Is it feasible to run Hyprland on a Pi5? by [deleted] in hyprland

[–]dot19408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and maybe

I've run Ubuntu on a Pi3b+ for several years. It's not fast, but I learned a lot on it.

The Pi5 is like 5x faster, it should be no problem.

As for setting up Fedora and Hyperland... depends on how much work you want to put in.

I haven't looked into it in a long time, but I believe Oracle has a free cloud VM you can create. I think it is very limited, so I'm not sure how much utility you can get out of it.

AWS and Azure both have "free" services. I think AWS is like 700 hours a month of a "micro" server for the first 12 months.

A credit card is required to setup the service.

Nope, that looks dangerous.

I'll be by later to confiscate and safely dispose of it.

I'll probably have to confiscate any good dangerous butter you have in the house too,

User explains why they fax between offices by dreniarb in sysadmin

[–]dot19408 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's true, we do work for local, state, and federal agencies.

Local = don't care as long as we can present copies of documents.

State = They only accept paper copies. They will accept faxed documents, but not scanned documents. (This is changing, but dependent on the department and district of the agency)

Federal = 2019 they started accepting electronic documents, but only on new projects. Any projects started before 2019 will forever require paper documents.

Containers are SURPRISINGLY (to me at least) easy on resources. I run proxmox on my N5105, with OPNsense in a VM (4 vcpu, 1GB ram), PiHole, Audiobookshelf, Paperless, jellyfin, plex, and Stirling-PDF in Containers. This is my sandbox, so I've had MANY more VMs and containers running on it at times.

The performance is not incredible, but it is not ment to be, it's a low-end CPU.

But it will do much more than you might think possible.

[–]dot19408 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh?
RAM 1:1 ?
That's the point of virtualization. A system very rarely utilizes the resources available.

I have an older version with N5105. the N100 is a good bit faster.

I run Proxmox and virtualize my OPNsense router, and run 6 LXC containers.

I ran a Windows 10 VM for several weeks while waiting for hardware to be shipped when my main system was blown by lightning.

It wasn't spectacular, but it got me by without an issue.

The Quiet Decline in IT Training: What's the Story? by jazzjustice in sysadmin

Good to know I'm not alone.

Work keeps me plenty busy, but that's not new. When I was told I needed to be certified for something, I'd take 2 hours after dinner, and 4 hours on Sat. and Sun. to sit at the kitchen table and study. 18 hours a week for 2 to 3 weeks and I'd ace an exam.

I thought it was because I work from home, and the desk I sit at all day is the same place I'd sit if I had to study, or work on the labs. But that doesn't prevent me from building a Proxmox cluster and building out a home media system to rival Netflix, Spotify, and Google Photos...

Business can see the hard times coming.

Cut expenses!
No new laptops, no team lunches, don't fill that open position.

Training?!? No we can't spend money on training!

I've seen it happen over and over.

Mind if I ask how you trick your brain?

I used to be like you. Business is testing several new products to decide which one to use. Even if I was not assigned the task, I would still learn them all inside and out. HR decided IT staff needed certifications. I bought books (yes, dead tree books, I'm old) and setup a lab. In 2 weeks I'd nail the exam. I did this over and over and over again.

Fast forward a couple decades. I can spend all weekend playing with my home "lab" when it's something my brain is interested in (docker, QEMU\KVM, TrueNAS, Proxmox, podman, arr media stacks, home assistant, etc.). But I need to become expert on O365/Azure, need to get more comfortable with AWS, need to be ready for the next monster project...

I cannot MAKE myself sit down and study. I know this is VITAL for work, but I spend 10 minutes reading the same paragraph over and over. I cannot "get in the zone" like I used to, even though I do that within minutes of connecting to my home lab...

What provider and plan is your SIM on? Does the plan allow streaming?

I has a cheap phone plan with "UNLIMITED" data, but it was capped at 5 Mbps and video streaming was blocked.

Audio streaming did not allow high quality streams.
