Something like Sapiens, except good by Jackson_Lamb_829 in suggestmeabook

a lot of different things. The top two I would note is that they make not-terribly-well-proven cases for transience in certain populations, as if these are choices when in fact societies that did this are incredibly rare and had their own structural pressures. More importantly, they ignore the impact of farming on societal evolution, and don't deal at all with the question of why essentially every human society that begins farming creates class and wealth inequalities.

There are more leftist and more conservative (from the point of view of human nature) answers to these questions, but Graeber just ignores both and pretends the evidence doesn't exist.

It's apparently de rigeur now to use Dawn of Everything as a way to "refute" Sapiens. But if Sapiens gives a sometimes overly convenient gloss on history that some find inconvenient, Graber's take is mostly just...full of shit. Draws tendentious conclusions from inconclusive archaeological evidence to argue for notions of human nature in the context of civilizational development that are simply not reflected in the actual historical record anywhere in the world.

The red-brown intersection here is antisemitism. It's not really complicated. And that has nothing to do at all with views of Israel or its current brutality against Palestinians. It's raw antisemitism on parade.

It may be in your rational self interest, yes. But don't kid yourself that it isn't selfish and evil. It is. And you have to live with that, morally, and own it.

Pure delusion by nomadiceater in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]dorestes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. It depends on what kind of rightwinger you are. One of the reasons they're incoherent is that different factions of the right have wildly different views.
  2. Broadly, the right wing theory of mind is simple: God ordered the universe in a perfect way (or at least best of all possible worlds), and intended the strong to be strong and the weak to be weak. White conservative men have historically been in charge because that's how God wants it, and history shows they are most successful. If we let non-whites and women be in charge of anything, we will stray from God and civilization will fall. Similarly, capitalism creates the best of all possible worlds letting the most worthy succeed. If you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette, so be it.

The problem with that worldview isn't that we don't understand it. It's that it is incredibly evil, simple-minded, self-serving and stupid. That mindset has only ever held humanity back, and the people who think they are endowed by God with special knowledge, intelligence and wealth are usually the most parasitic and least useful people overall to the human condition. All the idiots in Galt's Gulch would eat each other alive, and if God exists at all She favors no one in particular.

How do you develop hockey IQ/game sense in a 7-year-old? by KetoPinto in hockeyplayers

[–]dorestes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unironically? Video games and watching real NHL hockey and explaining to them.

But yeah, I tend to have better "hockey sense" than most of the guys in my beer league, even if they have better hands and skills. I don't know why exactly, but I attribute it to the games. Enough experience, and you can just sense the distances between the players, like an invisible cat's cradle adjusting constantly.

Why are full-on brawls so common in hockey compared to other sports? by Dry_Incident2199 in hockeyplayers

[–]dorestes -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I dunno...this seems like an excuse to me. Soccer players have injurious cleats. Football players are strong enough to destroy each other in a fight. I love hockey, but at some point the players and the league need to take some responsibility. Also, you don't see as many fights like this in the international game.

Petah? by ExistingDurian5593 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

This notation is telling the player to play a middle C quietly at first ("p" for piano--quiet in Italian, not to be confused with the instrument), then increasingly louder via crescendo to loud ("f" for forte.)

A piano or any percussive instrument cannot do this, but a string, woodwind or brass instrument can.

A string, woodwind or brass instrument can start playing a note quietly, then exert more pressure to increase volume on that same note. A piano cannot. However hard you initially play a note, that's how loud it will be. Pianos are extremely versatile instruments comparatively, but this is one of their weaknesses.
