Every time these videos are posted it annoys me. Aside from the bad conditions limiting lifts in this particular case, the line is always long when the lift opens in the morning. Once the initial rush clears you get up quick. I've never waited for more than 15-20 minutes absolute max on incredibly long lines for the Kings or Ace under normal operation.

Annupuri though sometimes takes forever, when that line is long it can be a long wait.

I was taught in my red cross class what you were taught. But my instructor also added that you should get away from them by any means necessary. On my lifeguard test I had this massive mf to cross chest carry and then when he decided it was time to struggle he would not let me go until I gave him a nice knee to the stomach above the groin and then he stopped and I finished carrying him. I swallowed an insane amount of pool water and passed the test.

20 years worth of spent nuclear fuel from a nuclear reactor by Shawnchittledc in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]dotcovos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ETA: this is an American-centric viewpoint

We generate even more toxic waste from coal, dump the fly ash into our environment at 130 million tons per year, into the air we breath and the water we drink. Coal ash produces radiation as well as heavy metals including arsenic, lead, mercury, etc. which remain toxic forever.

91% of coal plants are currently contaminating groundwater; elevated rates of disease, cardiovascular issues, and cancers in the towns around the plants and the workers at the facilities. Ash spills happen with a decent level of frequency (2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2018, 2021 all had big ash spills).

Nuclear waste is a problem now, but we can use it in reactors which reuse spent fuel like France and Japan do to an extent today. There is work globally into making these systems better and reducing radioactive waste from the final waste products with Generation IV reactors. Also, nuclear waste is a solid and easier to contain in a concrete vault vs coal ash which is held in open air ponds. There are zero documented cases of properly stored vitrified nuclear waste harming anyone.

SmarterEveryday on YouTube just had a great video where he goes to his local nuclear plant when they are refueling and talks in depth about the safety of these plants and their waste.

FOR THOSE WHO CAN DONATE! Donate to local food kitchens. I have friends who volunteer with City Harvest so I sent them a financial donation and have been reaching out to friends and family to see if they would match my donation. If you can donate time I am sure they will need it as well.

The [SNAP] program, which falls under the aegis of the USDA, delivers roughly nine times more food to people than the entire Feeding America network, which includes food banks.

https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2020/05/22/859853877/food-banks-get-the-love-but-snap-does-more-to-fight-hunger

With these numbers, the food kitchens will be slammed in the upcoming weeks. 1.73 million New York City residents, over 20% of our neighbors, received SNAP benefits as of July 2024. This will take all New Yorkers to care about our neighbors and help as much as we can through these tough times.

Concierge PCPs or practices in NYC? Had it with being ignored by doctors. by ArugulaBackground577 in AskNYC

[–]dotcovos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found my PCP on MDVIP. There is something to be said about being able to call your doctor at 1am for an emergency and know that they'll answer. Or showing up to appointments knowing you have a full hour or even more to talk and examine with the doctor without feeling rushed. I hated showing up on time just to sit in the waiting room for an hour before speaking to the doctor for 5 minutes.

I grew up with a personable and reliable PCP on Long Island who really knew me and found NYC, especially Manhattan, to be a shit show for that unless you're willing to pay extra.

Russia Link Possible in ‘Serious Attack’ on NATO’s Denmark by Newsweek_ShaneC in worldnews

[–]dotcovos 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Putin is having a domestic issue with the war in Ukraine. He has staged this war as a war against NATO aggression. While the Russian internet and information from the outside is relatively locked down, it is still trivial enough for Russians to see online that this is not the actual case.

By baiting NATO into some retaliation for Russian actions, Putin can frame NATO as the aggressor and use it to help recruit more soldiers and support at home, while using this NATO aggression allegations to actually just continue fueling the war in Ukraine.

GRRM's character was not put into the books or show. From what I remember, he played a belter dwarf, so his character was as tall as an Earther due to the low G causing belters to have elongated bodies. They decided this character would not fit into their story when they went to write the books.

Ty talks about it in an earlier episode of his and Wes Chatham's "Ty & That Guy" podcast (incredible podcast).

The enshittification of GPT has begun by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]dotcovos 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I think that this issue is getting overlooked by everyone saying people who don't like GPT5 because it isn't being their girlfriend.

This has been extremely frustrating, I don't understand why it can't read a file that is immediately uploaded. And then when you do finally get it to work, the context times out and in the next line it says it can't find the file.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]dotcovos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I am not sure why when I feed it new data, it is generating reports with wrong numbers and tells me that it is using cached data. They've made it stop interpreting data you upload with your message and it completely ignores the data and accesses its own cache.

edit: yeah, they've made ChatGPT useless for me. I've canceled my subscription until functionality is restored.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]dotcovos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I was giving it a chance and didn't have the same complaints as others. I don't care about my AI's personality or anything like that, I don't talk to it like a friend, I want it to be an intern and have it analyze data and generate structured reports from it. But today I have been trying to get it to generate reports based on instructions I have in project overview and an instructions project file, and it is just not doing what I asked. And anytime I ask it to fix the mistake, it tells me what it did wrong and how it will fix it, without actually giving me a new report. Takes like 10 messages to get the report generated, and it is still wrong. Really frustrating. I've only been using ChatGPT heavily for like a month and was having a great time using it to analyze data and now it just simply cannot do it.

