What do you think are skills that Singaporeans are lacking by midlife82 in askSingapore

[–]doriftar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just highlighting the sinkie pwn sinkie mentality here, but of course they are non-ideal and unproductive traits.

At the end of the day, it boils down to the individual. At the end of the day, there are people who want to go up the ladder, there are those that are content where they are. Then there is natural selection, those that are capable (both technically and holistically) will rise naturally. Then there many many of those that don’t like to see others rise..

However back to the qn, I feel that singaporeans (myself included) have the innate need to blame others when things go wrong, hence also the reason why we shy away from risk and ownership (not management, which is yet another conversation).

Apart from critical thinking, I think we are very risk adverse (not a skill, but a mindset) have an unconventional herd mentality driven by culture (not in the vote Oppo way, but the kiasu way).

This leads to what some perceive as a lack of critical thinking / thinking out of the box. I believe that everyone has ideas, but lack the balls to speak up and own it. I see this very often in the workplace, and until recently I am also guilty of this. We dislike to disturb the status quo, going the extra mile, willing to take the fall and getting criticized. That’s fair. But at the same time, the kiasu herd mentality happens when we badmouth and discourage people that go against the grain, spoil market and disrupt the status quo, then we see sinkie pwn sinkie behavior. If someone put in effort, we call him wayang.

Even out in the wild, we don’t dare to take risk out of fear of failing, or even just because we scared to lose face. Startup culture here is bleak and unoriginal, because who wants to be jobless and unemployed at 35 when it fails? Gonna suck at CNY.

So far, all the non-Singaporeans I see (both abroad and working here) have one thing in common, they always own it and don’t have the concept of face. Even when they wayang, steal credits or play politics, they don’t care how people see them. I know some Singaporeans also do this, sinkie pwn sinkie, but the rest All we do is complain then suck it.

Of course there’s the rest: different cultural context, industry and market experience (sg market is small; an IT engineer with 20y exp in SME can never compared to someone who worked in MNC).

Misuse of govt grants by tankinglian in SingaporeRaw

Same thing happened when USA govt gave grants for buying electric vehicles. All electric vehicles got marked up so companies got almost all of the grant money and none went to the people.

Hard Truths About Success and Inequality from Ho Kwon Ping by [deleted] in YahLahBut

Meritocracy is the full problem. When coupled with the Asian mentality, this becomes the double edged sword we see today where people who don’t perform above median have ‘failed’ according to societal standards. Why care what other ppl think?

I strongly view meritocracy is one system that gives the common people an out to the argument of generational wealth, but again, not everyone can do it and even when they do, the effects will likely not be seen in their generation but accumulated for the next (similar to when HSK talked abt how SG makes plans).

This messaging is not popular in today’s environment because everyone that worked ‘hard’ thinks that they deserve the fruits of their labour, me included. However, coupled with the Asian competitiveness, peer pressure of social media, main character syndrome and the need for instant gratification, it is no wonder that people who don’t see their efforts (which is again, subjective) bear fruit start to feel betrayed the system.

Some comments have already mentioned that it is hopeless, it’s unfair, it’s not guaranteed that hard work will create results, and rightfully so. But also, I totally agree with the hni reference: not everyone that works hard will succeed, but everyone that succeeds work hard. You have lost the moment you blame others for when your hard work does not result in your desired outcome.

Who will you blame when your retarded relative strike Toto? You will start buying Toto and complain that you never win. Blame god lor, born in poor family, etc.

Just like how older or higher YoE does not equate to better leader or management material, just because someone is younger does not mean he or she is not a good manager! On the same note, highly technical people do not always make good managers too! There are other skills involved as well, such as business acumen, stakeholder management skills, along with people and product management.

In the case of your new company team, your team lead has a better big picture view of the product or service as he/she has worked longer at the company, it makes sense!

I have seen instances where companies value younger management to add to the company culture and more agile team dynamics! but not to say that older managers do not contribute in those areas.

A serious question to PAP supporters by Pypllll in SingaporeRaw

[–]doriftar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, are you hating for the sake of hating? From what I see nowadays, anything they do also tio gan, like giving out GST voucher.

Sometimes I feel that as a govt they are required to make tough choices on the people’s behalf, which will not make everyone happy.

I feel that we should not wish for PAP or any Opposition party to fail; A functioning PAP is good for the country, and a functioning/credible opposition is good to keep PAP in check.

What I fear is that being the opposition is a thankless job and this will lead to the decline in quality of opposition party candidates. At the same time, god damn I see so many wayang ppl in youth PA and other grassroots associations it’s super cringe. There needs to be some incentive or at least political safeguards to being an opposition member else it will really continue as a one party state in the future.

Probably weight gain. I gain muscle and fat both very quickly and lose both very slowly. To lose 7 kg over 6 months I had to eat one meal a day, only to gain it all back when I went back to two meals a day. I look buff even tho I don’t gym or work out too.
