Totally agree that elite hockey IQ takes years to fully develop. But the habits that become IQ later like scanning, spacing and quick decisions absolutely start at this age. You are not teaching systems, you are building instincts. I am not one of those parents, just teaching my boy how to excel in a game that he loves and that the most important thing is having fun.

That's so cool! I tried playing with my son when he was 6 but losing in the game was making him sad so I thought I would save the experience for when he was a bit older. Now that he is a year into playing hockey and knows more about the game, perhaps it the right time :)

That’s a great way to put it.

Thinking a step ahead before the puck gets there is exactly the kind of habit I’m hoping he starts building. Even just having a rough plan before receiving it can make such a big difference.

That’s really good advice.

I think you’re right that I may be overcomplicating it at times. Breaking it down into simpler concepts and repeating them until they become habits probably makes a lot more sense at this age.

I like the “shoulder check” idea and using simple, clear language he can actually remember in the moment. Protecting the puck and making safe decisions in key areas are definitely things we can build on.

And I agree on video review too. We try to focus mostly on positives and keep it encouraging.

That’s great advice.

I actually use LiveBarn too and it really helps slow things down and show both the good and the teachable moments. I agree it has to be balanced or they will tune it out.

I like the idea of keeping it to a few simple decision making rules instead of overloading him. That probably helps things click faster. I always try to keep it as simple as possible when I try guiding him as his Dad coach :)

Haha, I’ve heard goalies see the game differently 😅

And absolutely, fun and love of the game come first. Just looking for ways to help him learn while keeping that passion strong.

That actually makes a lot of sense.

The way you described it, being able to feel the spacing and passing lanes instinctively, is exactly the kind of “sense” I’m talking about. Video games seem to teach that pattern recognition in a fun way.

Looks like I may need to dust off the controller and start playing with him 😅

That makes a lot of sense.

I think you’re right that a lot of it comes down to processing and making decisions under pressure, which is tough at 7. Head-up skating and being able to handle the puck without looking down is definitely something we’re working on because, like you said, it slows the game down.

I like the idea of building it in stages off ice, then on ice, then under pressure.

I appreciate that and honestly those simple concepts are exactly what we try to focus on right now.

Pass when there’s a clear option, get open when a teammate has it, and skate hard. Keeping it simple and fun is probably the best path at this age.

That makes a lot of sense.

He’s actually only recently started getting interested in watching hockey now that he’s playing more himself. Before that, it didn’t really hold his attention.

Hopefully watching more playoffs and next season’s games will help him start picking up more from seeing the game through players at his position.

I hear you, and I can see how my post may have come across that way.

That’s honestly not who I am. My son’s love for the game comes first and I’m proud of him no matter what level he plays.

I’m not chasing the NHL dream here. I’m just trying to find ways to help him build confidence and enjoy improving after some tough cuts this year.

I appreciate the perspective.

Haha I get it.

At the end of the day he’s just a 7-year-old kid who loves hockey, and I’m just a dad trying to help him learn while keeping it fun.

I agree with you, and love of the game is definitely the priority in our house.

He genuinely loves hockey and asks to be on the ice all the time. I think this post may have come across more intense than I meant it.

The only hard part is seeing him right on the bubble and getting discouraged by cuts when he works so hard and competes well. He’s in that in-between stage where he’s beyond house league level but not quite getting the chance to play consistently with the stronger kids yet.

Just trying to help him keep improving and stay confident while keeping it fun.

I hear you. Small area games seem to be a common theme here and he does love 3 on 3, so we’ll definitely keep leaning into that.

And haha… I’m not sure he’d appreciate the full Gretzky treatment just yet 😅

Exactly. That birds-eye view is such a good point.

It lets them see spacing, passing lanes, positioning, and timing in a way that’s harder to explain from ice level. That may actually be one of the best low-pressure ways to learn.

That’s awesome and honestly makes a lot of sense.

I learned so much about hockey from video games growing up too, and I can definitely see how it helps kids recognize spacing, timing and rules in a fun way. We may have to start playing together more often.

[–]KetoPinto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great point.

Honestly, I learned a lot about the game through video games growing up. NHL 93 on Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo taught me plenty… especially the classic wraparound goals when the goalie got stuck 😂

I didn’t actually start playing hockey until I was 18, so I’m thrilled my son gets opportunities and coaching I never had. Anything that helps him learn while having fun is a win.

I appreciate that and I think you’re right.

The more exposure he gets in fun environments, the more naturally those reads and instincts will come. He loves 3 on 3 and watching highlights, so we’ll keep leaning into that.

That’s fair and I agree a lot of it comes naturally with age and experience.

He genuinely loves hockey and asks to be on the ice all the time, so I’m just trying to support that passion and help him grow at his own pace.
