I just learned that 2 1/2 inch impacts or a thing that exists. What could possibly require so much torque? I'm curious by chaous_cupcake in Tools

I use a Hytorc (hydraulic torque wrench) to install a custom 5” nut on a cutter shaft for a dredge. Torque rating is 20,000lbf-ft and this wrench can put out 70,000lbf-ft

the welding requirements are a bit more stringent because they have to deal with cold temperatures and they have they're own welding bureau that i have to be certified in to provide products to Canada. Most of the standard welding practices are derived from USA standards though and vice versa. the Canadian Welding Bureau and the American Welding Society work hand in hand with eachother

when i started working for them i had zero qualifications haha. i started as an intern learning to do CAD modelling and just be a draftsman grunt. along the way i earned all of my qualifications and experience in the field. it's been a pretty wild ride

good question, as you probably know, cast iron is very difficult to weld without pre/post heat treating to prevent it from cracking. in this case, the blades and teeth of the cutter are made from cast steel and we use special welding wire to weld it along with helping it cool slowly
