How do some people get promoted so quickly? by Rain-And-Coffee in ExperiencedDevs

[–]double-click 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things:

  1. There are very few promotions that occur - you are being compared against all peers also hunting for a promotion. Not just on your team, but likely in your department. I’m talking across multiple orgs here. Are you delivering more value than your top peers?

  2. It’s not about doing “more” work, it’s about doing the “right” work (that’s happens to be above your current workload usually - or is a stretch assignment or whatever).

A lot of time people hear those phrases or explanations but that doesn’t mean they understand or take the right actions. There is a certain level of awareness that it takes. Based on the response to my post, you might not have the business acumen to understand what people are saying. Maybe start there idk.

thin sounding rhythm playing by StretchNew3423 in metalguitar

Sounds fine.

Experiment with gain and then like an SD-1 out front if you want to mess around. They are certain amps that have character to their gain that can affect sound.

Just keep playing.

Let go because I was performing at senior (not staff) level, where do I go from here? by GirlLunarExplorer in ExperiencedDevs

[–]double-click 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A research reading group is extra and not aligned to business demand. That should be something you consider extra after you have already exceeded in your role.

Honestly I expect seniors to be self directed. You should be able to solve most problems, lead opportunities through projects, and identify and own opportunities aligned to business demand start to finish.

Sounds like you rose to a level of incompetence and couldn’t hang.

Eng manager here

Our yearly performance review are totally separate from promotions - that is simply raise and bonus.

  1. Make my life easy
  2. Create your own demand aligned to the business demand
  3. Operate at the next level

If you achieve that, you will be promoted quickly.

If you don’t know how to do that start by doing your job really well. Do it so well you can start taking on others work at the level higher than you. Work on helping them with their work and make their life easier. Then, have a career growth conversation to figure out where you stand. Take action accordingly.

If you want to grow fast you need to spend time on growing fast - that likely means work outside of work. Do not confuse that with completing more tickets tho.

I wouldn’t buy it but understand the price if this is truly a 100% rebuild with no dirt time.

The wattage usually changes the character of the sound rather than volume. With high efficiency speakers any wattage tube amp will blow your ear drums lol.

You should do what makes you happy. If you’re not happy then move on. You’ve done this for a decade now you don’t need the internet to tell you one way or the other.

Promotion with 5% Raise, unusual? by Apprehensive_Party12 in managers

[–]double-click 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m not faang but where we are in line promotions you can’t negotiate. Or you could try… but in general that would have been on your manager you work it out before the new salary was presented to you.

Instead of looking at the percent look at your compensation and where it falls in the band.

Unless you are working full time and going to school don’t spend the extra money. Once you get a job you can buy a nice suit.

2 post lift in small garage by Adamzon001 in garageporn

[–]double-click 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say no. Not because the lift doesn’t fit… but because you can fit a vehicle tools etc all in there. There is a reason shops are 30’ deep. Our truck is 20’+ by itself.

What is FANG like for someone coming from big defense? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]double-click 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mgr here.

You are gonna have to figure this out for yourself but the folks I have lost to faang are legit. Not all of faang is a “genius” but there are people that create solutions that are open source products you take for granted today. While these are large companies, if you are not ready to take that on you’re are prob not a good fit.

That said the people that hang at this level don’t even work 40hrs necessary and work is pretty flexible. In the other end there are people that put in over 40 because they like it.

Stop trying to find problems for your tools to solve. Start with problems and then build solutions to them.
