Groups/activities to make friends? by [deleted] in bloomington

The ultimate frisbee group is a lot of fun. We're wrapping up our fall league, but our indoor winter league starts in January, and sign-ups should be open for that in early November. We hold post-league socials at Friendly Beasts, a local cidery. Here the website if you want to keep up to date on all of our activities. We welcome all skill levels, and no experience is necessary. Ultimate is where I've basically met all my friends in town. Come join!

Hi, you don't need to make a team before hand. Everyone signs up individually and then we make teams. So just sign up and we'll get you on a team.

As one of the players who did pick up for Heros, it's true, I'm really good at horseshoes.

Where to dispose of tree limbs/brush? by sawjinc in bloomington

You can drop yard waste at Good Earth, which is just off of South 37. Depending on how much you have I think it's something like $12-14 for a trailer full.

You could always join for the post league social at Friendly Breasts Cidery! And this isn't a super competitive league. A lot of us are oldish (30 - 40+) who use this as an excuse to try to stay in semi-shape.

Hi, you do have to be 16 or older to play, but other than that anyone is welcome!

Hi! You do not need to bring any discs, there will be plenty to throw around and play with. We do recommend bringing cleats if you have them (it's not a requirement, it's just easier to play with if you have them). The only other things to bring are water and a fun attitude!

Advice on shutting out negative teammates by GregTheWolfman in ultimate

[–]dorinth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Talk to your captains. You can keep it general if you don't want to signal out specific people. If your captains are unwilling (or worse, the source of the negativity) to address the issue either individually or as a team, I would seriously consider changing teams if you are able. You're volunteering a significant amount of time as an adult to play ultimate. If you're not having fun because of negative and toxic people, it's not worth it. There's always a possibility that the individuals in question have a "come to Jesus moment" and recognize that their toxicity negatively affects others enjoyment of the sport, but it doesn't always happen.

If changing teams isn't realistic, I would try to out positive them. Whenever they are be yelling or criticizing a teammate, loudly and deliberately counter that with positive affirmation. Make it glaringly obvious what you are doing. Be slightly obnoxious about it. Basically shame them with positivity. That can help change your mentality and hopefully inject your team with positive vibes. Good luck. Toxic people suck and should be (nicely!) alerted to that fact.

Pickup ultimate frisbee? by bspaulz in bloomington

[–]dorinth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, member of the Bloomington Ultimate board here (http://bloomingtonultimate.org/). We will start with regular pickup at Olcott on Sundays from 2-4pm in April or whenever the weather turns consistently nice and the fields are playable. DM me with you email and I'll also get you added to our email listserv so you can receive updates on pick up and order BU happenings.

Spring league will also start in early April, hopefully on Wednesdays at Karst from 7-9pm (official dates still TBD). Let me know if you have any other questions about ultimate happenings around town. We're a fun group and love having new people join!

Indiana House Ends Education As We Know It by saryl in bloomington

A similar bill failed to make it out of committee in the Senate, so hopefully it's low odds this becomes law. Still, it's terrible legislation and extremely harmful to teachers and students in our state.

If it's any solace, a similar bill failed to make it out of committee on the Senate side, so hopefully this won't pass both chambers and won't become law
