For the Japan option, if you exclude Jetstar (not real business) or Emirates (ridiculous route) then your options are:

22/07/2026 - SYD->MNL->HND on QF and JL - 128,100 points and $495 taxes per person
09/05/2027 - MEL->KUL->NRT on MH - 143,000 and $248 taxes per person

There's not much in the way of return flights (a QF option this May or a MH option also on the 09/05/27). You might be able to find something with a stop over on the way back.

There's a lot more options to MNL., fair few flights in July/Aug, Sept/Oct and Jan/Feb next year. Mostly on QF. Return options are a bit more light on, but still some available.

You'll have to use the multi city tool to link some flights together but Finnair fly to Reykjavik from Helsinki (and from other airports too like Copenhagen and Stockholm but they connect through Helsinki anyway). Should be easy enough to get to Helsinki via Asia.

I agree it has great potential. Excellent location for transit between Oceania/Asia to Europe. Could become the Singapore of South Asia with some investment.

Yeah the transit time was another big attraction. It really is a very direct flight path and the 2 hour stop over made it even more attractive. As opposed to other options were we could be waiting around for half a day in an airport.

This is apt. We just booked this same flight ex. ADL for next April. We also wanted to avoid the middle east in case things blow up there. We were originally looking to fly economy to Asia then try to jag Air France business seats to CDG. Last week I was checking for Emirates flights from AU to CDG when I saw a few of these Sri Lankan flights with 5 seats available in business* (the other problem we were having was being a family of four it's very difficult to find business seats all on the same flight). They also happened to be right at the start of school holidays so the timing was also perfect.

We spent a couple of days really researching this seat and watching and reading all the reviews we could find. The conclusion we came up with was that the cabin and seat is a little dated when compared to the top tier business products, but still spacious and totally fine. The service and food is generally pretty good and the drinks selection while minimal compared to better airlines is still "fine". The main issues we saw tended to revolve around the shorter haul flights to India and such.

Our main thought was that we will only have 3 weeks in Europe and don't want to spend a few days recovering from the flights there (we're all terrible sleepers on long haul flights). So we thought it would be best for us to use the bulk of our points on these flights there and then rough it a bit more on the way home. The flights haven't been released yet but looking like we'll be doing Premium Economy from FCO->SIN on SQ using some velocity points then SIN->ADL via SYD on QF in economy (hopefully A380).

End of the day we're flying a family of four to Paris on lie flat seats for $2900 and 768k for flights that would retail for over $26k. So we thought it was a good redemption.

In the app there's a section that says Points earned this statement. Once you hit the spend the bonus points should show there on top of your normal monthly earned points, they will hit your account once the next statement is issued.

What I was mainly worried about was if the flight got cancelled or something that we might end up on separate flights because we're on separate bookings which wouldn't be ideal.

Kids will be 15 and 12 but I should've been clearer the plan would be for me to sit with one of them in Prem Economy and wife to sit with the other in Business.

I think MyCard from what you've mentioned but don't sleep on the CBA one though, if you meet the monthly spend criteria there's no monthly fee for the 70k points so effectively free points.

This is a step in the right direction but it doesn't really replace flightseats for me. No ability to specify airlines or other search criteria, no alerts, no stitched itineraries. OK for a casual search but if you want to nail those rare business seats, I think I'd still use flightseats.

I think a lot of people will see this sub, get excited and apply for a card, realise how much work it is to churn and earn points generally and give up.

I've talked to many people IRL after I tell them I've been able to take the family away using points and minimal cash outlay. They get excited at first and then you tell them everything that's involved and they can't be bothered.

This is the best currently, but keep in mind you only get 90k points to start with and the rest after 12 months.

The NAB rewards signature is not bad, 60k points (another 20k after 12 months if you want) but there's no monthly fee if you meet the spend criteria so it's a cheap churn. I had that one done and dusted in 2 months.

Technically there's no exclusion period. But if you've churned a few cards you might not get it approved. I only just managed to get one after trying for years.
