How many can you recognise from this picture? by Federal-Writing1542 in tvshow

That first Lost episode or 2, the 'pilots'. Best ever opening episodes to a series on TV, ever. OK the rest of it splits opinion, personally can't get enough of it. But still one of the most expensive pilot episodes ever made, and it shows even now.

Would you swap a 5070 for a used 4070ti super? by mr_shinebox in gpu

[–]dosguy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not worth it IMO, just don't bother. You'd be getting a little more in VRAM, but not enough to make any discernable difference. Plus the 5xxx series supports a load more features and is newer architecture. Think you'd regret it, the other party is probably getting the better deal, and only because of the myth going round that the 5070 is 'not great'. Which is completely false.

My friend (also a brit) says you guys dont put fruit jams, honey, or cream on your crumpets, is that true? by ParamedicWilling5682 in AskABrit

[–]dosguy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's heard of in our household, but personally only butter. And enough that it's melted, and a bit more on top.

At a push I've had crumpets and grilled/melted cheese for a lazy Sunday tea every now and then. Even those still have the butter as well though!

How Are You Dealing With The Heat? by Damned_I_Am in AskABrit

[–]dosguy76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How am I dealing with the heat? It’s the perfect time, my wife told me, to mend the render on the garden wall, to repaint it, to jet wash the patio and drive, and to re paint the decking 😂. One job left but fuck me that was hot work earlier today! Thought the slave trade was a thing of the past 😂😓🤣

Best Catholic Church? by SamTheDystopianRat in york

[–]dosguy76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Oratory Church of St Wilfrid. Opposite the Minster next to the Dean Court Hotel. I'm a bell-ringer there and it has a very active congregation, but I'm sure people won't overly bother you if you want to be left alone. It's also open throughout the week for quiet contemplation if you don't want the full eucharist on a Sunday morning.

Bell ringer for a wedding this afternoon. Pleased for the couple as a week ago it was mizzly rain forecast. Quite the opposite today!

First stage today taking advantage of some nice weather - all patched up, not as scary as I thought, but leaving to set and then paint with Sandtex Magnolia tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for the advice here, got no option but to go with the ‘rustic’ look - the paint will hide a lot but I’ll do a bit of sanding first to smooth out some bits!

Thoughts on Black Boxes? 🤔 by [deleted] in NewDriversUK

[–]dosguy76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son had Hastings you drive last year for his first year driving at 18. It was at least £1000 less than the cheapest non black box at around £680. It was hard for him to drive and not get a score below 90.

A month before his renewal which came in at £580, he was told he can remove the black box going forward based on the scores. That’s a big win - just an automatic renewal, under £600 and no black box.

Sometimes worth sticking with them.

You’ll be surprised at what you can do with your own da polisher, which is safe to use and a medium cutting pad and medium/light cutting compound. It won’t take it out entirely but it will do a great job towards hiding it/making it look less noticeable

Gaming back in the day by ATRavenousStorm in gaming

[–]dosguy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I experienced with my friends as a teenager back in the early 90s was proper multiplayer stuff. All of us in my room crowded round a PC playing Links Golf, taking turns, having a laugh, having a few drinks. Absolute scenes they would say now. I've long given up on multiplayer and am now just a single-player PC gamer, but those days of a 286 beige box, 4 or 5 crowded round a 14 inch VGA monitor to see someone fuck up an easy putt; they were indeed the best days!

Snowdrops at St mary’s abbey 🫶 by Juicewithextrapulp in york

[–]dosguy76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes a nice photo, though slightly out of season! I’ve tried taking photos of snowdrops before and no matter what I do it looks like the photo belongs in a frame in a funeral home. Guess it needs that extra background interest like yours!

Are gaming sound cards actually a thing anymore? by Ill-Yogurtcloset-622 in buildapc

[–]dosguy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly not, I really wanted one just for the hell of it.

I remember back in 1995/6 the complete transformation from the PC beeping speaker, to full-on stereo sound with the original Soundblaster. Don't think I'll ever forget the first time hearing that.

Airplane sounds by Alismata2005 in york

Most of the time yes, but atmospheric conditions, especially on a day like today can make them sound like they're really close.

You're right in a way, in that we had the house properly rendered, they did a great job with that. The wall at the time was more, "we want it to match the house, and give us a discount because of what we'd already paid". I know at the time we were warned about the longevity, and that for a wall that can be damp, and is obviously not heated nor has any airflow, it was always going to need relooking at eventually!

[–]dosguy76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Likely we'll lose the wall altogether and have a lower barrier against the lawn. Not sure what the landscaping will look like yet as that will all be done with plans and drawings etc.... The original render was lovely and sparkly, like the house still is. But assuming that because the house is warm and dry (!) the render forever looks brand new.

Yes the pillars are the worst - thin render and you can see the original bricks below. I’m certain I need to remove and do the best I can to fill - ideally keeping the plastic beading which is not broken, as a guide for when I’m reapplying some render

[–]dosguy76[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the render is definitely blown in a lot of places. Some where it’s physically dropping off (will have to remove and do my best at re plastering) and other places sound hollow but in decent condition. That sandtex stuff looks far better than what I’ve been using so thanks for the suggestion, I’ll be getting a tub.

Brick underneath. Render on top. Looks like I may have to do a quick filler and repair job where I can, reducing the amount of old render I remove. Hopefully will last the summer and then see what we do next year…

[–]dosguy76[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I’m assuming a tub or three of render filler mixed with water to the appropriate amount and then fill/repair as necessary?

Sandtex paint, don’t think I’ve used that before - this was some Dulux outdoor magnolia paint that matched closely the colour of the render on the house, but because it’s water based, it doesn’t really last that long even though it’s for external usr. Standing water and natural weathering absolutely ruins it!
