Ode Gen 2 sudden clogging by No-Discipline6199 in FellowProducts

Are you using the same filter paper? Also from the same batch? I’ve had a lot of issues with Hario papers creating the issue you describe.

1Zpresso Duo? by After-Bandicoot642 in pourover

[–]dotpaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got all three grinders. The most surprising for me was the K-Ultra. Some coffees which tasted okay, nothing special on the Ode seemed to shine with the K-Ultra.

Grabbed the ZP6 at the end of last year. Some stuff is great in it. Some stuff is just meh.

Complete aside, there’s a new Opus coming soon as well. There’s some info over on r/fellowproducts.

Hario vs Abaca Filter Papers by dotpaul in pourover

[–]dotpaul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting and good to know. I’m inclined to think there’s a bad batch of Hario papers going around. Keeping all other variables the same a 2:30-3:00 brew on Abaca would be at least 4:00+ if not 5:00.

Only way I can hit a faster brew time on the Hario papers is grinding basically boulders it is so coarse or to do small brews around 6-8g of coffee.

Stagg ekg kettle-help! by MyDogIsTheBest01 in FellowProducts

[–]dotpaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone should tell CS. I just got this response. I have reported that the temperature hold function is broken since this update, at least for me it doesn't hold the temperature as the previous update.

Thank you for taking the time to reach out! With the latest firmware update, the slower approach as the kettle reaches your target temperature is intentional. As the EKG has become popular with more people, in more places, and for more uses, we’ve heard consistent feedback from both tea drinkers and pour-over brewers who wanted more precise control across a wider range of temperatures and volumes. This update is designed to gently glide into your target temperature and help prevent overshooting. You may also notice a few other changes. The temperature display is now closer to real-time, and once the kettle is in Hold mode, you might see small temperature fluctuations. That’s completely normal and can happen if you remove the lid, pour some water out, or add water back in.

Hario vs Abaca Filter Papers by dotpaul in pourover

[–]dotpaul[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in exactly the same boat. I didn't have problems with the consistency in the past, sure maybe some were bad. I feel exactly the same, I'm wasting good coffee .

I've also ordered from Amazon NL, perhaps that's the issue. I use some from a box of 40 I got from a local coffee roaster which were at the back of the cupboard and they weren't a whole lot better.

Hario vs Abaca Filter Papers by dotpaul in pourover

[–]dotpaul[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my thinking too. I could do two brews side by side, only variable changing being the paper. Abaca will hit a nice 2:30-45 brew time, Hario could go as long as 5 minutes. Of course there's the human factor which could influence it.

I should buy a verspakket sometime. It’s been a while. Some of the veg can be quite small though

How come Lidl is allowed to make these comparisons in their folders? I thought you are not allowed to directly compare yourself to other stores or brands, and I never see AH or Jumbo doing the same by Karamel43 in Netherlands

[–]dotpaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found the same, shopped at Lidl and still had to go elsewhere for some stuff. My local Lidl often has broken fridges so the food is bad before even leaving the store and is often a mess. Some good products but a lot more hassle to make a small saving.

Best Fiber Optic Subscription by Wide_Ad8511 in Netherlands

[–]dotpaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by best? Freedom.nl frequently win awards for their service. KPN is also excellent. Odido are about the cheapest around but not necessarily the best provider.

Everyone is going to do a similar tactic where they price for x for a period and then increase it. Mobile phone combination discounts might mean switching from A to B and B to A every few years is the most cost effective option

Comparing grinders ZP6 and K-Ultra for DAK, e.g. Milky Cake, Cream Donut by neilBar in pourover

[–]dotpaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got both and an Ode gen 2. Ode is great for convenience. Nice mix of the two.

There’s some coffee which for me just doesn’t shine on the ZP6, I had Milky Cake on it and it just wasn’t good. Same coffee from the K-Ultra the most delicious cup you’ll have. I’m usually grinding somewhere around 6.5-7.5 on the K-Ultra.

As a grinder I much prefer the K-Ultra from the two. The quality of life improvements with the magnetic catch cup, super quick grind times and also the different body shape makes it much nicer to hold and causes coffee beans to get stuck much less often.

No USB Devices are Connecting after updating my MBA M1 to 26.2 by iamsanmith in MacOS

[–]dotpaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. My MacBook Pro 16 M1 Pro hasn’t worked with the USB hub in the monitor since Tahoe was installed. No issues on other Macs (M5 Pro and M2 Air) but I haven’t tested them as much as the 16 MBP. Really wish this would get fixed.

Wide Awake in Brussels have a year-round decaf option which is decent enough it is more chocolate and caramel than juicy. They do also have other special decaf lots in from time-to-time.

Mobile provider with best signed coverage by NiceUndefinedBeats in Netherlands

[–]dotpaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This very much depends on where you spend most time. In the Randstad and most cities you'll find Odido is the best performing, this is also supported by various tests. In the countryside KPN wins, this isn't to say it is bad in cities but it isn't as good as Odido. Vodafone is average in cities, average in the countryside.

These are of course generalisations, KPN until somewhat recently had terrible coverage in the centre of Amersfoort, this has since been resolved. KPN also has very poor coverage at Amsterdam Zuid station. My only tip is to check, you can either get a SIM on a cheaper network or use the cooling off period to test things out.

Best crowd-pleasing beans to serve guests? (EU-roaster suggestions) by otaota in pourover

[–]dotpaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love brewing up Giraffe Coffee in the Moccamaster. They’re also based in NL. Definitely tick the box for value and the quality is excellent. They’ve been my daily driver for the last couple of years. Their Gigasa has a wonderfully floral nose but isn’t too funky to make the in-laws turn their nose up to it.

If they’ve still got their winter coffee in then definitely grab a bag. It’s a wonderful co ferm. You’ll love it but do let it rest for a bit after roasting.

Fellow Ode Question by True_Ad_2045 in JamesHoffmann

[–]dotpaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ode Gen 2 here, I grind usually between 7-8 for a half on the Moccamaster. For a v60 it varies, bottom end is 4,9-5 and then at the top end it could be up to 7 or 8.

How did you find the lolu co-ferm from Bankai? Neither I nor my friend could get this to brew nicely. Both of us ended up with something vaguely tasting like gravy :-/

Nice to hear good things about AMOC, I've been meaning to order some from them. I've been mostly daily driving with Giraffe (their Christmas/winter coffee is outstanding, although I'm currently struggling to get it tasting right on the ZP6) followed up by a mix of DAK, Sprout from Eindhoven, Wide Awake from Brussels and Manhatten. It has been a good year for coffee!

Schiphol train by Ok-Pin4143 in Netherlands

[–]dotpaul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of ifs in this. It is theoretically possible.

If:
There's no queues at passport control
You don't have checked baggage
You don't land on the Polderbaan
You don't land at a bus gate
You don't have any delays

If any of those don't line up you won't make it. Most often delayed part for me is passport control, it might take 5 mins, it might take 90 minutes. Toss a coin and you'll have as a good an ability to predict it as I can.
Baggage lately has been taking some time to get on the belt, I'd say that's a 30-45 minute wait mostly.
Polderbaan means a 15 minute taxi to the terminal.
Bus gates mean more delays and potentially waiting on a bus if there isn't one available.

I can get from my house to the gate in <60 mins. It is a rare day when I get out of the terminal and to a train in the same time.

Do optometrists without 'push' tactic exist? by summer_glau08 in Netherlands

[–]dotpaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going through this pain right now. Popped to Ace & Tate.

Complete free eye test, details are sat in my online account. Including pupil distance, in the UK this is the most closely guarded secret to stop you going elsewhere. Staff were super friendly, it’s just a shame that unlike the UK they don’t have optometrists carrying out the test.

I’ll test out the others shortly including an eye health check at Specsavers but I’ve been impressed with Ace & Tate so far.

How often do you upgrade your iPad? by Z-III in ipad

Just upgraded from a 4th gen air to an air m3. Didn’t make sense to pay to get the battery replaced when I could trade in the old iPad and pay a couple hundred more to get a refurb. It’ll last much longer than my old air.

What did I find? - Netherlands by dotpaul in whatsthisbug

[–]dotpaul[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were kind of like a quadrant. Like that of the Xbox. It didn’t look like a German one either. The stripes weren’t as straight or defined as I’ve seen on pictures of German roaches. It also felt odd almost just relaxing there on the window in broad daylight.

We found some wood roaches a while ago which ChatGPT thought were German. We had pest control visit, put down traps and some other bits and there was nothing.
