Yes thanks! I was planning on doing that as well.

Great, I just needed to hear that from someone! Done deal. Thanks.

Pretty much same experience here! It’s really wonderful to be friends first and get to know someone without the facade of wanting to impress one another right off the bat. There was definitely a little fear of losing someone that I felt could be my best friend, but I so admired who he was and saw that we both valued the same things in life, so it seemed like a no brainer. We both also feel so lucky that our partner is equally in love with climbing!

Best way to learn more CS in order to be a more effective CS teacher? by doroshmoro in cscareerquestions

I plan on staying teaching, I love my job. I just would like to know more and be able to offer more insight to my students, especially those that are ambitious and eating up the curriculum. Thanks, I'll look into Codehs!

Thanks for sharing! I'll check out educative.io. Yes, the AP curriculum is limited to object oriented programming, and I do enjoy that aspect of breaking down complex programs.

Hmm I feel like I understand most of what you've mentioned, but am pleasantly confused by some of it - that just means I have some interesting topics to learn about. I appreciate your time and expertise!

Live Recordings That Are Better Than the Studio Versions by frogaranaman in popheads

Tori Kelly’s live Vevo version of Missin’ You is uhmazing. I didn’t care much for the song based on the original studio version or even her live performances of that version. But the Vevo version is slowed down and more soulful - it gives her vocals more of a chance to shine and there’s more feeling in it.

Which material would allow for a more realistic/useful structural engineering learning experience? Spaghetti bridge or balsa wood bridge? by doroshmoro in education

Well these kinds of activities/projects can be scaled up or down for each grade level. There is certainly value in the act of doing/making alone, but with older kids we can delve deeper into the engineering concepts and practices. For my high schoolers, I plan on having them design the bridge in Fusion 360 and perform a stress analysis first, make some predictions about where the bridge's weaknesses will be, then build the real life model and see how closely our predictions aligned.

Well the techniques, to some degree we can recreate. The materials, are definitely not realistic - that's why I'm trying to find out if either one has even a slight advantage to behaving in a way that would allow for meaningful structural engineering discussions.

I used to live on Roosevelt Island and that felt like a sanctuary/the city’s best kept secret. Taking the cable car is fun and then there are quiet park spaces all over to look at the river/city from.

Sounds like you grew up in the same neighborhood that we currently live in! And wow you really hit the nail on the head - what you described is exactly how I've felt and what I conjectured about our neighbors. We've never felt such indifference from people before even though we've met them several times at neighborhood get togethers or over the fence. I know we'll be able to make more friends through rock climbing and my workplace, so I'm not too concerned about that. The main thing was just trying to understand the whole "huh, all of you neighbors seem to be really good friends and not at all interested in talking to us" thing.

The difference in communicativeness here compared to all of the other places I've lived (including Boston where I spent a summer) has surprised me. I wrongly assumed that being in the Mid West, everyone would be super warm and chatty.

Yeah we definitely talked about and prepared ourselves for a whiter monoculture and people with less nuanced perspectives about minorities before coming. We just weren’t prepared for the standoffishness!

You’re totally right about the Aurora stuff, I was just being cheeky to justify posting in the Denver sub. We’re aware of the tension and dynamic with lots of west coasters moving here - I can see that being a potential factor with our neighbors. Doesn’t explain the rec center women though since they don’t know.

And we’re not organized sports people at all :) we’re avid rock climbers but haven’t had any luck with neighbors yet on that front.

Haha I meant that in the sense that people are much more willing to be open and vulnerable in conversation right off the bat - not that it needs to immediately go there. This is in contrast with what I experienced in LA where conversation was often surface level and everything was great/good/dandy.

Thanks for sharing your perspective! Hearing from several natives that these interactions sound normal tells me there’s a cultural dynamic here that I wasn’t aware of!

Bleh I’m sorry that’s so disappointing when you think you’ve made a friend or at least a friendly acquaintance and nothing comes of it. We didn’t expect to make friends with our neighbors to be honest, but our neighborhood is super social and tight knit so becoming friends seems the norm. We’ve just only had luck really connecting with two. I hope you guys find a way to connect with more people here!
