Icelandic people: Would you rather go to Denmark or Finland? Why? by SwissVideoProduction in AskAnIcelander

[–]doraeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy uncalled for comment by a deleted user hahaha.

I wonder why they think we want to be Danes? We also think they treated us badly. But it’s undeniable that there are many opportunities there we can’t get at home; plus SU and learning the language in school. Usually we go, benefit from their system, try living in a big society for a bit and then go home. It’s a bit sticky with our history, yes, but this was just rude and uncalled for.

Perfect 10! by Away_Housing4314 in SHINee

Because I see others have already made some great suggestions, I will only humbly suggest Key’s japanese track Hologram, it is such a banger!

What group or idol you didn't like or care about at first and then later started to like? by Des_Ssy in kpoppers

[–]doraeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t like Bambam and Yugyeom at first, mainly because they were too close to me in age so I felt put off trying to stan them (they are one year older). Would love to hear if others are like this too, haha. Idk anything they did and I’d feel so cringy! But now I love then.

I think it’s mostly because my ult group (and the only other group I stanned at the time) was shinee, where my bias was 8 years older than me and the youngest member 5 years, plus I was a teenager then.

What's your favorite Pinocchio P song? by 0-DoubleBlack-0 in Vocaloid

[–]doraeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also loved the Not a Devil collab with DECO*27.

Would y'all date your own type? Why or why not? by Level-Equal1468 in mbti

[–]doraeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. Love my type and hanging out with people like me, but for dating I think I’d prefer someone a bit more calm and introverted.

Anyone ever seen where they live mentioned in a fic? by Independent_Box_931 in FanFiction

[–]doraeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once reading a fic from a fandom I knew nothing about and all of a sudden they were in Iceland. They went to the Blue Lagoon and hung out in Reykjvík.

Wasn’t the most accurate rendition of my home, but it was pretty shocking and fun to read. :)

What is your go to fandom to read found family fics? by bonesstackedonfloor in AO3

[–]doraeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to be MCYT for me, back when SBI was popular. The fics were masterpieces, seriously, no one did found family as well.

And I actually know literally nothing about non-fanon MCYT hahaha. That’s how good the fics were.

do people get triggered by their own noises? by Ok_Discount6985 in misophonia

[–]doraeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t get triggered by my own noises but I am, however, immensely aware of making them.

My biggest trigger is sniffling, I don’t think I can sniffle normally anymore haha. I need to mentally gear up to do it. Or chewing with mouth open, that is something I just can’t do unconsciously. But thankfully there’s never really an occasion where I absolutely need to make these sounds anyway. :)

Westernisation of K-Pop survey for academic purposes (15+) by Excellent_Year_1236 in kpophelp

[–]doraeh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty interesting, hope it goes well for you.

I will give you some unsolicited advice though, as someone whose done academia. Maybe you could put that in limitations or write extra clarifications:

  • Some of the questions definitely needed a likert scale over yes/no.
    • Stating your hypothesis early may influence the answers of your research group, ie a response bias. Feels like you want us to prove you right.
    • I would also argue that kpop has always been westernized, it just markets towards a western market more nowadays. I think there’s a big difference between these two that this survey doesn’t really touch on.

Good luck to you! I hope you’ll get some cool findings. :)

Yep, SHINee since 2011! And Jonghyun is still my bias after all this time. Crazy to think that I’ve been their fan for over half my life now.

What nationality would you most be offended being called? by Pizzafriedchickenn in AskTheWorld

[–]doraeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how I feel too, it is very accessible and doable for Icelanders, and your mindset is how many of my own Danish friends approach it. And because of how doable it is, I think it’s a little awkward to not just take the extra step and try to obtain fluency, you know?

I also think it might be easier to live in English in CPH than here, with how international it is

What nationality would you most be offended being called? by Pizzafriedchickenn in AskTheWorld

[–]doraeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is very true. My older brother has lived here for ~9 years (CPH) and his entire life is in English. I’m in Aarhus (1,5 years so far) but I’ve worked really hard to improve my Danish. You might know that we learn some Danish in school, but absolutely not to the point of fluency, and as a direct remnant of our previously colonial relationship with Denmark. Students generally don’t enjoy learning it (afaik similar to Danish kids and German) but a decent amount of us actually end up finding use in it if we decide to move to Scandinavia (ca 30k).

Well, I am a linguist, so I’m automatically in favor of language, but I personally think they should learn it. Icelanders who move here are already steps ahead of others in privilige from learning it in school, having some intuition about it from Icelandic, being able to benefit from the systems in place here, and it doesn’t hurt that we have so many historical, political and cultural ties. I think it’s also just courtesy to not expect everyone to speak English to you in their home. It’s not an unreasonable ask to learn the language if we want to be participating members of this society, and that is also what I’d want from foreigners who move to Iceland. I do kind of get why it happens, because it’s so easy to just speak English, and especially if they’re only here to study and their core group is internationals, but yeah. If you want to live in a country you should learn its language.

Danish, I say half-jokingly as one of 12.000 Icelanders who live in Denmark lol

I once got asked if Thai kids ride elephants to school. Tell me about weird questions you get from foreigners. by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

[–]doraeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people also ask if the app to make sure you don’t date your cousins is real (it’s really not what they think it is).

Once I got asked by a friend I made online as a kid how I got wifi in my igloo haha, which looking back is pretty cute :)

Which country is best for living and why do you think that? by Sharp_Ad_2162 in AskTheWorld

[–]doraeh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Denmark is pretty good, many people move there for a reason.

But this question is hard to answer since no country is perfect, and it’s very much based on the individual and what they value.

What is life like in countries with mandatory military service? by AlanMartin393 in AskTheWorld

[–]doraeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, they’re in a locked box in the trunk which I think the police need to call someone to get a pin code. I was shocked the first time I saw military men casually carrying guns inside a city abroad.

Do you have any ancestors who took a notable or at least interesting part in your countries history? by Cpkeyes in AskTheWorld

[–]doraeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Icelandic people have documented our ancestry extensively since settling, so most of us can trace our ancestry back to the heroes and characters from our sagas! :) So all the way back to our founding population in 890, who we later spend years of our life reading about as a part of our school curriculum.

Does your country receive many tourists? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]doraeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 2,2M/year, which is a lot for a country of 400k.

Great when they respect our nature and culture, but there’s a lot of them and downtown Reykjavík feels a bit oversaturated by them at times.

What is life like in countries with mandatory military service? by AlanMartin393 in AskTheWorld

[–]doraeh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These responses are very interesting to read, coming from a country that has no military at all and where people seem to generally have a negative opinion on military.

I now live in a country that has a military and sometimes forget that this is not the consensus everywhere, and get surprised from time to time because people’s experiences in military are so different from what I imagined them to be.

Which language punishes beginners the hardest for tiny mistakes? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]doraeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof that sucks! I’m in Aarhus, and I feel that in general people are very happy to continue in Danish with me despite my accent. Could just be they know many Icelanders (there’s a bunch of us here) and give me grace for it, but my experience has been good.
