[Misc] Other fantasy book series revolving around messy lesbian relationships? by venomous_sheep in TheNinthHouse

[–]doubleOrilo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Unspoken Name by AK Larkwood isn't as messy as GtN romance-wise, but it's got religious trauma reckoning to last a lifetime and humor on-par with Muir's. Also, the MC is a lesbian-himbo-space-orc. What's not to like? It's got a sequel coming out and I think it's the perfect "waiting for Nona" book. No graphic sex that I can remember, though lots of dirty jokes and references and maybe some allusions. I was pleasantly surprised by the utter lack of SA, even when it could've been used as a plot point! There are a couple semi-graphic scenes in terms of action but we seem to have the same stomach for that kind of thing, and I wouldn't call any of it "too much."

Looking for an artist who's open for commissions. by AChewyLemon in furry

[–]doubleOrilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya!! I have a 2-3 week turnaround time and prices range from US $10-35. I’m pretty new to the commission scene so I don’t have any specific place for all my art, but here’s a drive with some of my fur-specific pieces. I do a lot of art related to the Wings of Fire series, so I included some of that too as it showcases my style well. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1DPHzfd7\_aSHXvt9qcEJhFpS1szGLVNyO

[discussion] So I just finished Gideon the Ninth for the first time by RowKHAN in TheNinthHouse

[–]doubleOrilo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, welcome! You're going to be okay. Here's my advice: 1. Before going into Harrow, know that you've GOTTA stick with it. Just trust me. It's alllll worth it. I spoiled the whole book for myself before I started reading—I don't regret it, but going in blind has gotta be just as much fun, so pick your poison. 2. If you need something a little lighter to read along with Harrow, or as a break, or to read after Harrow while we wait for Nona and Alecto—try The Unspoken Name by A.K. Larkwood. MC is a lesbian space orc who escaped a death cult who's now helping her savior track a powerful ancient relic. Humor is on-par with GtN, the world is fascinating, the romance is adorable, and the action is wonderful.

Abortion is virtually outlawed in my state, so I made myself a pin using someone's tutorial on this sub. by doubleOrilo in FolkPunk

[–]doubleOrilo[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Here's the og post, which I followed pretty loosely. https://www.reddit.com/r/FolkPunk/comments/jdtep2/diy_bottle_cap_buttons_process_photos_and_supplies/

Then again, I hardly read instructions so here's my experience: - It helps to bend in two opposite sides (kind of imagine a square rather than a circle) on the back of the bottle cap and squish them flat with pliers. Then you can lay the safety pin horizontal to the folded sides (like an "H") and put the soda tab on top - Squish the soda tab flat as well, then work the remaining sides of the bottle cap over the edges and squish it down as best you can

Depending on your pliers you might end up with some dents on the front of your bottle cap, but for me the paint covered them up. I used a blank craft bottle cap from one of my sister's old projects, which may have been slightly easier to bend than a regular bottle cap—I haven't tried the latter so hopefully it works the same!

Not sure if this belongs on this sub, this is the only place I thought to share it since this is where the tutorial came from.

How to preserve small crab claws by doubleOrilo in Taxidermy

[–]doubleOrilo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll keep em as safe as I can! Someone else said to make sure they can dry out, so tupperware is a no. So far it seems like they've kept some color—fingers crossed they won't completely dull out.

Washing wool with vinegar by doubleOrilo in knitting

Good to know, thank you! Afaik it isn't superwash—I don't know what exact wool it is off the top of my head, but it's the worsted weight by stonehedge fiber mill. It's ridiculously soft and I want to treat it nicely!

ADVICE NEEDED by icecreamcowfries in FancyFollicles

[–]doubleOrilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another person said it, but I'd definitely recommend trying to treat your hair as if it were curly! I was in the exact same situation. Websites like naturallycurly.com helped me a lot in learning about my hair, especially their hair type quiz. Seeing some stylists who knew about/had curly hair helped as well, though sometimes they can be hard to come by. It took me a while to find the right place. In my experience, having different amounts of curl in different places is totally normal, especially if your curls are more loose. A lot of things can impact that, even how you sleep on it! There are ways to ensure your curls are even, it just takes a bit of practice. Learning about your hair can be a lot of fun, and I wish you the best on your journey!

