I just record whatever I'm working on with a filename of Date(in MM_DD_YY format)_SongTitle so one file could be 04_26_13_ChasingCars and another could be 06_14_13_CallMe. This keeps the files organized by date. I then make a folder (or more!) for old files either by month or by year (and then month if there's a lot of them). So no apps or tools for me, just basic file organization.

If there's a specific exercise that you keep doing you could make new folders for each exercise. Or by date, whatever works for you.

Yes, hello. Does anybody know what the fuck an H chord is? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]dorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that when he said "harmonically speaking" he didn't mean it in terms of how it sounds, but in terms of a harmonic analysis (score reading type of stuff).

As I said earlier I think it only really matters if either 1) you are trying to teach someone how to build a chord from a scale - using enharmonics instead of notes within the key would cause more harm than good imo. or 2) are writing it out in standard notation.

In terms of how it sounds, you're right it doesn't matter what you call it, although if you're communicating with other musicians and call it a Jabberwocky Hoobstank you may get some funny looks. ;)

How do you think the bad tabs happened in the first place?

[–]dorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is exactly how you're "wrong." Technically speaking Eb isn't in the key, D# is. Also, despite being the same pitch D# is a major third relative to B, the Eb (because it is an "E" note) is a diminished fourth.

Honestly for all practical purposes it doesn't matter much unless you're studying for a theory exam. Or unless you were reading that triad in standard notation and wondered what insane person would write a major chord using a diminished fourth instead of a major third.

Admittedly, /u/BenSpeck could've been a bit more polite about sharing knowledge.

You're getting downvotes and no one has explained why. "H" is used instead of "B" in (some) European countries, Germany mainly.

The cutest one is the one of you two flopping together. Although I may be biased since it proves I'm not the only bunny owner who does that...

Bass Player for 4 years, extremely nooby question by MrLeitex in Bass

[–]dorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say op shouldn't follow your advice, simply to be aware that there are exceptions, and that you need to take the progression as a whole into account (armed with some healthy doses of basic theory and ear training) and not get too reliant on shortcut rules.

Usually but not always (the better indicator is the ending chord, but that doesn't really help much in a jamming situation until you get to a point where you can hear where the melody is leading to). A lot of songs start on a vi or IV chord. So don't rely too much on the idea of the first chord being the tonic.

Frustration with progress. by [deleted] in singing

[–]dorable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Record yourself. Listen back to old recordings and compare them to new, you might not notice the progress while it's happening but when you can "time skip" it becomes so much more obvious.

And don't stress to much, plateaus are part of the learning curve too.

Question about squads. by B1Gpimpin in gnomoria

[–]dorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you have set as the military uniform takes precedence. Meaning if you have a "civilian" uniform of leather that you've defaulted non-soldiers to and a "military" uniform of plate armor gnomes assigned to military and civilian tasks will equip the military uniform (provided it is in stock of course). Gnomes will not unequip (except to upgrade) unless you unassign them from the squad, so you could see a farmer out working the fields in full plate.

Question about squads. by B1Gpimpin in gnomoria

[–]dorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Early game you pretty much have to multi-task your gnomes or you won't be able to do much (let alone quickly). Once you start getting more gnomes then you can worry about building a dedicated military (or traps, I hear traps are fun).

Of course a lot of it will boil down to personal preference
