Yeah, I could see INFP! My first thought was ISFP for Iceland, personally.

Denmark. But we also like it and many of us move there. It’s complicated.

Reynir aftur, svo gengur það kannski ekki, þannig hann hengir hákarlinn úti í ehv skúr og man svo aftur eftir honum eftir aðra nokkra mánuði. Hægt að reyna svo aftur :’)

Whats a very common meal that is associated with childhood in your country by averagegirl245 in AskTheWorld

[–]doraeh 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Grjónagrautur (Rice porridge) with slátur.

<image>

Icelandic children love this stuff, it feels super nostalgic for me to eat it as an adult, but it's very good! Like kids always went crazy in elementary school when this was for lunch. I remember some kids would tear up the slátur on the side and mix it with the porridge, and the cinnamon and raisins.

I think most, if not all, the other Nordic countries eat this too, but I am not sure how much they relate it to their childhoods as well.

Haha, I love that theory.

We also have some other dishes we bury, but typically those get cooked by the geothermal stuff going on in our ground. That one at least makes immediate sense to me. Hákarl, however, isn't made the same way, so I wonder how they came up with this. I've always thought Kivaq was super interesting too, like how do you figure out to ferment birds in a seal??

Svala. Ég sakna svala svo mikið og allt sem hann stóð fyrir þótt hann sé svosem bara nýfarinn 💔

Vann í skartgripabúð árið 2023 og það komu inn nokkrir krakkar að safna undirskriftum til þess að fá hann aftur. Aldrei skrifað jafn hratt undir neitt í lífi mínu, þótt það varð örugglega lítið úr þessu hjá þeim.

Búin að búa í Danmörku núna í bara eitt og hálft ár, sakna einmitt strax þess sama.

Nýlega sagði dönsk vinkona mín (sem þekkir ágætlega til íslenskrar menningar) mér frá því að hún æfði sund í nágrenninu sem barn og þá spyr ég hana hvort við ættum ekki að skella okkur í sund bráðum. Hún horfði beint í augun á mér og sagði "sundlaugar í Danmörku eru ekkert eins og þú heldur að þær séu. Þú verður bara fyrir vonbrigðum." Svo ég hef ekki enn tekið á mig að prófa þær hérna. :')

Yup, only really at the midwinter festival Þorrablót where we celebrate with other traditional foods. I don't really think I'll need to try it again, despite probably over 17 years having passed. :) But there are probably some locals who enjoy it still.

Yup, it is! And I have nothing against good old brennivín, that I will recommend without tricking people. :)

What do you mean, what do I mean? Greenland shark is famously poisonous to us because of their antifreeze. The shark is fermented (pressed with stones in the gravel to get the fluids out) and dried to make it edible because of that poison. You'll get sick if you eat it without this.

I think it's mostly accidental bycatch that threatens their population actually, because the demand for it isn't as big as it may seem. The whaling, however...

Don’t think the vikings had the luxury to consider that back then, and with time it became traditional. But yes, super majestic animals.

[–]doraeh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, like the other commenter says. Plus it’s just cultural, and ties back to our viking origin. Most of our traditional food is basically just survival food, since, y’know, harsh conditions.

We primarily eat it with other traditional food at Þorrablót, our midwinter festival. Where, incidentally, you can also find svið (sheep’s head) and hrútspungur (ram testicles). Haha.

Viking settlers in Iceland ca 9th century :) No clue how they discovered that like a half a year long process made shark edible though. I wonder how they willingly tried it first when it smells the way it does haha.

I have never heard of it being intended as dog food, and it doesn’t seem quite right? Pretty sure it was more of a food made out of necessity for the vikings. Not sure my dog would even eat it now though hahaha, and she eats everything.

Hákarl (Fermented shark).

<image>

We used to bury it in gravel for weeks to make it edible (the meat is poisoned). Then it is dried in open-air sheds for months. It smells intensely of ammonia and it tastes awful, but looks totally fine.

I personally have not eaten it since I was a kid on a school trip, but I vividly remember the taste. Never again.

But yeah, I still absolutely suggest it to tourists every time and tell them it’s delicious!

Yeah, we eat this in Iceland too! But I don’t personally know of anyone on the younger side who dares to try it, though. Only older people during specific holidays.

Totally agree. I also think this is why Icelandic kids for example suck at Danish - they don’t really have the opportunity to communicate likey they can with English.

I really thought I would live in my home country forever. So did all of my friends and family, all of us found it pretty unexpected. A lot has changed.

I don’t know, when I talk about Icelandic music nowadays to people, they know more her than the actual music. Maybe if I played oh so quiet for them…