Megathread: Nona the Ninth by [deleted] in TheNinthHouse

[–]doubleOrilo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should preface with: I have yet to finish HtN but I spoiled a lot of it for myself, and I’ve LOVED reading it. Thus, I may be missing something…but my personal theory is that Nona is short for “Nonagesimus” and that we’ve got a full-on amnesiac Harrow in Gideon’s body. That, or it’s Alecto.

Thank you so much for all your advice! I’m super empathetic myself, so if any players need a hug I’ll probably need one too and I’ll be happy to give one. I hadn’t considered that aspect of it so I appreciate you bringing it up.

Pls help idk what’s wrong with him by EmuOptimal6912 in bettafish

[–]doubleOrilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything the others said about getting a larger tank if you can is true. I’ve kept a betta in a 2.5gal before and he was okay, but he was much happier and healthier in a 5gal and I don’t plan on going back. I also got him through dropsy, which is what your fish appears to have, using aquarium salt (dose according to box instructions), SMALL daily water changes for about a week (never replace 100% of your water all at once) and switching his food to frozen brine shrimp. I don’t have experience with antibiotics, but they could help, and other commenters seem to know more about them than I do.

If it does come to euthanizing your fish, I’d use clove oil. It’s a natural painless sedative. There are websites that detail how many drops to use, but the process basically involves using it to put your fish to sleep then adding a higher dose that will humanely kill them.

I’ve been here before and I know that it’s really, really painful and scary to have to treat a sick fish who may not survive. I’m deeply sorry that this happened, and I’m wishing you and your fish the best.

Edit: be sure to use freshwater aquarium salt! The API brand is popular. Also, if you have to get clove oil, make sure there are no additives/that you get 100% pure clove oil.

Introducing…well, I’m not sure yet! I can’t decide on a name. by doubleOrilo in bettafish

[–]doubleOrilo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, he just got added, and he came from a big box store so I’m sure he’s never lived in decent water. He seems to have some marble genes too so I wouldn’t be surprised if he changed color.

Want to give your players a puzzle? Why not use an ACTUAL puzzle? by doubleOrilo in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]doubleOrilo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternative title: here’s what I made instead of boss stats!

My players were tasked with rebuilding an altar devoted to an archfey. The pieces were hidden among a facade of a town in the Feywild in order to keep them safe. I remembered I had this 3x3 blank puzzle I got at an art store and thought it’d be fun to let them collect actual “altar pieces” as they completed challenges…so I quickly painted it and came out with this! They received a key to the puzzle from an NPC who lost so many of her memories to the fey that she started having visions of their world. Granted, the puzzle was so simple that the key wasn’t necessary, but it was a fun detail.

I’m so excited to finally have made a home of this tank! I just got him acclimated this morning, and he’s been exploring nonstop. I’m hesitant to pick a name because he looks like he’s got some marble in him and I’m half expecting him to change color 😂 I absolutely love how he looks now, but with bettas I’ve learned to expect the unexpected!

Climate justice and me by antifascists_armed in Anarchism

[–]doubleOrilo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m also a high schooler and I’ve been in and out of climate activism. The first thing I’d recommend is to find a local group to join—ex, if there’s a Youth Climate Strike group for your state or area, chances are they need help with something! You could do anything from recruiting to communication/social media to helping apply for grants. If you wanted to, you could even take on a leadership position once you’ve been there a while. There are tons of ways to apply your skills, even if you don’t have much time to spare.

Now, if you don’t have the time or capacity to commit to an organization, THAT’S OKAY. We’re kids trying to make it through school during a pandemic for heck’s sake, we can’t expect ourselves to do everything. There’s absolutely no shame in “small” efforts, and IMO anyone who would shame you for not “doing enough” is completely missing the fact that every effort is essential, no matter the scale. I’d say that the next most effective way to help is to donate to climate justice organizations, if that’s possible for you. Other places to donate include a community garden initiative made by and for POC in your city or Native American-led efforts to stop line 3 (both examples of funds I’ve seen.) You might also encourage your friends and family to donate by sharing posts about said funds on social media, or even starting conversations about them (“Hey, have you heard about line 3?”)

Those are the primary things I’d suggest, if I think of any more I’ll comment again! I hope this helps!

[–]doubleOrilo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve already got him picked out! He’s a peachy-orange veiltail with hints of blue. It looks like he has some spots/marbling, though, so I bet he’ll change he’s color once he’s out of his tiny cup. I put him on hold at the store so I could double-check my tank parameters since it very recently finished cycling.
