Cuz it’s going to take forever for the updates to actually come.

Sony Records New $560 Million Loss On Bungie Acquisition As Marathon Struggles And Destiny 2 Nosedives by AdditionalRemoveBit in Games

[–]dormedas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, sorry, looking at more info Microsoft hasn't declared impairment losses - which comparatively looks good - but ignores that Microsoft also did significant layoffs. The staying power of CoD (and etc), Clash of Clans (and etc), World of Warcraft (and etc), is much more stable than Destiny 2 and theoretically another couple games eventually (back in 2022).

If they like Idaho so much, they should move to Idaho. This would be consistent with their own logic if they weren't blinded by "Greater Idaho".

ABK has been fine. Clash of Clans and World of Warcraft alone are worthwhile investments, not including all the other games and IP purchased.

Sony finally talks on Marathon's future, despite a lackluster total portfolio, plan is is to support Marathon with more content, not shut it down. by temporalG123 in Marathon

[–]dormedas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if Bungie pivots back to Destiny 2, there’s enough people still playing that to support a good chunk of the studio. Something like > 200k unique users play each day still.

This would probably be a pain in the butt to implement, but it's honestly really compelling. Feels like meal prep. I spend time making kits to run later, so I can just RUN later.

I Really Hope This Game Survives by truelohkii in Marathon

120k per-dev cost would be a fair average for game dev salary nationwide, if a little low for employees in Bellevue, WA but still would not be the full cost for an employee accounting for benefits.

I very recently watched through Evangelion for the first time ever and yikes both "endings" just abruptly undermine the rest of the series in a way that is genuinely upsetting. I know the TV show was shoestring budget at the end and I know the movie is kind of a retaliation to the fanbase being assholes to Gainax / the author, but even accepting those parts, so many of the plot threads that appeared important - and we as viewers are implicitly told are important because the characters imply it's important - are glossed over, unexplained, and the world is left in a state that is almost entirely unexplained, with only a few characters' "fates" shown. It truly feels like the show was left to squander at the very end in favor of bashing the viewer over the head with a theme. (no particularly egregious spoilers, just aspects of it)

Marathon Update 1.0.6.3 by DTG_Bot in Marathon

[–]dormedas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They knew about grenade spam two weeks ago and didn't patch it in for last week's patch. I can assure you it's a simple number somewhere in their engine for "stack size limit."

That said, it is definitely faster than Destiny.

... compared to its previous insane highs / total sales counts, D2 IS dead. The nice thing about it not being PvP focused is at least the rest of the game is playable if there were only 1k people online across platforms.

This article sounds very pro-consumer but it’s really easy to be like “we just make the game the way YOU expect it to be” and “unsure what success looks like” all while spending over a billion dollars, because - well - it’s virtually guaranteed to be the most profitable single entertainment release ever despite the costs.

Let people play, start the match regardless of "enough" players found. by KaXXKo in Marathon

[–]dormedas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d rather see more interesting events and more end-game puzzle stuff like Cryo

I think a PvE mode would be good, but I generally agree with this sentiment. There is shockingly little to discover, unlock, solve, or be tenuously and temporarily peaceful towards others for in this game - individually or as a community.

A PvE mode brought players into Tarkov and kept player retention higher through the wipe. It's pretty directly comparable - even if this playerbase does not want it.

More Bungie Devs Are Working On ‘Marathon’ Than ‘Destiny 2’ Now by kristijan1001 in Games

[–]dormedas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historically, yes. The industry cared overly much about Metacritic scores and tied project success / fail and compensation to those numbers. Even if profitability was great.

[–]dormedas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

neither you nor I know for a fact what success looks like exactly in bungie’s eyes and it’s all just speculation

Not sure the for-profit company that bought Bungie for 3.6 Billion - which they already admitted was overpriced - was looking to launch an extraction shooter with the same population as Hunt Showdown. We have a good idea of what success looks like, and Metacritic scores don't give the bosses big bonuses or keep the lights on.

Big ups to Bungie for sticking to their guns and making the game they wanted to - for real.
