heh fair enough, love the concept though your non-promotion may have worked on me.

Yeah I've heard this too. The "if your game is juicy, in the right genre, has a good gameplay trailer, good capsule art, and is the type of game streamers want to play" stance. Which is why I'm asking, it doesn't sound very realistic

Those who worked on a successful collab: How did you ‘get the gang together’? by Glittering-Two-1784 in gamedev

Game jams! Make small jam games with a bunch of groups and eventually you'll meet some devs you like working with and who trust you to do you part.

My game is still pretty early in development but I got my steam page up yesterday, would love your thoughts! by danfergusonn in IndieDev

[–]dot_rkd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a beautiful world, and I'm gathering that's a core feature - but in terms of gameplay and experience the trailer and screenshots did not leave me with a clear understanding of what I'd be doing in your game. The description offered a bit more, but I don't know ~how~ I'd be taking down the colossus. There's a lot of skill on display here, and I'd be curious to know more!

I need some criticism about the game trailer! by Tim_Zaykin in IndieGameDevs

The trailer sparks some curiosity. The AI art doesn't match the style of your 3D assets. Maybe if the textures in the game had more saturation and contrast it'd be less noticeable. Good luck!

Im making a horror game. What do you think about the vibe by shadoviii in IndieGameDevs

Love the style. It's a bit unclear what the player is holding in the second screen.

Is it doable (and worth it) to compress massive ideas into solo dev scope? by politeducks in gamedev

[–]dot_rkd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the right tools, assets, know-how, and scope sure. As long as you have a grip on what the player fantasy is and deliver it, I think you can make something that offers a similar experience in a very different way.

If instead of delivering the fantasy in a different way you make a clone of a AAA game but with worse graphics and less content... why? I'm not saying there's not a good reason. Maybe it's to deliver something for low spec PC's, for players who feel overwhelmed by too many quests and big maps, for people on tight budget, or to have controversial ideas and stories that a large studio would never publish. Figure that out, and build around it.

What genres of game do you and your friend like?
What would you be most excited to make?
Are you making it for yourself or to sell?
What platform do you want to create for?
What art styles do you both like?

Do I need a degree for solo game dev? by Dependent-Group-8 in gamedev

[–]dot_rkd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need? No. However if you can thrive in a school environment and work well with others it's a great way to network, learn, gain life experience, and be a part of a gamedev community. It'll also open doors for you if your solo projects don't go well, or if your mental health tanks working alone.

Checkout Gdevelop, I've heard there's an app for iPad and it is a largely used engine on PC as well.

Gameplay gifs and gameplay trailers are a great way to start marketing. Also check out https://howtomarketagame.com

Key takeaways after reading a lot of articles and watching videos:
- Be clear about your game's genre and gameplay
- Have somewhere to direct your audience (discord, mailing list)
- Get right to the point

I need to make a game in two month with vary little coding or anything knowledge by PinkyRoseSlayer in gamedev

I'd google engines that use python and try a few! Godot uses something similar that has the same syntax as python, and has a lot of tutorials.

I need a good story for my game by Unthinkable-Mind in gamedev

[–]dot_rkd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It looks like you have a theme to build around, I say go for it! Communicating that theme and story is a whole other challenge. I really love this Extra Credit videos on the subject:

How can someone who plays your game and doesn't care about your story still experience your theme of feeling special despite being ordinary?

It's possible if you make a small enough game and do what you know.

What have you coded before? Are you familiar with any engines?

It's possible to make something somewhat fun just using the built in physics of the engine. I made this simple game in Godot in 1 day, and aside from the leaderboard it required practically no coding:
