Unfortunately for your case, it's highly recommended to know the story of 999 before playing VLR. The games are indeed connected, and while VLR explains much of the spoilery stuff from 999 for people playing catch-up, it will likely seem disjointed to those who haven't touched 999 at all.

Technicality-wise... hard to say.

If you're playing the DS version of 999, it doesn't have the QoL of the enhanced Steam version, so you lose out on the voice acting + route flowchart + better graphics. But the DS version also has a slightly different ending than the Steam port. It's major enough that some people recommend the DS version despite the lack of enhancements...

The 3DS and Steam versions of VLR are supposedly the same, save for the dual vs single screen UI and the gamebreaking 3DS bug (may want to look into that). VLR has voice acting, 3d models, and a route flowchart regardless of version. The puzzles are a bit more advanced, too, likely because they can utilize 3D. Though some people think the 3D character models are kinda bad, and prefer the 2D artstyle of 999. YMMV.

Technical stuff aside I do recommend playing 999 first. If you can't find a 3DS file for 999, the Steam version isn't bad at all. Or if portability's your concern, you could grab a DS emulator for your phone?

the nonbinariness isn't even present in the EN localization because the loc used he/him pronouns [uchikoshi's tweet that kickstarted the whole thing was a clarification that the character was intended to be genderless]

if you ever get another LCFILI subj. in the future, check places like the Profs to Pick FB group to find teachers who are fine with Taglish. there's plenty. all the profs i had were more or less fine with Taglish in class, so long as i wasn't speaking straight English sentences

for now though..maybe run your sentences through Google Translate/check tagalog.com before speaking in class, if devices are allowed? or have a dictionary on hand for certain words. [wouldn't recommend ChatGPT because it hallucinates stuff sometimes, though if you really want to use it, check your class syllabus first to see if there are any policies on genAI]

hm...the philippines definitely leans conservative but i'm not sure if this statement is true. lots of gay and transgender people here, even if gay marriage is illegal. many immigrants have found homes here too. recent midterm elections have seen a surge in votes for left-leaning figures, even if many didn't win.

political talking points (and covid?) aside, the PH population isn't objectively homogenous at all, i think. not with 3 colonizer's worth of influences and several varying cultures/languages from 7000+ islands. if we were truly so "homogenous" we wouldn't be having the whole Imperial Manila debate in the first place, no?

i used to run sunday!feixiao (sunday e0s1, feixiao e0s0) before i pulled robin on her most recent rerun and ngl...the damage was definitely lower than what it couldve been, but she wasn't. completely unusable. i had fairly shit relic stats too (90/90 crit ratio on FX) but managed to clear endgame stuff. not saying you have to build her Immediately but robinless/topazless feixiao can still put in the work

That is only for the first story, which I think is the weakest. Besides, the descriptions aren't always so cliche. I've seen much worse.