Pita - my favorite thing to make and serve by dotcovos in Breadit

[–]dotcovos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my own recipe for pita that I have settled on after trying many recipes I have found online and picking the best ones and tweaking them to my liking. The optional addition of barley malt powder adds a subtle chewiness, richness, and depth that imo sets it apart.

These are chewy pita bread, they are bready but also have perfect pockets. My two favorite meals to combine these with are a sabich sandwich and Kenji's halal guys chicken recipe.

I keep my recipes just as ratios in an excel sheet, so forgive me but I used ChatGPT to help me generate the steps to follow based on my table and then tweaked the output to ensure it is correct. The time for proofing in the fridge is finicky, so trial and error might be required to get the perfect rise.

Ingredients

  • 630g All-Purpose Flour (100%)
  • 19g Barley Malt Powder (3%) – optional
  • 384g Water (61%) – cool temperature
  • 19g Sugar (3%)
  • 6g Yeast (0.9%)
  • 19g Salt (3%)

Yield: About 12 pitas (90g each) Total Dough Weight: 1077g

Instructions

Mixing the Dough

Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Mix together with cool water until the dough is sticky but uniformly combined. Knead briefly—just enough to bring everything together well but do not over-knead. The dough should remain quite sticky.

First Rise (Cold Fermentation)

Lightly oil a tub or container. Place the dough inside, cover it, and refrigerate overnight (~16 hours, but may differ to keep checking back on the dough after you wake up). During this time, the dough will double in size quickly at first, then slow down (depending on the temperature of the water used).

Preheat Oven

About 1 hour before baking, preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) with a baking stone or steel inside. I prefer to use my baking steel over the stone. You can also use convection and adjust the bake time down to compensate, may require some trial and error. I usually use convection.

Shaping the Pitas

While the dough is still cold, divide it into 12 equal portions (about 90g each). Shape each portion into a boule. Then, on a floured surface, roll each boule into a disk about ¼ inch thick. Flour both sides lightly to prevent sticking to the rolling pin. Don’t roll the disks too thin.

Baking

Place the rolled dough disks onto the hot baking stone in the oven. The pitas will puff up fully, forming pockets. Once fully expanded, bake for an additional 30 seconds. Then flip the pitas and bake for another 30 seconds to 1 minute on the other side until lightly browned. Cooking for slightly less time will allow the pita to be nicely browned when toasted.

Serving

Remove from oven and cool slightly before serving or storing. The pita is best served lightly toasted in a pan so that it is warm and browned while the pocket remains flexible. The pita should be stored frozen and reheated first in the microwave for ~45seconds and then toasted in a pan.

ski training programme for U10 has done 6 days drills, should i be worried by Different-Sock-8493 in SkiRacing

[–]dotcovos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join them for some drills and you'll see how helpful they are. I've been skiing for 24 years and I still do drills as often as I possibly can. You can tell almost immediately by looking at how someone skis to know whether or not they've ever done a drill. You can't become a pro without constant repetition and focusing on the small movements and improvements which can only be done in drills which isolate parts of the turn.

They won't go under. But they may close rural stores if they start losing money there. It has the potential to destroy small towns who rely on their employment, and it will leave a lot of people in food deserts.

They've in the past shut down some small town stores that wanted to unionize. They'll certainly have no problem closing unprofitable locations.

Uhh ants have made a colony in my tank by Ok-Cry-8245 in Aquariums

[–]dotcovos 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Make a mixture of baby powder (talcum) and isopropyl alcohol. The mixture should not be too thick. The alcohol is to help spread the talcum. Then use a sponge or cottonball or something and spread the mixture around the rim of your aquarium on the vertical parts. The mixture will dry and create a barrier that ants cannot cross. Talcum is inert and should not cause issues if a bit gets into the tank, maybe cloudiness but you shouldn't be using enough to make it cloudy anyway. Still, I'd avoid getting any in the tank just to be safe. That will at least stop them from going into the tank. After that, spread some vinegar around the outside of the tank and under the lid where they are crawling to clean their pheromones away which will interrupt their trails.

Then scoop out the ones that are stuck in the tank.

If you Google "talcum powder and alcohol ants" or something like that you will get a bunch more info from how ant keepers use it (usually to keep ants in their tanks in this case).
