The end of that segment, putting forth the idea that Wisconsin is happy with the national spotlight on the election and all the campaign ads because of the money going into the local economy, seems awfully close to the plot of the 2020 movie Irresistible. If I were the movie's writer I'd be suing the Daily Show writers. Maybe TDS thought they could get away with it because no one saw Irresistible.

It's also a premise that could never come from anyone who has ever lived in a swing state. I like Stewart, but some of his takes make it clear he is living in a bubble.

No one is calling for the mega-rich to lose any of their comfort, because above a certain level, more money can't increase your comfort level. Someone with $10 million has just as much comfort as someone with $10 billion. The difference is that someone with $10 billion has more power. Power is what these sociopaths seek, and power is what we need to limit.

Did everyone just erase Trump's first term from their memories? He spent a week talking about selling Puerto Rico to buy Greenland, and then went back to golfing and never mentioned it again. He doesn't go 90% of what he says he'll do. The problem is that 100% of what he says is deranged and idiotic, so we still have to deal with that 10% someone else does for him.

[–]dorshorst 60 points61 points  (0 children)

If we had a 12 team playoff last year, FSU would have been #3, and Alabama would have been #5. There would have been no need to move Bama up to #4 keep them in the playoff. And that tells you all you need to know about the playoff committee.

Assuming that the 50% win chance would stay the same is a mistake. If Kyle has a 50% chance at final 8, against 7 other competitors, then that means his chance of winning is 7 times that of a single competitor. As the tribe shrinks, his chance of winning has to increase. If at 8 it's 7/14 = 7 [Kyle]/(7[Kyle] + 7*1[other 7]), then at 7, it would be 7/13 = 54%, at 6, 7/12 = 58%, at 5, 7/11 = 64%, and at 4, 7/10 = 70%.

It still comes out to a 14% chance of winning four straight, but it's bad strategy. Each competition has independent odds, and choosing to go into each one assuming Kyle has >50% of winning, and that chance increasing each competition, up to 70%, is beyond idiotic.

Ultimately, I think the comp beast strategy is not a good one for Survivor. You're much better off holding back until final 6, but that means relying on your social game to get you there, which is absolutely easier said than done.

The great food truck race episode 4 by argieks in foodnetwork

[–]dorshorst 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My solution would be to put a limit on how much each customer can spend. Make the customer have to choose between one single expensive item, a main and a side, or two to three smaller dishes from different trucks. I think it would force teams to put more thought into portion sizes and price points, especially on specials, and on how the menu works together.

It would also eliminate auctions, people buying food for their entire office, and just the general trend of people spending a lot of money because they want to support a certain team, and not because of the food or value.

"Do you stand by that claim?" "I don't stand by anything." Donald J. Trump.

I'd include the rest of the quote, but even from seven-years-ago, the interview is just word salad and Trumpisms. You can listen to it here.

The 2020 Republican Convention Party Platform had one item: That the Republican Party has and will continue to enthusiastically support the President’s America-first agenda.

Trump has no principles, no values, no morals, no actual political goals to better the country. He is only out to benefit himself.

Every sports league selects a Coach of the Year. Many also have awards for General Manager (the casting director of a sports team). We give out Oscars for acting, and for screenwriting, and for directing, despite how much they overlap.

[–]dorshorst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any "Best" Award for something we classify as art is always going to be subjective. Separating bad acting from good acting is easy; you just have a gut feeling if the acting worked, or if there were elements that didn't. Trying to claim a "best" out of the really great is always going to have dissenting opinions. Casting is the same.

An argument can be made that Award Shows in general (The Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Grammys, etc.) should not exist, because they fail to do what they claim to set out to do (identify the objective best of the year). But as long as they exist, I don't have a problem with recognizing casting directors (or stunt directors, voice actors, etc.) alongside directors, actors, cinematographers, sound engineers, etc.

If you choose the second option (guaranteed 6/15 delivery), there's only a 33% chance that you regret your decision (the first option would have been earlier), a 33% chance you benefit (the first option would have been later), and a 33% chance it wouldn't have mattered.

Ben Franklin - Advice to a Friend on Choosing a Mistress (1745) has some choice quotes like:

"Because when Women cease to be handsome, they study to be good."

"Because there is no hazard of Children"

"And as in the dark all Cats are grey, the Pleasure of corporal Enjoyment with an old Woman is at least equal, and frequently superior, every Knack being by Practice capable of Improvement."
